- Join us in this exciting new video where we take a blown-down douglas fir log from our property and transform it into beautiful stair treads for our porch.
We begin by showing you the salvaged log and explaining its features, including its unique grain patterns and rich color. Then, we move on to the sawing process, where we use a bandsaw mill to carefully slice the log into precise pieces for our stair treads.
As we work, you'll get an up-close look at the amazing wood that comes out of this salvage log, with its rich, warm tones and stunning natural patterns. Our team of skilled woodworkers and craftsmen take great care to preserve as much of the natural beauty of the wood as possible.
Throughout the video, we share helpful tips and tricks for anyone interested in working with salvaged wood or looking to take on a similar project. We also discuss the benefits of using reclaimed wood, including its environmental impact and unique character.
So, if you're a fan of DIY projects, woodworking, or just appreciate the beauty of natural materials, this video is for you! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to our channel for more exciting content.

Fred plays at being grumpy, but he seems good natured and funny.
At least you got it on tape!! 😝 LMAO!!!! We need more Fred's in the world to call out the BS!!! Love the video!!
Hi Jason, "nice wood"!! Keep that video clip - you may not hear that again for a long time....haha. Fred's a hoot! The wood and the stairs look great! Stay safe! Jim
Jason, I thought you were going to put in the treads... I guess you got enough going on for now and am glad you didn't get buried in that old mine!
Jason,
That was great, using your own wood for the steps so...
What's Next?
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Very nice! That's beautiful wood!
Beautiful wood and carpentry. I’ll bet your wife is elated.
Looks beautiful! So cool to harvest it and make it into your own stairs!
“It’s not a rototiller”
Damn fred is a funny guy 😂! Awesome video!
Jason in addition if you have a good dust collector 4” min it would Al’s be much better then nothing at all. In my shop I have large Oneida with a 5 HP 240 single ph. Motor. Need to close up shop this summer and it’s for sale. 5k with the dust collection gates and pipe.
The inlet is 8” to the collector and necked down from that point to 5” and 4”
👍
Was I seeing double or was that you mine exploring with Brent, I really enjoy that site.
Fred never seems like he is happy to see you.
Take the hood off the plainer it works better.
Nice...
JAY YOU NEED TO SHARPEN YOUR SAW CHAIN LIKE @BUCKINGBILLYRAYSMITH GROUND CHAIN. CHEW THROUGH THAT WOOD LIKE A LUMBERJACK AND SCHOOL THE GRUMPY OLD SMART GUY
To cool. What a great feeling . Woods to stairs . Your not a millennial , you would of started crying with the teasing you got.
"Funky But Stuff"....eeeeeeewww
Fred is seeming a bit more personable these days. Maybe he's warming up as he gets to know you. As a fellow sufferer of grumpyoldmanitis _and_ an autist, I can relate to his position. What was telling was when you outed yourself as a millennial. I bet Fred would agree with me that when dealing with millennials you can quickly run out of fncks to give.
i know a lot of 'Freds', neighbor! we are the last of the alpha males! Now everyone is an 'employee', to be control by holding their job over their heads...Peace!
