Unfortunately the anime cut out all of Brain's back story. He was once a farmer, but he found that he had a Talent that gave him an uncanny level of skill in swordsmanship. Gazef Stronoff defeated him in a martial arts tournament, and since then Brain resolved to only pursuit of martial strength. His Field and God Flash techniques are personally created skills. Field heightens his perception and accuracy, even if he can't see his target as long as they're within a three meter radius. And the God Flash technique allows him to strike so fast that blood doesn't even have time to stick to the sword. ...But meeting Shalltear destroyed his spirit because it made him to realize the strength he had been pursuing is out of reach. He came to understand that a human cannot get anywhere near as strong as her, and that everything he ever fought for, and his life itself have been a complete waste of time. Brain even started quoting Linkin Park in his despair. Real talk.
Don't forget that these are all just regular dudes. Before the Tomb of Nazarik dropped in, the power scaling wasn't so horribly skewed.....mostly. You have some outliers, but in general, people like Gazeff, Brain, and Clementine are getting to the height of human potential. When you're born and can only get to maybe lvl 15 and have lvl 15 type money you're gonna throw in with the guy that's level 35-40. But then you suddenly get invaded by things that are easily 2x-2.5x times that level. I will admit that they should have ran when Brain was running. If big boss can't handle it, I probably can't. I'm with the rest of these bums because I threw away my shounen protagonist dreams a long time ago.
You also got to remember we do not know how much time has pass since the game ended for all we know a 1,000 years has pasted as we know form other game to world novels world lvls have regressed since the losing the heros of old. But the plot point is finding what is left. This happened in the anime gate.
FYI Clementine mentions Brian to Ainz as someone she considers on her level. Gazef, Brian and Evil Eye are among the strongest in this world. Clementine mentions them alll as on her level or stronger. The problem is that citizens of Nazarick are OP among OP level.

I find it sadly funny how no audiovisual interpretation of AinZ's name give it uniformly proper treatment. I don't think I ever heard the dubbers use it right, and in the sub they also fail to get it right. what is up with that? do they believe they are 'correcting' the Japanese? Z is different from S, idiots. don't help that using S makes you sound childish. like you cannot form hard letters.
