The Shocking Lack of Affordable Wildlife Primes (In Depth Discussion)

- What is up with the lack of affordable wildlife primes?! Most companies have these super expensive telephoto primes for $20,000, but what enthusiasts are buying those for squirrel footage? I much prefer primes to zooms, and there are only a few companies who are starting to make telephoto prime lenses. What's the best wildlife prime that fits anyone's budget? Nikon seems best for full frame with a 400mm f4.5, 600mm f6.3, and 800mm f6.3. Canon has some super budget 600mm f11 and 800mm f11. Sony has nothing. Leica 200mm f2.8 is amazing, but not really enough reach, and the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters disable linear manual focus making them unusable. Olympus 300mm f4 is the savior for micro four thirds. Fuji is rumoured to have a 500mm f5.6 coming, that would be sweet for aps-c!

I'll film your mom
1:00 Sadly, i see no pop. f/5.6 is too much sharpness as for me
bro is slowly getting into nikon
Bro knows photo. Lol
Slowly? He’s trying to keep his mad lust on the down low. I see a Z8 in his future.
He switches camera systems faster than diets on Vegetable Police channel :D
I'd say not slowly, but barefoot-ly (is this a word?)
He is so indecisive that he could easily become US president if not for the lumberjack handicap 🤠
Nevermind the image; the sound is the real achievement there.
I'm in a bunker with 1000 bucks in equipment and still strain to sound half as good.
Olympus 300 f/4. Mic drop.
The Canon F11 800mm lens is no joke, I have the 100-500 F7.1 L lens and bougt the 800mm for my wife so she can also make photos of birds when we go to birding areas together. But is is so good that it is a very nice addition to my 100-500 L lens.
Yes its a bit dark but I always go shooting birds when there is nice lighting, so it is not so much of a problem.
Just got home from the zoo where I volunteer as staff photographer and I had a blast with my Z 180-600 again 🙂
Are the primes sharper? Yes.
Was I able to quickly zoom in and out to switch between close ups and full body shots of our koala baby? Also yes! 😁
For now I like using zooms. The primes come later, after I become a billionaire. When I'm old and buy 20.000€ lenses to shoot very common birds in my backyard because I have nothing else left in my life.
Still waiting on availability
@@bigboi36 I got lucky. I'm German, ordered mine in April directly from Nikon and got it a couple days later.
It seems like the best option for both Sony and L mount is the Sigma 500/5.6. The weight and price are pretty excellent. Unfortunately Sony caps the frame rate and doesn't allow TC with the Sigma. It lools like the Panasonic S5II is a really good option with the Sigma.
What about some used f mount versions, slap an FTZ and a used 500mm pf?
Your channel has been hacked. Way too much love for Nikon for this to be the real deal. Or is it hate for the other brands for not coming to the birds in flight party?
MFT has way cheaper lenses in this sort
Yeah, see there’s a problem with long lens, affordable and prime is that you can pick two options and not all 3
10:04 Dude went so high!
Bro. Just get a 300 f4 and a 400 f5.6 EF lens and a metabones 0.64 or 0.71 speedbooster and film with a Olympus EM1X and this combo … even if not perfect you won’t be able explore its limitations. Get out there and discover life, man!!!
Still using my old Lumix FZ-82. It's terrible at almost everything, but i have all the lens in one camera. Doing wide angle landscape, and 3 seconds later zooming on a tiny bird. It's quite fun. (or what i tell to my poor self)
You should totally upgrade to the FZ300, it has a shorter range up to 600mm equiv. but you get Tony 2 throughout the lens
The FZ82 still has its uses due to the 60x optical zoom. Have got birds with it I couldn't have got with any other camera. Just need good light...and a tripod!
TTARTISAN 500MM F5.6 Focus Ring will loosen up over time. It's my best Panasonic S5ii option and wow it really works!
Would be cool if you got hold of one of them radioactive Hexanon AR 57mm f1.2 mm lenses from the 60's. And compaired them with zeiss.
