The Custom exhaust is the reason why many don't want to deal with it.
No all of us are awesome like you guys and most of us are broke..😭
Yep. It was some work
Eh, I've seen people just block the side exhaust ports off with a gasket and just run the p-ports. Some have even just filled them solid with devcon with good results.
@@juggnautbitch but then you might as well just run an entire 13b rew bridge port or something.. the side exhaust ports move more air than the PP and have some serious potential.. combined with the peripheral ports, you can move SO much more air.. that's the point.
Finnaly... Directly From the source... Thanx...
This what i want for
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
@@KyleMohanRacing ur welcome...
I wish someday maybe you make 3-4 rotor hybrid rene and share it in ur channel youtube...
😁
I've been thinking about doing this. The RUclips algorithm is some kind of magic wizard to recommend this. Now the next problem:
How to convince the wife that we need to set money aside for this!! 😂😂
👍
Same but semi peripheral as well, with a supercharger, to go in a Miata..... Alll the air in alll the exhaust out lol. An engine is just an air pump 🤙🏽 and power to weight is key for a quick car. Also like the saying, "horse power is expensive, sawzaw blades are cheap" 😂🤘🏽
Bahaha, my problem is I have too many hobbies, not enough money, and I like my air conditioning IN my 'racecar'. It makes me happy seeing people like Kyle post these videos so I can live vicariously through them! 😂
@@HairyTheCandyMan lol, I'm a different breed man 😂 my 7 is completely gutted. No AC, no heat, no ducting or anything. Only wiring under the dash.
Whoa, I didn’t realize you could port those out so easily. That’s really cool!
Great video would be awesome to see a new and updated documented video on this topic. Maybe even bring that custom manifold to the market
We will have exhaust flanges and other parts available soon
Finally, some information about this! When researching about this subject a couple months back, I was surprised at the lack of information about this on the forums.
Do you know if this would work well in an N/A semi-PP setup? And, do you know if these housings allow the use of an OMP? Currently have a spare engine disassembled and am thinking of tackling something like this if it seems to make sense.
Thanks for sharing this, you made my day!
Yep. Was a great project
If you ever go the NA semi-PP/hybrid exhaust route, definately post some results! Very curious to know how it turns out.
Also, if I were to build a rotary, I'd keep the OMP too but plumb it to a proper 2-stroke oil tank. I don't know if the electronic forced lubrication OMP off a new 2-stroke sled might work or would be too complicated to integrate in a standalone ECU.
@@jnmason6283 sure :) by the way I do have the OMP and it is indeed modified with a SOHN adapter to pull the oil from an external oil tank! Very nice setup indeed
Wondering if you were able to get your engine running. I have a Renesis that needs rotor housings and I heard about the hybrid thing a few months back but never did try to find out more. In time I think I’m going this route as well… except for the semi p.p.
@@jnmason6283 I have one running now
Def would love to see more of this
I follow angle motorsports and they have brought this setup glad there are other enthusiasts. Awesome work guys
I remember reading the motoiq article years ago and was always curious why there wasn't much info about the hybrid 13b. Thank you for going into detail about the build! Would be cool to see something similar in a different chassis to take advantage of the renesis intake ports, if the motor could be mounted well
Thanks for watching
saw another vid of a PP hybrid in an rx8 today. This should become more popular @ 11psi 400+ is amazing
Always knew there was HUGE potential in this concept. Had a buddy make a Na carb set up which was interesting.
Glad u finally shared some results.
I wonder did u guys find some limits I regards to Boost and reliability?
Did u keep it at 11psi for racing,?
Did u guys pull it down after the championship and recheck tolerances and housing/port/seals condition?
Sorry for all the questions, but I fully intend trying this set up one day.
Thanks in advance.
Ps. Any video of it racing during the championship?
Glad i found this video, my motor was built here in Sydney Australia very similar to this, mild port, pp exhaust, studded etc. basically as you describe here, im only weeks away from fitting a supercharger kit also designed here in Sydney using the Procharge D1SC running low boost 8-10psi max. for reliability, hoping to achieve some real power gains, seeing the results you got with the 'hybrid' is very promising, thanks
This is such a better idea than porting out your existing plate
If you don't care about $
@@KyleMohanRacing hey man if it's the only sports car that you have and you want to have fun with it it's all about more smiles per mile the thing I love about the RX8 is I can't stop smiling when I drive it 😁

Looks like your team is starting to make parts for the public for this conversion.... Can't wait. I'm about to get my rx8 rebuilt this weekend.
