- Sometimes, no matter how well you prepare, your car can betray you on the track. In this video, I share the story of my unlucky day at the Formula Drift Japan J2 Round 1, where everything that could go wrong did go wrong. But even in the face of adversity, I kept going and learned some valuable lessons. Watch to learn from my mistakes and enjoy a good laugh.

You have more seat time in your JZX missile than FD S15. You should build a missile car identical to your FD car.

That was a super tough course. I couldn't imagine hitting all the zones in that much rain. The car is too fresh in my opinion to redo unless it's needed. Just keep shreddin man! Once you're comfortable, you'll be unstoppable 100%.
Don't change the engine! You most need consistency and practice, not a new mess of problems to solve

The prep time for this event was left till last minute tbh. Others taking part already practicing and testing their tunes while Sam running around to get his car just barely make it until the last minute. We support you but you gotta be real about things to yourself if you really wana make it in J2 fam.
If its feeling good... Don't change it till the season's over

Yup touch and go was on the literal wrong side of a straight
@@jordangarneau8817 t&g was fine. t2 outer-zone ends early so you can hit the apex of t2 instead of sticking to the edge of the pavement the entire corner. you approach t3 a lot farther right with smaller t2 exiting angle, thus giving you the speed to power down the straight. throw those rear wheels right into the t&g and get on gas to power through t3 into t4.
@@FadelessSpade no sense in defending it , any drivers that made the touch and go literally looked like a slightly angled drag race , it was horrible .
@@jordangarneau8817 making the t&g and hitting the correct line are two different things. in this event harry yoza(84) and kiyofumi hamada(87) hit the t&g smoothly even though they didn't have perfect lines because they came out of t2 closer to the apex. the drivers adapted to the track, as it's suppose to be. anyone who stayed in t2 too long didn't get a smooth t&g, simple. it's why t2s outer-zone ends early, to not punish those who come out early for t3 and set up the correct line.
yea it was a hard t&g and rain didn't help t2s exiting speed, but the t&g also sort of the point of that rounds layout. driver adaptability.
@Fade yea if that track was a rounded bank , it's literally a C , the t&g is on a straight. That would far better service its purpose on the other side of the track . No run looked natural or smooth with the T&g

I vote if it isnt broken dont fix it! If you are leaning towards keeping the engine in do that, focus in and work hard and just keep improving in the car as-is. Cant wait for next round, cheers Sam and fam and team!

Changing a motor in the middle of a comp is a very bad idea. Consistency is key.
Yeah I agree you shouldn’t change the engine if you feel good in it currently then don’t change. As they say “if it ain’t broke ,don’t fix it”

Good attitude through all that happened what. Sometimes you need to readjust your goals through such events to get you through them. Getting a score on the board was an achievement!

Yeah, I think the real problem was he didn't have enough time in the schedule for a proper shakedown. Any racecar will have a few gremlins after a rebuild like that, just needs time to work them all out.
I wouldn't feel bad, Sam, that track seems to just get really random in the wet, and it wasn't even consistently-wet. (Also I often wish J2 did Top 32 cause there's actually tons of drivers in it I really like. It seems like more should get to battle. Though I suppose I understand the scheduling reasons etc. )
One nice thing to come out of this as soon as you tap the warranty on the pad and get a replacement. You have a spare to use. Remember your IT background and have spares of parts that are important and two spares of anything mission critical.
That touch and go zone seemed soooo far out and kinda killing the flow of the run for everyone.
They need to put it at the apex bricks not after it dumb moves from them

i like the S15. same kit as adams FD s15? looks really nice. not usually a fan of pink (i can guess you are lol) but that colour is neat. probably looks even better in person :P shame it had issues but i hope theyre all fixed and dont return!

Gutted for you mate. I was up at 5am in the uk 🇬🇧 to watch. It might feel like all those hours are wasted but it’s not, it’s all experience but please don’t be going dwn the Lz route! Concentrate on making more vlogs about testing you fd car…. You get views, make a living but still getting seat time! It’s all about seat time!!!

Probably worth buying a pcan-usb adapter so that you can sniff your can-bus to diagnose problems. Can also use something like canopend in ubuntu to edit cob and node id's, set baud rates and even enable heartbeat messages.

Keep Pushing Hard And Get More Practice In That Car!! Close and during FD Season I would say stay in the car your driving in Comp!! But Either Way Nothing But Love For Ya And Your Passion To Be In FD!!!! Many People Can Backseat Drive From The Couch 🛋️ But When Your Behind The Wheel It’s A LOT DIFFERENT!!!

You were right about the drop offs, they de beaded one of the tires of a car during the fj2 top 16.
Honestly that one corner where you have to hold it on that straight is way too shallow for the amount of depth you have to go to get in the point area

People are forgetting the fact you don't have heaps of seat time in that car. And the weather didnt help at all.
Then people compare adam and sammit as if thats anything alike. Japan tracks are technical. American tracks are fast.
Practice makes perfect and you cant expect that to happen so soon
This title doesn’t exist. You betray your car and then is fails no matter what the reason. Do James deanes cars ever betray him? It sucks but stay true and get to the root of the problem. Failures make drifting expensive

Maybe try a different belt brand or use some belt dressing when the correct tightness is achieved.
how can you walk away from this event and say that your car is running mint driving in the rain is the extreme opposite of what you need to feel from your setup so to say the car is mint is a lie
need like an AU falcon tune for the wet.. those things drift sick when there is a bit of liquid horse power on the ground 👍

After watching this round of FDJ2 and 3 it looks like the course was laid out weird… soooo many people couldn’t link - or could only just link cleanly the entire thing in practice, qualifying or the comp… car issues notwithstanding, it looked like a tough track

That 3rd clipping point after the hole in the track on the side I don't think that it would even be very possible on a dry day it just seems too far away that almost feels like there should have been a quick double S curve there but you know for wet conditions was pretty good
The touch and go .... they layed it out like the track was a U shaped bank , but it's a straight in that area . They placed it on the literal wrong side .

Personal opinion here but I reckon you should do an event without YouTubing it, less stress, more time and you’ll be able to actually think about the course/car instead of how you’re gonna make this video work or if anything’s gonna go wrong… I mean I don’t think anyones gonna mind missing out on a video for the progress you’re gonna make off cam, but all in all killa video bro keep it up🤙🏽🇦🇺
You can't plan for everything, man. Second run looked good until the end and even the qualifiers didn't look great the next day.
