I have never seen anyone on RUclips (from Western musical background) dive so deep, analyze and appreciate Indian classical musical the way you do guys do it, partly because its so radically different and complex. Along with you, a lot of us Indians are also appreciating the deep intricacies because we listen to this regularly but don't analyze or appreciate it the way artists do it or how you are doing it. Also, the instrument is Tanpura. What Kaushiki maam is singing are different combinations of sargam (Do re me fa so la ti do in west), in different patterns. The tanpura is played to give a reference to the scale, so that she is not out of tune. This is the reason that Indian singers hit different modalities in a same tune, without going out of the scale. Also the round sound box of the Tanpura is made of pumpkin shell, hence it is costly

It’s called ALANKAR in English it can be translated ORNAMENTATION . More accurate word is PALTA don’t know English word for that.
Alankar and palta certainly are not the same.... they're doing palta, a mathematical progression of a set of notes as you described. Alankar or ornamentation is a slight twinge in the voice... that's another thing.
In India, most states follow the same musical traditions in their own way. This father daughter duo is from Bengal. What they are doing is called Riyaz which means practice. Why it was video taped was actually to capture a moment in the day of Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty who was hugely famous as a classical exponent. The fact that the daughter got featured is only incidental.
They are Patiala gharana singers, both.

Pandit ajay Chakraborty, kaushiki's father, is a legend himself. The title of "pandit" is conferred on someone in an art form, such as music and dance, who is a well known master of the art. Kaushiki is more famous now due to her presence on social platforms, but ajay Chakraborty is far ahead of her in his skills and is respected among people whom we consider legends.
@waleskaherrera the reason that you dont see the movement in larynx is because in indian style the sound generates from the naval, hence, all the movement is mostly supported from diaphragm. Although since the voice travels through the wind pipe, minor movements are created by layrnx. Since the sound generates and is rooted there is a lot of body to it.
Kaushiki is not just playing the tanpura, she is also listening to it to stay in tune and also making sure to keep up with the taal. You can also get digital tanpura or download an app. I use the Sur Sadhana app from Shankar Mahadevan Academy. Piano uses Pythagorean tuning so it is not suitable to practice or sing raags.
I have already said this if anyone who learns the nuances and nitty-gritties of INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC OR VOCAL can understand or perform any genre any music from any part of the world. Yes, we do also have Music schools and their are universities for INDIAN CLASSICAL VOCALS as well as INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC.

Kaushiki has said in a masterclass in Shankar Mahadevan's academy, that according to her father "she can sing but she has still not become the song". This comes from the aspect of devotion in this culture. To be so devoted that you are not left, only the activity is left. She told many things in that masterclass, it is on RUclips.
I think it'll be possible to interview Kaushiki ma'am if you try. She's one of the humblest people out there.... She's done an interview to western RUclipsrs before so I think if you can connect with her somehow you'll be able to ask her all your questions.
yes this is common if you are learning classical music , it starts with basics but gradually the level increases, same as that in the video. no matter what your age is , if you are learning this u have to do it.

Please Aruna Sairam and Vikku Vinayakram for classical. The former has a rich and unusual voice. You can see her Darbar performances such as Kalinga Narthana Thillana. Vikku Vinayakram is a ghatam maestro. Percussion at its best. He is to the ghatam what Zakir Hussain is to the tabla. See his Live at Afghan Church.

most classical singers start from a very young age... depends from region to region but where i have grown up and where Kaushiki ma'am too, in bengal, most of the girls and boys too are encouraged for learning classical songs since 2 or 3 yrs along with classical dance
Usually kids who's parents think they can sing, star learning by the age of 3 or 4.... Even bollywood singers like Arijit Singh or shreya started learning by 3....

It is tanpura,it is for your pitch like a drone. It is not sitar,not sarangi. Those are string instruments like violin. It is a must for a classical singer. There are electronic versions available for lesser cost but the traditional ones are esthetically made.

The Larynx movement is due to a major factor, that is : Language. Most of the of languages in other parts of the world, have some sounds missing. But Indian languages technically have all the sounds that are possible from a human. Western languages are mostly focused on sounds that only uses throat, hence westerners cant spell/butcher most of other names. They dont have the muscle memory on from where to reproduce or how to reproduce a sound. Meanwhile the Indian languages have alphabets that can be produced from major 5 parts (and some other) :
- kantha (throat/neck)
- Taalavya (Palatal consonants)
- Murdhanya(retroflex)
- Dant(teeth)
- Oshthya (Labial consonants)

Kaushiki's father interrupted her practice and indicated the "Sruti", which is the pitch. kaushiki was off pitch a couple of places. In Indian classical music the pitch is kept constant with the help of the tanpura, which resonates 3 notes, the root, the 5th and the upper octave root. So her father wanted her to sound the root note and match the tanpura and train her ear to divide the octave into the intervals in the raag sung here. which is Bilawal by the way.
Absolutely loved it...Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty is a legend himself and it was probably recorded more to show his way of teaching but I am sure they also knew the talent Kaushiki had as well...She did an interview with Korbin and Rick from 'Our Stupid Reaction' channel that was fascinating. It's a fairly long discussion (and hence won't recommend to do it live) but even as an Indian who had a fairly good interest in classical music, it taught me quite a few things...would certainly recommend to checkout in your free time...