This is awesome... Have been thinking about doing this for a while now. Now this gives me a lot more confidence.
Do you plan to consider building anything in the near future ? An in depth build vlog would be awesome maybe even an NA version for the common users out their would be awesome to see be interesting to see how well it performs with a non studded block an running NA possibly with or without a standalone ecu aswell , I've been wanting to build one of these with my 6port renesis spare engine for some time now about over a year I've been researching how to do it for daily use , very interesting to say the least, loved this content man has me amped as always to see an madaz build like this with decent amount of information aswell hats off to you sir 💜💙
I would love to see it running. I'm wondering what it sounds like.
It Sounds unique.
@@KyleMohanRacing can we hear?
@@infamousbkp pretty sure John Vargas has this in his RX8 now.
Tune into Angel Motorsports YT channel for more. John wants to put a new turbo on it and shoot for 600hp

I can’t wait for the electric side of this Hybrid. Next video?
I have a 1991 Rx7 & and 2007 Rx8 was gonna see if these would slap together, to bad i don't have the funds to have new but that has always been the story of my cars and they still treat me good.
Awesome idea I have always thought it was an option, I was thinking of a smaller hole like a semi pp size but big is better😁, keep up the great content love it.
Hi Kyle. If you just put the GSLSE housings and not run a turbo do you need to get new computer management system. Will just doing this make a difference.
Would this work for an NA application? Personally, I have never been a huge fan of turbo cars. Always liked NA. I am getting close to the point of needing a rebuild on my 09 RX8. So, this might be a fun thing to try out if it works NA.
I would love to know if you could get a na hybrid rx8 running with all other stuff original and just using mazdaedit.
OMG PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REPLICATE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD OR HAVE A KIT AVAILABLE especially since Mazda is now remaking a lot of the FC factory parts again this will allow people to buy these housing brand new and have them for the hybrid build. Please provide more info on this maybe build parts or even a step by step engine assembly video. I don't know if you noticed or not but the RX8 has gained more popularity again since 2017 which means the market is back in full swing. Having info out there like this will allow the community to be just a great as the rx7 community I'm 100% for more info on this great video
Great intel Kyle. Have you dynoed this hybrid setup NA without the turbo? Does the extra peripheral exhaust port increase overlap?
If so could we see similar power figures to a pp ...
Would love to see more indepth/detail about the development and build of this engine, as well as the rest of the stuff around it... fuel, turbo, etc.
where do i get these magnificent templates i’ve been looking all over mazdatrix and kmr store online haven’t yet found a 6 port bridgeport template im really looking foward to do this with my rx8!!
These are sick and definitely my dream for my 8 but the custom fab makes it a little non-viable for me
👍
Love it mate please upload more info!
I have mines done a year ago now and finished it right before the covid shut everything down. Just got the adaptronic and doing base tunning on it. Wondering how much HP I should be expecting @kmr
Depends on the setup amount of boost you're running , fueling etc tune will determine alot but from a novice point of view I would assume atlest 350hp hoping for around that range atlest, goodluck with the build an turn man sounds awesome as
Not boosting it (yet) its NA at moment; )
I actually ran this set up N/A a few years ago, just wish I could've dyno'd it
Manifolds in both variations would help its my personal hold up. Turbo manifolds with downpipe and NA manifolds. Of they were available more people would tackle this build
I plan on doing a Hybrid turbo build on my 4 port RX8.
Bruh, Dahmy-Boi needs ta see this sheit.
so y’all are using both the stock rx8 exhaust as well as a traditional peripheral port at the same time?
Again, my choice would be an RX-8 with Peripheral Intake Port, with a Reed-Valve, Side Exhaust Port, Side Intake Ports fully clogged, side intakes are good for idle, low rpm, low load, but once port overlap is eliminated, Peripheral Ports are better.
With a RV in PPort, and a glow plug in trailing plug hole, Toyota obtained 9% economy improvement.
Glow plug are available for Diesel, as ignitors for heating devices, also in small turbines.

The real question that does not seem to be answered in the comments below is what would this yield in n/a form. Seems like a solid fix to to the issue.
Its good. Ive got a setup
VERY curious about how this would be set as a high RPM N/A build????
Exactly what I was thinking
Hey Kyle. What did you for the exhaust manifold gasket?
Did you make up something custom or just use RTV?
can i just buy the mazda rx7 housings and put it on my rx8? Will everything fit together perfectly?
