Great Video - it is my homeland too, and your stunning views made me feel really homesick for the land I was brought up in. As a youngster, I would have explored every inch of the coast from Cruden Bay to the dunes at Newburgh Bar at the mouth of the River Ythan. Watching your video, it struck me that I never really knew the names of the rock formations back then, so it was interesting to hear you catalogue many of them in this and your other videos. I guess the scenes will have subtly changed with each cycle of the seasons and the effect of sea and wind over the last 60 plus years will have further moulded these cliffs, and many of the paths I walked then will now have eroded away. Yet there is an enduring and comforting permanence about it all. The people who live on that land and fish those seas will have endured, in three generations, the 1918 “Spanish flu” to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. Resilience In two great wars in nature, not to speak of two great wars of people, should remind us of the many friends and family over these generations who have helped us be the people we are: people also shaped by the landscapes of Slains. Landscapes that you have captured for posterity in your videos. As you say a great resource, on your doorstep, in lockdown.
Les Cantlay. Yes indeed Les, I keep in mind those of the past, to document the ‘here and now’ and to inform future generations.
Also to remind ourselves of the many great assets and potential of this area. Your account is beautifully written and makes the huge effort I put in compiling these community videos all worth while.