Fuji 100-400 is not a bad option but yes the 70-300 is ideal since it’s super light but 100-400 has better image rendering and sharpness. Footage is also really nice from both for wildlife
Yea I had both, 100-400mm is better if you don't mind the weight.
I will never settle into a niche. I love photography all around. I enjoy portraits of all kinds, wildlife, sports, macro, street, travel, etc. Why only do one? P.s. Hello Kasey 👽
Some say love is like an affordable Nikkor prime.
Pan/Leica 200/2.8 with 1.4 TC - 1425 grams, T8, 560mm, $1500 used. Best stabe. Multifocal length capable.
And you lose linear manual focus.
The cinema is ours with this lens and composition
Having abandoned the terrible Fuji AF for the Nikon Z8, I was kinda unsure about Nikon, because you also hear a lot of mixed things about Nikon AF.
Now, a year later, I can say that it was the right decision. At least on the Z8, the subject detection + AF for animals(!) is truly amazing, and the lenses alone make it the best system for wildlife.
Got the 800 PF and the 180-600, both brilliant lenses, and much better than anything Canon or Sony offer for the price point.
do you have your wildlife photography uploaded anywhere. i'd love to see stuff you've shot with the 800. i have a Z8 (been shooting nikon since about 1979) and the 300PF and 500PF f-mount lenses with the FTZ adapter and i shoot mostly wildlife.
Same boat. Sold Fuji XT-3 after 5 years and didn’t upgrade to XH2s due to bad af reviews, plus the 150-600 being f5.6-8 was a huge bummer… super relieved with all the recent firmware issues. I’ve been holding out for a more affordable option and think z6iii + 180-600 is it. Paired with 24-70 f4 & 50 f1.8 I pretty much have my top 3 genres (landscape, wildlife, dog portrait / general) covered.
@@rvpcqp Good choise, the 150-600 is awful on fuji's 40 megapixels and hits diffraction at f5 and looks blurry as hell. It is easily the worst system for wildlife and anything that requires autofocus work.
You came from Fuji, your perspective is lacking in what’s better lmao
@@JojoJoget I think 99% of my images being perfectly sharp and in focus is all I need to know. 🤷🏼♂️
Grab a 1200mm f5 dobsonian and slap a crop sensor onto it - couple hundred bucks secondhand
Nikon Z8 with 28-400 has me covered. 45 magapixel sensor lets me crop 2x and still keep the 4K resolution. In 3.8K120 you get 2.3x crop. The sync stabe on this lens is the best I have seen yet.
Nikon 800mm-“It’s ONLY $6000.” Nikon 600mm- “ Any it ONLY COSTS $4,300.” I need to dock my yacht and run down to the camera store to pick up those cheap lenses! WOW what deals! Has the word ONLY been redefined?
I need to find a PO BOY camera store where the expensive lenses start at over $500. I need to find something under $1000 for my whole wildlife rig! Here is a challenge for you. Put together a PO BOY right for under $1000. Used is probably the only way to go. Hit me with it Sensei😎
Great video as always! I love your channel. Most of the stuff you review is way out of my price range but you give us a dose of somewhat reasonable gear every now and then. Keep up the good work. It’s fun to see how the other 5% live.
Did you not watch his previous video with the TTArtisan telephoto lens he mentions in this video?
@@ledheavy26 Yes I watched that one. Manual focus only. The stiffest manual focus ring he has ever used. Needs a mono pod or tripod. I guess it could work but the super stiff manual focus ring and no stabilization are pretty big drawbacks but at that price you should expect some drawbacks.
What camera, coupled with this lens, would give me good wildlife video that is affordable? Looking to keep the total under 1k. I know that would mean used which is fine by me. It appears Sony is the current video king. So a used Sony paired with this lens? Recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks
@@ledheavy26 Yes I did but his review matched the lens with a 4k? camera. It showed what it is capable of with high end gear and that doesn’t help me. I think the largest group of potential buyers would be owners of cheaper gear. If you could afford a 3-5k camera, you would probably be looking at something that you can autofocus and is stabilized.
