    This episode hit different then any past episode for me. I was SO CUTE to see Zach listening so intently to the coach & consistently having this genuine smile on his face! So heartwarming! The 1st half of this episode is the quietest I've seen the guys on this podcast. Definitely an episode that has to be watched vs just listened to. ❤️❤️

    It’s so surreal seeing coach on dropouts, coach Cal came to my marketing class to talk to us about sports marketing. Cal is such a nice person who took the time to talk to 300 college students at 9:30 in the morning. I have a huge respect for Cal and the team this will go all the way with Oscar and the rest! I love kentucky basketball, grew up in lexington.. there is no way we win the championship this year. our offense is messed up, oscar looks hurt to me, same with wheeler. jacob is getting lost on defense. I think we should probably play small bal to win really, with Oscar Chris C.J. Antonio and Cason, and bring wheeler, toppin, and either ware, or big fella off the bench. I think Chris Livingston is such a unique player and hasnt really gotten a role yet, have him play PF the kid can rebound he is more athletic than anyone guarding him, and they can play super fast and 4-1 to give oscar space. Wheeler would be like an insane change of pace player off the bench same with jacob. Idk, my two cents.

    As a Kentucky native whos never missed a game in my 25 years of being a fan of the Wildcats. I'm just about done. Calipari can't coach, simple as that. Every year we have the talent, one of the greatest recruitment schools of all time, every year. But he just can't execute..

    0% percent chance. Zero. I miss Pitino. Cal is good at throwing his hands up and making a show on the sideline, that’s about it. We don’t run plays, it’s embarrassing. I miss watching us in the 90’s and early 2000’s. How do you give this guy a lifetime contract? Does not care about UK, but hey we are putting people in the NBA! It’s sad.

    • @ajhieb
      @ajhieb Год назад +2

      His "offense" boils down to 30 seconds of stall ball followed by either chucking up a well defended 3 (that we have no shot at rebounding) or barreling into the lane, out of control, hoping the refs will bail us out. (and probably missing free throws)
      He was the last person in Rupp to figure out "Throw the ball inside to the reigning NPOY who outclasses the opposition in strength and skill by orders of magnitude" then In the post game presser he acted like he should be inducted into the HoF for a second time just for figuring that out. It boggles the mind.

    • @apacheking9776
      @apacheking9776 Год назад +3

      @@ajhieb Very good analysis. If Bill Self had Oscar you would see how a big should be utilized. Cal is a great recruiter but not a very good bench coach and has no success at getting kids to accept a system where everybody has a role to play. And the dribble-drive style is outdated, good teams know how to handle it.

    • @ajhieb
      @ajhieb Год назад +2

      @@apacheking9776 We've run something that could be described as the DDM offense maybe three seasons since he's been here. In that offense you at least have ball handlers constantly probing the defense. There's actually some... wait for it... _motion._ Mostly we just play stall ball and hope our athletes can make a move one on one against their athletes. (Unless they're playing zone in which case we throw up a clanger at the end of the shot clock and hope we get an offensive rebound.)
      It's painfully frustrating to be a UK fan these days. If you went to KSR every day and only read the former player NBA updates, you'd think we'd have a dozen banners since Cal got here, given the quality and quantity of talent that's come through.
      That said, I'm not one of those unrealistic diehards that expects a Championship every year, but given the resources UK has given Cal (not to mention the salary) I expect a winning season, every season, no exceptions, no excuses. I expect to make the tournament every season. And I don't think it's unrealistic (again given the resources involved) to expect to make it out of the first weekend 75% of the time. It's a single elimination tournament. I get it. Upsets happen. But they seem to be happening to UK at a far greater rate than they used to.

Gets paid way to much to miss 4 tournaments tubby got a 1/3 of what Cal made and made the tournament every yr . And do well . Sweet 16 is not good enough first round is not good enough NIT not good enough. This is Kentucky. We have standards here that's why he's getting paid what he is . What a waste . Huge UK fan. My fondness for Calipari is waning. Great at signing talent. Not so great at getting the best from that talent. He needs to stop hiring recruiters and get somebody on the bench that can draw up an inbounds play or put together a competent offense.
    The biggest indictment of Cal is that he's a 63 year old HoF coach and if you look at his coaching tree, it would best be described as "non existent." If he's good at the Xs & Os, he sure isn't sharing his secrets with anybody.

      Couldn’t disagree more. The whole concept of winning a College Basketball National Championship is basically impossible. The 68-team, single elimination tournament very rarely allows the best team to win. It is MUCH different than the professional level playoff format. “March Madness” is one of the top grossing sporting events in history, though, so it will never change. If anything, the NCAA will add more teams to the field and NEVER move to series-type matchups.

He's been putting a subpar product on the floor for several years now. He's getting outcoached by D-II coaches, and his offensive strategy would best be described as "Try to score. If that doesn't work, try harder." He doesn't call timeouts in critical situations, not because of some brilliant strategy, rather because there's no point in him and his assistants staring blankly at each other because none of them know how draw up a simply inbounds play. (Or get a shooter open, or do anything a vaguely competent basketball coach should be able to do)
      That's not to say the situation is hopeless. Hiring an assistant or two that actually understand the game of basketball beyond "My guys are higher rated than your guys, so my guys should win" and then letting them actually ply their skill would do wonders. But I doubt Calipari's ego would allow for that. But if you like our miserable tournament record as of late, keep cheering for the status quo I guess.
      Hey, remember when UK had an insurmountable lead on the all time wins list a few short years ago? We're second now.

      _"I don’t think you truly understand how hard it is to be able to be a consistent top program in college basketball"_ How hard is it to consistently have a team with a competent offense? Cal has Top 5 talent on the floor every single season. If that Top 5 talent isn't delivering Top 5 results, where do you reckon the problem is?
      _"only 15 coaches have more than 1 NCAA title"_ So what? My critique of Calipari had nothing to do with NCAA titles.
      _" cal also has the 15th highest Winning Percentage in NCAA Division I basketball"_ Not over the last 5 years. He has a pretty pedestrian Win% over the last 5 years.

      @@ajhieb two things they have missed the tournament just twice since he has been hired that was the nit year when the best player tor his acl in mid February they have him they at least make the tournament. And I ignore 20-21 season for every team. He has been to 7 elite 8s, 4 final 4s, and 2 national championships. Then my next question is who would replace him that would be what you make it seem like a massive upgrade. Remember the years before cal with they went 40-27 and didn’t make it out of the first round of the NCAA tournament where cal is at a 372-103 record
