    Hey just so you know I filmed this a few months ago before lockdown. But now I've finally had time to edit it out. Anyway, are there any other videos you'd like me to do here? Should I just do cars? Or would you like more odd stuff like that or even some more radio controlled cars?

    Re price - my Gocycle GS “paid for itself” within a year (vs public transport) so everytime I use it now it’s pure “profit”. And I use it far more than I ever did my “normal” bike because I can use it in normal clothes, don’t get sweaty, and it’s just so comfortable and fun. It is also about the same price as an electric Brompton which suggests it’s about right. There are so many great ideas in this thing in particular the pit stop wheels and clean drive that make it a pleasure to own. You do have to be mindful of the location of the motor, and it can attract attention so be careful where you leave it. If they could up the assistance level to 17 mph it would be perfect...

    • @SKBKER
      @SKBKER 4 года назад +12

      UK law is to protect motorists not cyclists . 15mph is slow as hell and actually puts you in a vulnerable position as you can accelerate out of a problem unlike a road cyclist . Keeping Ebikes slow makes them less desirable making people decide to get a car which then adds to our ever increasing congestion .Bear in mind road cyclists go well over 20mph and go downhill at 40+mph (I know because I used to do this on a road bike) on tiny tyres and rim brakes - how safe is that . So bear in mind that other countries allow bigger ebikes on the road yet UK is old and pathetic .

    • @doorrob

      Get it derestricted. I have a speed box fitted, removed the limiter. So assistance up to as fast as you can pedal.

    • @SKBKER
      @SKBKER 4 года назад +3

      @@doorrob I spoke to an officer a while back and he said as long as you stick to the speed limits and don't ride on the pavement the Police won't stop you . I saw someone on one of those electric scooters with pedals (looks like a 50cc but with pedals and cranks) . He was doing at least 30mph and the Police just turned off and said nothing . No number plates, indicators etc . They aren't as dangerous as a motorbike as they don't weigh as much . I mean I can run faster than 15mph

    • @lmaoroflcopter
      @lmaoroflcopter 4 года назад

      @@SKBKER yeah but you aren't running 15mph carrying an extra 17kg of metal on you plus whatever is in your back pack.
      If I run into someone at 15mph it's at worst scuffed knees and a swearing match. If you plow into someone doing 15mph carrying extra weight with nice hard edges that's a much bigger issue.
      I wouldn't willingly get hit by a car at 15 mph. I would however happily jump infront of a mate to take the piss if he was running.
      Equally actually getting your light motorcycle licence is a piece of piss. Just get it and get a motorbike. Pick up an electric one if you really want to.
      I don't get the whining. Honestly. Transport options are already out there that address all of your whining.
      Don't want to be limited in speed: get a road bike.
      Rather an easier life but don't want to have to get a licence, tax or insurance: get an e-bike.
      Want to go faster: get a motorbike.

    • @SKBKER
      @SKBKER 4 года назад +1

      @@lmaoroflcopter No but if a rider weighs more or if you have a fully loaded hybrid bike it can weigh a lot if not the same . I also see those dutch style kid carrying bikes which weigh a lot . how dangerous are those down a hill . Also if you have a trailer on the back which I also see fully loaded with shopping . An ebike don't weigh as much as a motorbike and is no where near as dangerous so wrong category there . Why should I pay loads to the government for something not as dangerous . If I can pick the bike up it's not in the same category as a motorbike . Srry but you're wrong . Also the pedestrian who died by a cyclist (remember that ) - should he be an example to ban all cyclists then . Again you don't understand (like a lot) about ebikes . Understand them then come back to me or I just ignore you .

    Good stuff. Nice to see a 'normal petrol-head's bike review'. There are a _lot_ of people out there that like the convenience and reliability of cycling, but don't actually like the pedalling very much, hence the popularity of e-bikes - even in the Netherlands, home of cyclists - they are about to pass 50% of sales being e there. Hopefully this review will get a few more converts, and one day we might even get a decent amount of segregated roadspace so people can get where they are going without fear of being flattened or hassled.

    Best review I've seen of a Gocycle Matt! I've owned a G3 since December 2017 and it has not missed a beat in over 1800 miles since then. I used to commute on it into central London before I retired, since when I cycle daily for exercise. I'm 65 so a bit of help up the hills is appreciated. The brakes are hydraulic so should rarely need adjustment (I've never had to)and should maintain a short travel on the lever, so I would get that looked at by a Gocycle specialist. These aren't cheap, but they are quality and go on forever. 👍

    • @jonathanantoun1367
      @jonathanantoun1367 4 года назад +1

      I agree this is a great quality expensive e-bike. I know because I have a G3 since 2019, and it is still like new after 380 miles. Most of the negative comments come from people who do not or cannot own one, so do not listen to them. I have my own somewhat lengthy review here too.