Kyle, did you keep the APV working on that setup? Or did you remove the whole system (even cutting the tubes)? Thanks
ive been wondering if this has been done, GLAD TO SEE IT HAS! I have looked around a little, after realizing it has been done before. ANYWAY I was wondering how exactly yall ran this hybrid without blocking off the side ports? Like I said, ive had the idea about going hybrid as I have 2 renesis engines, one I want to keep original and the other go hybrid like this with glse housings and boost it but was wondering maybe not block off the side ports with zinc or block off plates as I have heard people around forums saying there is short lived success around blocking the side ports off with zinc. Any knowledge or advice is greatly appreciated!!!
There is no reason to block the side ports. That would reduce power and efficiency. Not sure what people are thinking. (If you block the exhaust side ports and add GSLSE Rotor housings.. all you're doing is making an old school 13b)??? Lol.
@@KyleMohanRacingOH MY GOSH YOU RESPONDED!!! Im guessing most block off the side ports so it's easier to make a header...but no one wants to admit that lol
I have another question for you about regrooving the rotor to fit bigger apex seals would be needed if you're shooting for 400hp?
but will the sideseals still suffer from exaust heat with side exaust port major flaw with renesis i reakon.unless the extra traditional exaust port takes some of that heat away interesting
I wonder what this na 51ida would sound like with a titanium exhaust. 🤤
I think it would be awesome
I've been toying with the idea of rew/re swapping my Rx8 rolling shell, but the idea has always bounced around about running the 13b housings with the REN plates and building a custom manifold. My big question is, compared to a stock renesis how was the lower end drivability of this engine setup? Hard to tell from the video, but was the rx8 lower intake ssv system still retained?
No valves where used. Its drivability was fantastic. Just like any car the drivabilty at this point was relative to the turbo, and ecu tune. Think of an FD3S setup.
Thanks, See many of us on the forums that followed the thread about this build were questioning the 'street-ability' of a build like this. Mainly due to how large the manifold is, we would figure the turbo lag would be an issue. The other argument was about how large the exhaust/intake overlap would be and what issues that would cause.
Do you suppose the stock intake/valve system could be maintained to help with low end torque? I imagine this system wasn't needed for racing and you went with this other LIM.
@@mincvinyl Nope, none of those where concerns or issues. Drives like a good fd3s street port. No issues with over lap. GSLSE, AND Renesis blocks have minimal overlap so you would only get that if you Bridgeport the intake. Over lap is usually porting influenced.
@@KyleMohanRacing Thanks again, maybe i'll bring this up to the guys on the forums
@@mincvinyl lol, basically port timing creates over lap. Not volume. And when your talking about manifolding think of all of the aftermarket setups for earlier 13 bees these motors love to get air in but you have to be able to get out the RX8 probably has the largest intake volume so your just matching up the potential for exhaust flow in getting rid of stagnant heat buildup in the exhaust chamber.
Awesome
you could semi pp intake the housing too i would put that in a FD for a bit more space for the turbo too
Have you done the math on intake volume and timeing? It would just make it really peak power. Vs nice broad power... kinda kills the power band in my opinion.
Would something like this be possible to be used on the street on daily use
Depends how the traffic is in your place, or else it'll just be annoying unable to put the power to the wheels
"Streetable" = your personal tolerance. Everything is streetable if your willing to make compromises.
I have an 09 RX8 R3. What would the cost be to have this work done? Something to seriously consider when it's time to rebuild my engine...
Hey kyle do you think you can send us the engine mount set up you used I'd like to see how you solved that headache and what other changes you had to make like spark plugs, oil lines, ect. If it's not to much trouble man it's an interesting concept but I want to know all the details I'm currently at a stand still with gains the manifold wouldn't be to hard I'm guessing you Frankensteined two and made one that's how I would have done it. I just really need to see the mounting before i would commit to this hahahaha
Can you guys offer this service for my car!!! I would love to keep my 13B and not go the LS way
I was wondering what else besides 13b gsl-se housings, exhaust manifold and regrooving renesis rotors is needed to make this work as NA street car. I am thinking about blocking/welding renesis exhaust ports and using 13b gsl-se exhaust manifold. What about ECU?
Hey can I ask how much lag did you get with your turbo spool ? and also did the engine barp nicely with the added overlap ??
how would this compare to an rew swap though? that would be a really interesting comparison i believe
I’m doing one , either racing or street or for both
What was the safe rpm limit for this setup I might try to do this to my na fc if I can get some motors to intertwine
What trans did you use?
wait so the old and the new line up the same?