The reason for the limited larynx movement is because the focus in Indian singing is on controlling the diaphragm as the main muscle. This is why the sitting posture, frees up the diaphragm to be used for breath control and for pushing air out like in a bagpipe, so the focus is on the playing the pipe and not on the continuity of airflow.
This video was not recorded bcoz of kaushiki's talents, but his father's. As he is a legend and a well known teacher.

I gave a test to him for admission in his institute "shrutinandan" but didnot qualify although he asked me to take teaching classes from her wife, Chandana Chakraborty(guruma) at their home with other students!
That instrument is a tamboura, It provides the drone and scale filling the spaces between the notes.
The Tanpura/tambura typically plays the 1st and 5th , Tonic and Dominant ,to hold/support a scale. Usually tuned with lower 5th resolving to 1st. ( exact same as any basic scale). So it basically provides a constant drone to the vocalist. There are drone instruments in other parts of the world , for example, the Bagpipe.
Tunings are changed based on the raag to be practiced, but its always a 1st ( tonic ) and one more note ( usually a P 5th, sometimes a P 4th or a 7th as well )
random comment that could help: In classical music you must always sing from the "stomach" never from the throat so larynx doesn't move much

Seeing that you guys are so interested in exploring Indian classical music, I thought of sharing my two cents of understanding of this area, since Google or Wikipedia isn't always reliable.
What Kaushiki is practising is called a Palta, which translates loosely as twists or turns. Different combinations of basic 7 notes are used in different sets, like 12345/23456/34567, or 134256/245367 like this. It's a vocal gymnastic to train the larynx to actually become the musical instrument. She is from the Hindusthani classical music school or gharana, where one of the primary modes of singing a raag is a format called the Khayal. It primarily consists of 3 parts: the start is called the Aalaap(introduction) which is a slow extended singing of the raag without words just to set up the tone, Vistaar ( expansion) which is the main body of the number containing lyrics mostly of romantic or devotional nature, and Taankari(the intricate finish) with rapid singing of the notes of the raag in intricate and improvised combinations. The video of Kaushiki singing at the Darbar Festival which you reacted to earlier demonstrates this. In this training video she is being trained so that she can master the raag and sing the finishing taankari . The instrument she is using is the Taanpura, which is set to the 1st (Sa, technically called Sharaj)and the 5th note (Pa, technically called Pancham) of the octave as these are the only two true notes and does not have sharp or flat. This is also done sometimes with the harmonium to maintain the scale for the singer.
As you must have noticed, she is being trained completely orally, with nothing written down. Indian classical music is an oral and auditory tradition . Lastly, Indian classical music does not allow head voice or falsetto. The voice must always be true no matter the octave, which is why so much training and practice is required! 😊

The larynx is so rested and calm because in indian classical music we dont produce sound from the larynx, we produce it with the help of diaphragm through the vocal chords.....im a vocalist and has been a Classical music student for more than last 2 and a half decades...i know its hard but when u practice it for 3-4 hrs.non stop each day forbseveral years, it becomes a natural thing and ur muscle memory does that magically....!

Learning to sing classical for kids whose parents are not good singers is really difficult, I have seen people giving up in late teens or early twenties after training since age 5/6. The quality never comes for many.

Some time ago, you did a tribute video of Lata Mangeshkar. Lata's family was a family of musicians, of which she and Asha Bhosle were the brightest stars. After Lata's death, Asha Bhosle is the only representative of the golden generation of music in India, and especially when these two came together, it was magic.
If there is just one song you can do, I will request - "Jab Jab Tujhe Bhulaya" from the movie Jahanaara(1964). From a classical singing perspective, this is the best representation of classical music in cinema by female vocalists IMHO. I have not heard anything better as a duet. I mean it in a "cinematic classical" way.
The song features a royal court setting with a princess watching and two dancers dancing and singing(whose voices are Lata and Asha).
If you like Shreya's singing, I have no doubt you will love listening to this song. They were the best female vocalists ever in Bollywood, and the most classically well-versed.
Even Shreya Ghoshal herself would consider herself a student at their feet.
Today, we have better sound editing/engineering so the vocals sound much better, but they could create magic even without the benefit of technology. The song above is an absolute prime example of their singing prowess. Both at their best.

It's not different raags... She is practicing saragam aka different patterns of swara or musical notes.
There are seven basic sawara & basic musical notes are called saragam. Raga is melodic framework. Tala ( pronounced as ta-a-l) beat cycle or rhythm structure. Laya is tempo. etc etc...She is playing Tanpura. Manjira is a different traditional hand percussion instrument.
He is the iconic maestro Pundit Ajay Chakraborty….He himself is a legend of Indian Classical Music and Kaushiki is only 50% of her father….

What she is practicing is called Paltas. The complex note structures. What she is playing is Tanpura. Yes also called Tambura. It gives drone effect.
Tanpura is costly because it's hand crafted & it is created from dried special Pumpkin.

This is diaphragmatic singing. The resonation happens there (in Sanskrit it is called the Nabi kamalam) .
The Base sound is sa. Its the 1st note of the scale. In western music it's 'Do'