    • @RexWaldron
      @RexWaldron 4 года назад

      @@jonathanantoun1367 I previously owned a budget e bike. The battery failed after 12 months, the brakes were constantly going out of adjustment and the bottom bracket went after 700 miles. I figured that in the long run, the GoCycle would break even given the quality of the build and that has proved right. I'm still on the original battery and range is pretty much what it was back in 2017. The bike is still as new despite the mileage.

      Raising the speed limit assistance to 20 MPH would be about the only good thing to come out of leaving, that’s even if they decided to change it. 20 is much safer in stop/start city traffic than 15, as often, other vehicles will overtake you at 15 but be willing to stay behind at 20, until the next stop/start.

The transition period just means we follow their regulations and laws until the end of the year while we discuss future trade agreements. If nothing is agreed to by the end of the year. We shift from using the EU's regulations to WTO regulations. IF we do get a deal, regulations and trade will be based on that.

      Typically with hydraulic disk brakes there will be a reach adjust bolt. This will allow the rider to move the levers closer or further away from the bars depending on preference.
      My guess is that they didn't adjust them quite right from the factory.

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen 4 года назад +1

      In case matt is reading, it's typically found on the pivot between the brake lever and the piston. You can wind it in or out and that changes the position of the lever.
      But obviously, check the manual for your specific make and model of brakes before you fiddle with them.

    E-biker (and car guy) from USA here 😄.
    Great review!
    Gotta admit to loving the stateside 500W, the 20mph kick and my Seattle-area scenery.
    Viewpoint: The majority of motorcyclists in the states are just looking for some wind-in-the-hair weekend fun on back roads (not commuting).
    An e-bike would provide 90% of their needs, allow them to enjoy the passing scenery better, allow them on trails, allow them to carry bike over obstacles (logs, fences) no need for insurance or registration, ability to load into a hatchback or hitch rack and store indoors.
    I'm convinced many motorcyclists in the US are either unaware of ebikes, or else they simply (opinion😊) see their ponderous V-twin as a 2-wheeled social signalling device (much like tattoos and nose rings on a milquetoast bank teller)

    We’ve had a Gocycle GX for a year now and used it every day instead of the car for going to the train. We fold it and roll it holding the sadle like you showed us on to the train. Then riding it from the train to work (before this virus appeared). It’s also great that it’s small enough to be folded, rolled, charged, right next to tour desk. In short, we love it. I also took it out in the trunk of my car to the countryside and rode it on gravel roads and it copes with light gravel brilliantly and forest paths very well thanks to the wide tires and suspension built into the frame. We also fixed a child seat from Thule to the sadle and the kids love riding on it.
    Regular bikes are not allowed on trains in my country (Sweden) only folding ones. We also tried a electric skateboard and electric folding scooter, but they are not as comfortable or good in winter and frankly, look a bit silly.

    Excellent review, Mat. I have both electric and normal bikes. Very happy with both! Tip for you, Mat! Put your heel on the pedal and stretch your leg completely with your hip parallel to the ground. This is your seat height! You will then get much more power to the pedals from your legs.

      Which would be the only true test of its claimed range - and no big deal really. At age 68, I regularly ride my non-electric Brompton 30+ miles; only reason I haven't been going further has been the issue with finding 'pit-stops' for coffee and cake LOL.

    Hi Mat the test you did with and without the assistance would be more accurate and useful if you tested it against a similar bike without batteries motor etc.. then you are not carrying the extra weight of batteries etc when not using them.. so then you would see the true gain from the assistance over a normal none assisted bike rather than an overweight bike against the assisted bike. a good few years back I had an electric bike and yes it did go better with the assistance turned on BUT I found it wasn't much easier to climb hills on than than a good lightweight none assisted bike, I'm not saying that is the case here as electric bikes have improved a lot over the past few years but I'm saying the gain isn't as high as your test suggests.

    Also FYI the front brake is looser because if it was as tight as the rear you'd go over the handlebars! THe idea is you use the front most of the time and only engage the back when you need to stop quickly. Just like a motorbike.