Quick question, can you mate the plates without studding the Irons? and without deepening the apex grooves?
Yes, definitely. The studding and RX7 apex seals are just upgrades to support high HP, not required for assembly or fitment in anyway.
What is the address of your store? How do I get in touch with you?
I want to convert my R3 to work with greddy turbo like this.
Don't want huge hp, just 300~400 rwhp would be comfortable.
I’m working on one right now I’m kinda stuck because of the motor Mount and making a turbo manifold
Yep. That took some work for sure.
whats the pricing like with this setup? it seems to me that rx8 engines costs about half of what a rx7 engine does. do you think this could be done as a cheaper option for someone wanting to turbo their rotary? also can you use the stock intake manifold with this configuration?
Na, its a pricey build as I mention in the video. There is extra work evolved to modify the Renesis for reliability and power. Yes you could use stock intake but will still need a aftermarket ecu with fly by wire control.
Renesis engine or Fc 6port ?
Can this exhaust be applied to an engine without a turbo? Intake 2x48mm IDA.
do you think this would be reliable to drift on
Yes. We built it for racing
Please build a NA version with as much stock rx8 parts as possible.
Great video
Would have been a lot simpler if this was an NA config. Still, a great built.
Or supercharged
Awsome
Thanks
Hi i want build my rennesis hybrid where i find the custom exahust manifold and if possible give me more info about what i need to complete the process thanks
Was you able to keep the electric steering?
So I'm guessing the 5 letter housings were used because of the location of the exhaust port huh? 🤔
Yep. Also. Its one of the only easy options. GSLSE housings have water seal groves
@@KyleMohanRacing that's also makes sense
is there somewhere we can find footage of it running/driving?
Might build this for my daily 🤔 carbureted 🥇
hey can i get one of the exhaust manifolds
We will have stainless flanges available soon
See my question is why no one has taken the stock iorns weilded the exhaust ports closed. Lap them and ceramic coat them. Then go with p-port exhaust. I may be off my rocker.
All that does is make a old 13b out of a renesis. I think its because its cheaper to just build a 13b p port that will most likely perform better... than a conversion to a renesis block. A hybrid street port takes advantage of what a renesis has to offer.
So GSL-SE housings, but was it renesis end and centre plates? What about the rotors and eshaft?
Yeah did the eshaft need to be changed?
Also what about the OMP?
@UC3ogDU3J_qbnHO_6OEi950A Hi, one question please. Is possible to increase power, using the rx7 housing (GSL-SE) to create an hybrid multiport exhaust on aspirated renesis? Or need absolutely a turbo? Thanks.
If you had an exauat manifold that mated to the stock midpipe id put this in my RX8 tomorrow.
Doesn't John Vargas own that turbo setup now?
yea, he bought it from Mazdatrix recently. At one point we planned to offer a kit but it was expensive.
@@KyleMohanRacing thought so haha, isn't everything rotary expensive tho ;)
Why do you need a stand-alone could you not adapt rx8 intake
Hey Kyle, planning to make an experiment too, would you advice me to use all side ports? Some people tend to block them off. What about blocking the Siamese ports and only use the side exhaust ports?
I would use all the ports just as we did. It worked great. Why would you ever want to reduce exhaust flow on a motor that has exhaust flow issues. We ported all side and gslse exhaust ports.
@@KyleMohanRacing Well, in thoery you can loose exhaust pressure that can make your turbo spool slower, at least that what some people told me.... What's the max boost you tried to run on thi setup? And thanks for the info...
@@josezuma the RX8 doesn't have enough factory exhaust flow. By adding available ports your increasing you exhaust flow. I dont think you can go to big without crazy porting. We only got gains in our testing. I would imagine people are forgetting that the RX8 is exhaust chocked.
@@KyleMohanRacing Sure, I get your point, but by adding all those exhaust ports you will end up with bigger ports than REW, right?
I'm asking because I'm interested in doing this experiment and I need as much info as possible.
What ECU did you guys run?
My goal is to keep my rx8 na nd have the multi port on the exhaust and on the irons keep the first port oem, second street port and on the back end an extended street port
Do you know the part number for the rotor housings
Where is the engine now?
Hey kyle would it be possible to use the stock intake, and would i have to use two separate exhaust gaskets, also im sure people on a tight budget can use the stock header flipped around for boosted applications.
Yea. We just didn't want to deal with a electric throttle body so this was an easy solution.
@@KyleMohanRacing one more question, did it brap?