I need to know what it is capable of with a camera that goes for $500-$1000. I’d love to see a review of that lens with a camera that would be more realistic of the market for that lens.
I can identify with your comment, as a Full Frame user of technology from a decade ago and M43 losers from a few years ago.
sushi boy 300mm f4?
I used the original 4/3 version and it was a absolutely perfect lens.
original was a 2.8 lens. would love a modern version
@@godsinbox The original was quite a beast. I wonder how it focuses on the latest body.
I was suggesting the modern f4 one.
Hmm. Would love to see you test 500mm mirror lens? Cheap, lightweight, manual focus... no stabilization thought.
I honestly like my Sigma 150-600c on my R7. I can't tell if the IS syncs with the OS, but video at 600 is hard to pull off. And it is a heavy mofo. I've pulled some nice shots with it, at least (I'm really wondering if I should send them in). But I won't rag on it being a $1100(can) lense at T6.3 at the 600 end.
Zzzzzzz.. Have a nice weekend..
You forgot, with the FTZ adapter you can look into Nikon's F mount glass. I recommend the NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6e PF ED VR and put the ZF into crop mode when shooting video. You won't miss the FX view unless you're to close to your subject. Only 1452 grams as well, around the same price as the Fuji 500mm f5.6, far cheaper used, around $1500.
If you're feeling crazy you could also look into Nikon's insane F mount telephoto primes and hunt around for a good deal on used gear... you'll probably break your arms off though.
The stabilization for video with the old F glass is bad, that's why I don't consider them as an option.
I have lumix GH6, Sony A7sii and canon apsc, I can't join nikon also bring back universal M42 Goddamnit
Probably not the best option, but Nikon also makes the 500mm f/5.6 pf. It is a little bit older, and many used copies in great condition can be found for around $2300-2500 (US). Only problem with it is that you would need the FTZ adapter, as it is an f-mount lens. Could be a fairly "cheap" alternative to the 600mm f/6.3 though.
Main reason I'm considering going to Nikon. I'd be happy if Sony just had a 600 f6.3/f8 and/or 400 5.6. So fu(/(!N$ annoying.
It's baffling Sony!
@@cameraconspiracies it's weird because i know a ton of sony wildlife shooters where i live, in costa rica, and many of them are birding guides. most of them are using the 200-600 which performs amazingly well (and it's not expensive) from what i've seen. i shoot mostly nikon with the 300 and 500 PF primes but i'm thinking about getting the sigma 500mm f/5.6 for my sony A7C ii. i know you're not fond of sigmas (i wasn't either), but the images i've seen from this lens are off the hook sharp. and it's only about $2500. all that said, i still think you need to get the Z6iii. we just need to see if it has shooting banks or custom modes, or at the very least, a customizable button near the right hand finger tips.
on edit: i see that you've addressed the sigma 500mm in other comments and the lack of native stabe will cause problems on a sony. i'd be doing mostly still shots, so i guess if i want to do video with it, i'll have to use the tripod and gimbal head and keep panning to a minimum.
OM System OM-1 MkII Firmware 1.1 - improved focus with the 300mm Pro lens and the 2X teleconverter. I think that should do it. FF equivalent - 600 mm; with teleconverter - FF 1200 mm! Both camera and lens are weather-sealed and the 300 mm also has lens stabilization to be added to the camera body stabilization. Someone else did a Mic drop!
Don't forget about the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR. Yes, it's a DSLR lens but you've probably got an FTZ adapter for the Zf. It's light (1470g) and small and still available new but there are plenty available used (MPB/KEH) for about half price now.
Kasey can you make a video in which you'll elaborate more on why you didn't find the magic in zoom lenses for wildlife and shifted towards primes more? For someone uneducated (like me) a zoom lens seems to be a more versatile option. Idea for a video? Maybe? Are you subscribing for more pfosnwofhrnepfnwo?