      IT depends on what you call a real " brake". One of my bikes fails after 18 years of my intensive using and about 30k km . Broken rear fork. Unbalanced brake levers or mistuned gear changer is not a brake but lack of maintenance. Broken plastic element meant for me its bad engeneering.

  • @giovanniriccardovigano3990

    To be fair, usually you can always adjust the brakes on bikes. Just where the cable attach to the break handle, there should be two pieces around the cable, they're really tiny. You can twist those things to adjust brake intensity and travel

    I think the delay in shift downwards is a lack of tension on steel cable, for bikes with external gear shifting the cable is kept in tension by the the spring in the derailleur and the shifter (pressure applied by your wrists/fingers). If the spring on the derailleur is too tight, it will be difficult to shift up gears. If the derailer spring is too loose, you'll get a delay or lag in changing down a gear. If the cable is too worn the cable will stretch more and changing gears will feel sluggish or unresponsive going up and down gears.
    As for the brakes, it sounds the front pad is more worn and will need some adjustments or replacement of the pads. If there is too much gap between the pads and the rotor, you have a lot of travel on brake level before the pads grabs the rotor. I'm not sure how to adjust hydraulic brakes, I've only worked with steel cable brakes where you shorten the length of the cable for adjustment to reduce the gap between the pads and rotor. Like all vehicles, bicycle require maintenance as well.

    5:33 I really like these points, it's the same reason why I got an ebike. I've done sports all my life, I was semi professional in tennis, so believe me when I say I don't need the assistance. It's just preferred. A lot of people think that ebikes should primarily be ridden by old people who need the assistance, but I say I don't want to turn up to class/my friends house all sweaty and panting. Now exercise is a matter of what you wear. The more you pedal, the warmer you will be :) It's a win from any perspective.

    I think £3K is a lot for a bike that doesn't even come with lights as standard. Plus for that price you can get some pretty decent full size E bikes, yes they wouldn't fold but they'd be more comfortable and have larger capacity batteries. That being said seems like quite a good bike 😁

    You do great product reviews of the negatives and positives to be expected. I have had my Gocycle G3 for one year already, and I can attest to the great build quality. Despite its high price, I believe this E-bike to be a great investment. The fenders are a must and the lights will help too.
    I take weekend drives at the trail, 5 miles each way on smooth concrete surface and dirt road with small rocks, easily without any major problems so far. I cycle to work, 0.5 miles each way. In total, I have cycled 345 miles on this E-bike, and I have never had to fold it. I would not try again even if you paid me to do so since I really think its a bit of a hassle having to separate the tires and handle 37lbs. The new style seems much easier to fold. I am able to ride for 37 miles on one battery charge using the Eco mode, which is the best for an exact 50% split between electric and human power and achieving the 37 miles on one charge. This drains the battery to 30%, and it takes exactly 5 hours and 30 minutes to recharge from this level with the fast charger.
    The only minor problem I have had was a broken, 1 out of three, wheel securing lever that cracked due to over overtightening the adjustment screw. The instructions for the levers are not very good. The other minor issue was a squeaking rear wheel when riding. This was solved by readjusting the three wheel securing levers.
    Finally, I added my own 12 Volt external power source made up of 6 18650 batteries to power a Supernova M99 Mini-Pro 45 front light and a rear Supernova M99 tail-light 45. These lights are turned on with a remote control connected to the external power supply. Now, this E-bike has enhanced looks and visibility at about an extra $600.

    I think you can swap the shifter to a trigger type.
    Basically all 3 speed hub gear run the same cable pull ratio.
    Anything from shimano and sturmey archer should work. Brompton one also can do!

    What about flat tires I.e. How good are the tires? How prone to get a flat? What kind of kit do you need in case of having to repair a flat on the road? How do you actually fix a flat? What type of inner tube? Is it a normal Presta valve? Where do you carry the pump? What is the recommended tire pressure? How much strength is required to get the tire off, replace the inner tube and replace the tire.
    Is the drive chain never in need of re-oiling? Does the bike ever need tune-ups?
    If you want a work out on the flats is it easy to turn off the power assist? How is pedaling if the battery is discharged? I see it’s got 3 speeds - what if battery goes to zero while in in 3rd, is it stuck in this gear to peddle?
    Sure would appreciate your insights, thanks

    Used one in America also, and the 20mph limit is far better, and still feels safe, as the disc brakes are ample in slowing it down. It is possible to derestrict the limiter and travel at higher speeds, they can fit a device, that switches between on road ( 15.5) and off road ( up to 30mph)