@@jimbowcracklehead8071 it had a very mild brap. It actually sounded like the V6 Oldsmobile indy car motors from years back to me. It had its own sound. I think if I did it again I would change the port timing a little and I could make it brap hard.
@@KyleMohanRacing what are you waiting for? Start another one, also im not too versed on exhaust timing, what exactly wouldnt you do? Leave the peripheral exhaust un ported?
@@KyleMohanRacing do you have videos of it racing, I would love to hear this thing sing.
Would a 4 port Renesis with semi PP GSL SE housings yield similar results?
No. Semi p ports will completely change the power band to a hi rpm race motor vs a well rounded drivable motor. It would be completely different results, worse gas mileage, worse drivableity, harder to tune, won't idle well... all normal p port / semi p port stuff. If thats what you want... power from 6k to 11 k. They are fun. Basically a on off switch of power... If you want drivableity and smooth power then don't do a semi p.
It will make a higher peak power but I care alot more about usable power vs just a peak...
Semi p ports are like putting a drag cam in a street car. Easy power, but not the best rpm band.
Im Wondering , Could you run a FD centre plate , FD housings and just have the renesis end plates ?
OR would a FD end plates, FD housings and RX8 Centre plate be better ?
To many water seals?
Haha yes! I mean more just the idea of the centre housing FD exhaust port and just one renesis port per rotor instead of 2.
@@xile_hc we didn't test that combination but based on our testing it would reduce power using an FD center. And make it impossible to use any currently available intake manifolds as the FD pattern on a center is different. So not my recommendation but if you test it let me know what you get.
I wonder if this would have any significance keeping it an n/a engine and the potential gain
You will definetly see more power from it and with this set up bridgeporting will acually have more of a benefit since berforehand intake porting was close to a waste of time since all the limitations are the exhuast ports in the renisis
@@mdelite5297 hmmm that is true. Bridgeporting is rly not worth it for the renesis lol, but that is valid you make a good point.
Bridgeport with PP.... PP with two thortle body plus bridge port with fd manifold...
Hmmm.. Seems kinda intersting NA
@@heruhadianmudjenan4377 maybe the renesis can finally hit 250whp 😂
Ammiienn.. Lol
can't you tune with versatuner/mazdaedit since its still a renesis plate? I have a turbo 8 using versatuner
I recommend a good stand alone ECU. Like a haltech elite
@@KyleMohanRacing for occasional track and street use. What is the hp you would recommend for that setup? 400-500? Or would you say REW swap it .
Where did you get the intake mainofold
It was from a supercharger kit.
@@KyleMohanRacing thank you
how can i buy one?
Could I use S4 housings for this hybrid build ?
you can use any housing as long as you get the water seal grooves cut into them.
Does this affect exhaust emissions???
My guess is that it would make them worse as it's allowing the exhaust to escape faster.
From what I've read the side exhaust ports on the renesis are a slight restriction by design to keep some of the unburnt hydrocarbons in for another cycle.
So with this mod you're trading higher emissions for less heat build up and better exhaust flow. A good deal if you ask me!
Yes, but just run e85 🤷🏽♂️ burns a lot cleaner
Add in a semi p an omgggg
Please do,
while this may have been a success in your application, this setup has built a reputation for being very problematic and unreliable. People will do these engine builds and overhype the hell out of it and once finished and the car is running with it you might see a few idling videos and then they just disappear with no explanation. I would like to see more real world results with these and how they can be made reliable for everyday street use, but until then my opinion of them remains the same
I have seen posts in regards to the hybrid over the years. Was never able to get any real good posts on the outcome. Do you know where the problems have occurred?
@@stevecarlisle3323 I do not. No one has ever had a clear answer. Nothing but positive things have ever been said by the people overhyping them, but then just nothing. They just disappear and no updates at all about them.
Actually I don't see any information online about this set up being problematic. I think what you mean is the set up is difficult to make and expensive. We didn't have any problems and the other shops that I know that have finished the project were very successful. I think generally the problem is people don't finish the project. And this is hardly an over hyped project we did this 10 years ago and won a championship and nobody seems to know about it. lol
@@stevecarlisle3323 There were no real problems for us. Very reliable and straightforward. I think the only problem is people don't finish their projects lol
@Toby Santiago Yeah those are pretty easy to use setups and don't require much fabrication
What transmission were you guys running to sustain that kind of horse power?
JDM RX8 5 speed in the end. Stronger gears inside
Wonder how the hybrid would run supercharged