I love how far away you are 😂
It is funny that some old, cheap lenses are forgotten or even hidden away. I bought used good condition Canon 55-250mm IS EF-S f/4-5.6 for 80€ (117 CAD) and use it very often with my Canon R5. So, I have an 88-400mm @ 5.6, which is amazing. It has IS and macro capabilities, making it pretty great. For video, the R5's IBIS combined with the lens's IS is just an amazing combo. Bokeh and quality-wise, it is really not far from my RF 100-500mm. To be honest, sometimes the bokeh is a bit better because of the wider aperture (5.6 vs 6.7 @400mm), yeah I know it is cropped and can't get full 45mp but still hard to notice and in video 4k120, 4k60 etc even harder. I know it is not a prime lens, which some of you might prefer, but it is still pretty okay even for events, macro, or other kinds of stuff like dogs, birds, etc. Just saying, don’t always look at prices if you want something that can get the job done. It is sharp lens for sure!
Nikon’s 800 PF is a great lens, a little big for walking around, but it works hand held for stills, for video it should have some support structure, only 4014 grams as I have it configured on my Z9. The very odd time, it is too long, but then I just go into portrait mode for birds and animals. Choice is great, Sony and Canon are falling behind with affordable long glass.
I think you may want to check if Tamron lenses sync on your ZF. I had two, the 35mm and 85mm (which is a stabilized exact same optics version of your G 85mm ) and both were extraordinarily stable on the Z6.
If you put the 3.3x on first with a 0.25 diopter you'd have a murder SoNy. The needle falls down or that's not true?
You should do a vintage budget primes version of this video. I bought a 300mm f4.5 pentax takumar with 18 aperture blades for under $100. Thing is a beast, but so awesome. I have it on m4/3, can film birds or supper dramatic sunsets. Can swap in a teleconverter too. So get close to 1000mm with it.
I own the old Nikon F mount 800 mm lens which works really well with my D850, but it was very expensive (17k when I bought it) and moreover requires an expensive very solid tripod and a Wimberley gimbal head to provide good freedom of movement when shooting wildlife. Not for the faint of heart. We are so lucky now to have more affordable light weight options with mirrorless cameras. Recently I have been comparing the XF 150-600 zoom on my XT5 with the Z 180-600 plus 1.4x teleconverter (so roughly the same reach) on my Z8. They are both amazing lenses, producing really sharp beautiful images. The Fuji does not always grab focus as well as the Nikon, so there are more misses. On the other hand, the weight of the Fuji kit is much less than the Nikon kit so, handheld, I can more easily and quickly bring the lens to bear on the subject. Also, changing from stills to video is much simpler and more intuitive with the Fuji. A prime would be nice but the flexibility of the zoom is a tremendous advantage for the amateur wildlife photographer like me. I can quickly switch from a photo of a distant bird to a butterfly on a nearby wildflower. With the prime you have to back off to get focus on the butterfly and by that time it has flown away. Just as an aside, one photographer who has recently been using Nikon telephoto primes to great effect is Thomas Heaton. I recommend checking out his RUclips channel.
Perfect tele is like that kite in the background - way out there and totally out of reach.
My problem is new telephoto lenses are generally way too expensive for me as a hobbyist. I use vintage prime lenses instead, like the Konica 300 T4.5. Can slap on a 2x telecontverter if need be. I know, I'm cheap.
You tested that TTArtisans 500mm, that looks nice. Maybe I'll get that one.
WOW, what a background, that skyline is impressive!
He’s actually in Florida but because the earth is flat he was able to get Toronto in the background.

Here for the next phase where we discover how the best shots are taken when the subject is well within maximum range.
How much do I have? 97 dollars.... aaaaa.....
