This game is remembered for the Chupa Chups sponsorship in the Amiga and CD32 version (and some versions, like Game Gear). The CD32 version of this game has a soundtrack by Neil Biggin and is known for the warning about inserting the game disc on a cd player and plays track 1. This game is known as Zool no Yume Bouken in Japan on the Super Famicom and Game Gear.
ズールの夢冒険 (zuuru no yume bouken) translates to "Zool's Dream Adventure" for anyone curious. It's not a bad concept... setting aside whatever the actual original story is, it makes a LOT more sense out of the crazy myriad of locales to say "Yeah you're running through people's dreams" or something like that when you jump from a land made of sweets to a hardware store lol
Strictly speaking, that was just a sponsorship deal the game had. Chupa Chups paid a bunch of money to have their logo in the game, and the candy world was the best fit.
I absolutely loved Zool on the Amiga as a kid. It was regarded as as one of the coolest games on the system by me and my friends. Then I played it again recently and was pretty shocked at the colour scheme.
I remember as a kid/teen in the mid 90's, when in my hometown the small video game shop had an Amiga CD 32 with Zool in the Window. I kept several minutes watching it and thought this was the best graphics I had ever seen.
I got this game now on cartridge and I love it. Best money I spent on a game since a while. The beautiful designed levels seem huge if you don't know the easiest way. The caracters are also well designed. It is a bit like another game that I love, which is "pop'n twinbee - rainbow bell adventures".
I remember renting this game on a rainy weekend, to play along with my brothers, we were looking for other games, but all of them were already rented, so we picked this one, we were so disappointed, but since we were already stuck with it, we had no choice but playing it until we beat it. This video brought fond memories though, keep up with the cool work you do Alex!
I have been in an Amiga roll and grew accustomed to the psychedelic visuals to the point that I kinda like them now, plus the amazing 80's Amiga music. Great review as always!
Always think back to the endless amount of mascot platformers in the 90s, the dozens of ads for them in gaming magazines, and how everyone knows at least one kid whose parents bought them for a Christmas gift instead of something like Sonic 2 or DKC. My heart always went out to those poor souls and when I would visit always made a major effort to act as if something like Zool was just as incredible as Super Mario World.
Hey screw you buddy! We amiga kids had a whole army of iconic mascots, the only thing Sega and Nintendo had that they didn't was a marketing budget. Zool, Dizzy, Harlequin, Titus, Chucky Egg, Rick Dangerous, the Giana Sisters, Lemmings, Turrican, the list goes on.
Zool is the type of game that makes a lot more sense on the Amiga and Atari ST than the Mega Drive and SNES. The game was designed around a single button controller and the 16-bit computers didn't have platform games of the calibre of Mario and Sonic. Zool was possibly the best mascot platformer on the Amiga, which probably says a lot.
I remember that episode of Garfield. My hometown is actually just down the road from that of Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield. In fact, I used to help him when I worked at GNC long ago. He is a super nice, down to Earth guy so Garfield is like religion where I was brought up.
this was originally a home computer (specifically Amiga) game, so its design philosophy was very different from a console-styled platformer. Most home computer (and even early DOS) platform games were known for their awkward level design. thankfully the remastered version on Steam is vastly improved and gives you an easy mode.
And I always thought he was some kind of ninja ant. I remember ads for Zool and Zen being all over the comic books I'd read as a kid. Apparently intergalactic ninjas were big in the early nineties.
I was introduced to Zool through Zool 2 on the Atari Jaguar. Sadly the loose/slippery mechanics hasn't changed much, but the soundtrack is kick ass! I actually didn't know Chupa Chups existed until playing Zool 2.
@@briantaylorcloe7725 I remember KayBees fondly! They were my go-to place whenever I would visit my nearby mall. I think KayBees was where my brother got our Jaguar, and he also got a Sega Master System II over there. Chances are, that's were he also got the Zool 2. Great memories!

Amiga was my childhood gaming machine so it's funny when you shit on amiga "style" graphics because to my nostalgic eyes the amiga games look really good. I used to play this game quite a bit on the amiga. Also worth mentioning Zool was the official mascot of the amiga computer (at launch, not sure if he was dropped later) , that's why this game is somewhat high quality.
Don't get him wrong; he wasn't calling Amiga graphics bad, but more the ethos of games that looked like Trolls; a psychedelia experience purely meant to show off all 206843683 colours the system could pull.
Oh yeah Zool, I also have this game. Love the different worlds and the music is great. Still have that manual with the comic :) Pretty sure he's a ninja ant tho But yeah, playing it as a kid, the lack of saves or passwords was very frustrating. The final boss and ending are nothing special too. But I still love this game.
For some reason magazines back in the days kept claiming that Zool was an ant ninja. It was just one of those things that were repeated to the point where people just ended up accepting it as true, despite Zool clearly not being an ant.
Also, fun fact: the shitty Nintendo Wii game "Ninjabread Man" was originally going to be an official Zool sequel, but the creators of Zool thought it looked so terrible they pulled the license from the developers
Played this game through the Redimensioned remaster and how far it lets you zoom out really helps with the visuals and seeing obstacles coming. I recommend it.
I think I must be messed up in the head because I love the look of Amiga games. Not that I've seen many since I live and grew up in the States but it has it's own style where you take one look and say "That's an Amiga game." They're unique. Now that you've mentioned Amiga, that platform feels a lot like what the SNES might have been had it been a less successful regional only European centric home computer games machine.