You are really great at this :-D
You didn't mention second hand canon EF mount primes. With people moving to RF they're coming up frequently and can still autofocus on RF cameras. The only draeback is the earlier versions don't stabe as good as the RF lenses
That's the problem, the stabe of adapted EF or Nikon F glass is not good for telephoto and they are heavy as hell. That's one area where the modern lenses are better.
I think General Electric will be the first
Sony has 300mm f2.8 1470g add 2x tele 600m f5.6. Many positive reviews. Many very positive reviews on other camera channels. But the $6k has me from playing. So I’m stuck with the 200-600mm chunky monkey.
I've had bad experience with the 2x tele on the 100-400mm GM. The stabe was very jerky.
hey, where is the Sigma 500mm f5.6 L-mount I mean. for S5II for example, and may be for the next S2R
Sigma doesn't sync stabe.
Welcome to the rabbit hole we have for years. Personally, I don't mind a heavy prime as long as it's cheap enough. But there's no such options so far. And I agree heavy primes won't sell that well for bird people, at least the ones I know.
WHY DONT YOU JUST BUY A CAMCORDER LIKE THE PANSONIC 981K WHICH HAS A FOCAL RANGE OF LIKE 28 TO 600MM FF EQUIVALENT. I BETCHA THEY ONLY HAVE LIKE 3 ELEMENTS IN THERE SINCE ITS SO SMALL AND COMPACT. YOU CAN GET IT FOR 500 USD.
No need to scream. Consider the Canon SX540 HS, which has a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-1200mm. You have all the focal reach you could ever want. Sharp? Cough. Good light gathering? Cough. This video is about primes because they are sharper than zooms. Your camcorder and the suggested Canon bridge camera give good variable reach, but there is a reason you don't see pros using them on African safaris. They aren't very good for things like that.
@@danncorbit3623 most people aren't In Africa getting footage of the Samba, puma and Timon. He is just at a random park taking pictures of squirrels as a hobby. camcorders are far superior for the average user than most expensive cameras.

- want want a good reach (28-600) ? Camcorder got that.
- want 4k? camcorder go that.
- want great battery life? camcorders got that,
- want good onboard audio? camcorders got that.
-want better audio? camcorder got mic inputs and headphones ports.
- want better economics ? camcorders are unmatched
- want to take your camera one a hot day without worrying about over heating ? camcorders do that.
though they do come with some "cons" but thats due to the old sensors in it and the size of the sensors. low light performance is always Meh but you could argue that they are good enough for most people.
the only reason camcorders stopped being the goto was because companies realized that they were to good for the money. they are a one purchase item. think about it, why would sony sell you a camcorder when they can sell you a body, lenses, filters, batteries, monitors, etc forever?
Canon EF 300 2.8 is 1st ver with 1.4 TC $2000
I would like a 1000mm prime with a T8 toneherture for the pony of hope for around $2,000
You can get 1000mm mirror lenses (the ones that look like a telescope) for way less than $2000. But they have an atrocious doughnut bokeh
Ah, but you didn't mention AF... 😬

If manual focus would suffice the 500mm ttarisan with an adaptor to pony boy g9ii not the speed booster, would double the focul length I think. Unless im mistaken it would be a 1000mm f6.3 adapted to a m4/3 body
Standing barefoot next to a lake, for no apparent reason, talking about lenses. This is why I keep coming back! LOL
By the way, your obsession with testing lenses and evaluating color science is without peer.

If you’re going to manually focus anyway then try speed boosting the ttartisan 500 on a g9ii. Could that be something?
I just used Google maps to try and work out where you filmed this (I'm in the UK).... Was it at Tommy Thompson Park? I quite like the look of the sigma 500mm prime lens (I've got a Sony 200-600 but it's super heavy.....on a Sony 6700 the sigma is 750mm equivalent which is a good balance)

I'm happy with my Panasonic S 70-300mm but it's not a prime and it's as expensive as one 😆 on my Lumix S5IIX I may get the Sigma 60-600mm but again it's not a prime. Of course if all I did was wildlife photos I may have chosen a different camera 😆
Ranting aside, that was an awesome landscape setting. That view was a genuine pleasure to sit back, watch and relax to.
It ain't that sexy here in Blackpool.
I loved my Panasonic 100-400mm lens. But that was till my illusions were shattered when I bought the 200mm Prime. Now I have to hold my nose when I attach my beloved 100-400mm lens to my Panasonic cameras knowing that my 200mm prime lens would be superior.
An interesting comparison. Like.
It`s more Ergonomics... 🙂
Hippos and shi*s, you savage
I want Sony to release tele primes that cost less than 10000 US$.
It don't care if is more expensive than the new Sigma 500 f5.6.
bro it’s 2024
Old Nikon F glass. Problem solved.
Not for wildlife, it's way less stable.
what mic??

Sure glad you finally turned around and saw the kite, because I had been staring at it for a long time, wondering, "What the heck is that?" We need distractions like that. The Cinema is ours.
Telephoto prime market is a niche and telephoto lenses are expensive to manufacture. That's why this situation.
It's refreshing to find a reviewer who doesn't like anything.
You should try getting Pentax prime telephoto lens as well as vintage ones, they are one of the cheapest options and they have quality glass!
What would you recommend, Sony 100-400 or 200-600?
What about Canon EF 600 f/4.0, with adapter, there could be magic. Can be found for relatively cheap. But it’s chunky boy.
The only problem is Canon slow mo capabilities.
After all the options you present here's what I think you're saying:
1. 600mm min required focal length
2. Decent toneh for subject background separation
3. Reasonable price & weight
4. Must be a Prime
Well, as far as I can see your best best for Wildlife is still the loser MFT G9ii with Pan Leica Zoom. Use DxO for RAW denoise issues.
You save a fortune, have modest weight setup, more than acceptable image quality and autofocus, great reach.
Only downside, zoom not prime.
Lastly the Nikon is GREAT, but absolutely not economical for the average enthusiast.
Great analysis though, as usual, thanks.
Signed: A MFT Loser about to get the Pana Leica $1900 CDN zoom, brand new, for all the reasons your video presented.
I have the 100-400 but sadly only the G9. Lumix is sending me a G9ii to try out though which I am hyped for!
If you are looking for a slightly more economical solution with Nikon, you could pick up a used 500mm f5.6 PF. It‘s almost as good as the 600 PF, only downside is that you would need to use the FTZ adapter
I honestly don't know how anyone could conclude that a 100-400mm zoom for M4/3 is what I should be looking for after watching this video.
Hi Kasey.
That Sigma 500 needs to come to Z but if the stabe isn't as good a Nikon lenses then meh.

Gull
😬
The new Sigma 500 5.6 might be a good option for Sony users also.
Sigma has made some really disruptive lenses lately. That 500 5.6 is sure to eat into the profits of the first parties. I'm sure many would chose it over for instance the 100-500 7.1 if it was available for the RF mount as well.
Sigma/Tamron don't sync stabe. It's worse than not having OIS.
@@cameraconspiracies No it is not. You can turn off the stabilization on the lens if you turn the switch on the lens to off (on E mount).
On L mount, it does "sync" but doesn't work together as the stabilization algorithms are proprietary to each company. So the lens takes up 2 axes while the body handles the other 3 axes.
@@Wildridefilms No, that turns IBIS off as well. I think only Olympus let you control OIS and IBIS separately.
@@cameraconspiracies The Canon RF 600/800mm f/11 don't sync either. Optical IS is far superior to IBIS over a certain focal length threshold, and IBIS sync doesn't add much if anything. e.g. The Nikkon 600/6.3 gives you 0.5 f-stop more with sync-IS-that's negligible.
What is the lightest full frame lens with 600mm reach? Google won’t tell me. 😊
Nikon 600mm f6.3 prime that was in this video.
I am awaiting the rumored lens that this legendary slo-mo street cinematic sock less person is working on. The Kony (insert numbers here because I have no idea what I am talking about) lens.
You don't see that witch flying about in the flat earth background?
(Not a kite)
What’s wrong with the Nikon 180 to 600? I know you want a prime, but what does this lens not allow you to do? I’ve never used it but most people give it a very good review. And for 2200 that’s not too horrible of a price.
Primes usually have much better color rendition, contrast and sharpness than zooms. And the prime is small and lighter
@@romanpul Many fast primes (in the 500-600 range) are large and heavy. Yes some newer PF lenses are smaller and lighter. In any respect, the extra cost of primes (2-10 X) to attain slightly increased contrast or sharpness may be out of range for many.
@@hervedelnorte7928 Sure not denying that. Though there are still valid reasons for people to desire primes over zooms. For me it is actually the opposite, I greatly prefer zooms over primes as I favor the flexibility over in my opinion minimal improvements in image quality
I love prime lenses , that’s all that I have
I agree with you, the Panasonic Leica 200mm f2.8 is an excellent lens, but with a limited range, if a 400 f4 existed it would be perfect along with the performance of the GH7 and the G9II, this would make it very difficult for OM Systems ...
slap on the 1.4 and 2.0 tele converters.
@@GrenlandUnderVann It does not compensate for me the loss of light and sharpness. It is almost preferable to enlarge the image.
@@JAALMARZA the 1.4x on the 200 mm prime is not bad at all, making it a 280 mm f4 lens.
@@JAALMARZA as for the 2x on the 200 mm it's really not worse than the 100-400 mm at the long end.
@@GrenlandUnderVann No problem with good light, but we are talking about primes, only one stop more it's the double of light... One 400 f4 will be perfect for low light or high speed situations. Hig f = high ISO...
He’s been a Nikon fan this whole time
sorry to nit-pick (not really), but these are F stops, not T. Probably 10% off, maybe more on the less expensive lenses.
T is for Toneh...
Plenty of decent vintage nikkor primes with AF worth buying and if going lower budget then Vivatars MF Telies out there too.
@4:40 isn't that a Daft Punk song?
"stable, sharper, better..not cheaper"
😅
I've been using the sigma 500 5.6 prime on Sony for a couple weeks and it's been great for $3k.
For photos maybe, for video it won't be stable.
I’d trade sharpness or even autofocus if they just made bright telephotos that are not 2 thousands dollars. Also yeah I use the ttartisans with and without speedbooster on mft and it’s pretty good for bird in flight with pro capture, takes a lot of shots in manual mode and one is always sharp.
Wow 1st...
You looked green today overall 🤗 but that was kind of cinematic 😁👍
I have the Olympus 300mm f/4. Yeah, the field of view is equivalent to a 600mm FF, but it's still a 300mm lens which the m4/3 sensor crops to 600mm equivalence...stop kidding yourself. Of course, the cropping also produces a toneh equal to f/8. But I thought Casey liked high toneh? For what I shoot with it, high toneh is an advantage. I shoot small stuff close. I go even farther by adding a 2x teleconverter. Now it's equivalent to 1,200mm FF, but with 16 toneh's. Perfect.
As for Sony, I happily use the 200-600mm zoom. I add in the 1.4x teleconverter when needed. The 2x teleconverter I reserve for the 100-400mm Sony zoom. I find going over f/11 results in too much diffraction. Would I like a cheaper option than the 600mm f/4 Sony prime? Well, of course. But since I have the A9iii, I need Sony glass so I can shoot more than 15 fps. So... I'm stuck with Sony zooms unless Casey can lean on the bigwigs at Sony and make them give us something cheaper in telephoto primes. Go get'em Casey!!!
Hey did ya go to the F1 race in Montreal?
Not likely,, the scooter would need a bigger battery..😅
You brought back some old memories,, I went to Montreal GP when Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve were battling in the late 90's, epic rivalry
