The dummies being tossed about to simulate Arsenio's overzealous audience members was the icing on the cake for this awesome skit!
The best part!
6:24 I'll bet that when Victoria was getting on the floor, she would've gotten even more comfortable if she also took off her shoes!
The audience are the stars of this skit!
At first I thought the black woman dummy puppet was Ellen Gleghorne LOL - The end was awesome when they showed the audience from behind.
😂😂😂
Rob Lowe is brilliant in this sketch
He nailed the vocal and physical mannerisms! Relentlessly!
I was going to ask if that was him lol
I just discovered this sketch and it's already one of my all-time favorites from SNL
Me too 😂 @@mikeodonnell6799
Listening to Dana Carvey and Spades podcast brought me here. Hilarious
same!
what did he say
Same it's a great podcast!
Yup
Me too!
Look at the extended fingers
this is one of my top 5 funniest snl skits, it could be number 1 lol
The massive over exaggeration of Arsenio’s mannerisms are not so over the top until you see this skit. Then you realize, that’s exactly how Arsenio was in his hey day.
it's funny, I had to go back and watch an episode, one where Lowe was a guest, and i'll be damned if it was pretty similar to the SNL parody. Makes the sketch even funnier and more brilliant imo.
4:27 That guy doing the fish...LOL
fishy!!! fishy!!!!!!....too 90´s!!!!!!!..yessssss!!
Saw this when it first came out. Recorded with my vcr..and saw it over 100 times. Still kicks ass!!
The fingers have me dead. Brilliant performance.
1:31 the guy in the front row kills me every time the way he points and grins
Yo, I’ve been a loyal SNL fan since a child…….WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN??!?! I’M IN TEARS
March 1990 - I was in Indiana touring James Dean's hometown and watched this in a motel room. Died.
How this is not on the Mt. Rushmore of SNL skits is beyond me. Absolutely hilarious.
I wish Rob Lowe would have reprised the role. This was sooooooooooooo incredibly over the top and I love it!
What's amazing is Rob hasn't aged a day since this was on over 30 years ago.
For a couple DECADES, I thought I had dreamt this sketch. It wasn't until a few years ago I learned it was real.
Me too!
Victoria Jackson was smoking hot in this one.
It's a parody of the Arsenio Hall show....
@@johnberry8367 thanks for the tip.
she was always smoking hot. Funny too. Just too bad she went batshit crazy.
@@johnberry8367 interesting! Tell us more please ☺️
Yes yes yes…oh yes….yes yes yes.
This has resided in my subconscious since first it aired.
I've watched this three times in a row and I can't stop laughing. I keep finding new things to laugh hysterically about. The audience is a huge part of why this is so damn funny. Also, who knew Rob Lowe was so damn funny??
This sketch clearly deserves more views!!! Unbelievable!! 😂 😭 😂
Freaking phenomenal skit. I remember watching this LIVE on the Saturday it debut.
Was listening to Dana Carvey, David Spade and Rob Lowe on a Podcast the other day. Dana said this was the funniest sketch of that episode and that the writers wanted to push the craziness and have people so excited, they'd burst into flames. Network / Lorne said no.
What podcast?
@@groovy-mom Dana Carvey and David Spade have a new podcast called "Fly on the Wall," and Rob Lowe was one of their first guests.
@@ianwallace3082 Thank you!!
The sketch was supposed to end with the entire audience on fire but they couldn't figure outhow to pull it off.
Ahahaha, that's hilarious
I always thought this is the most underrated sketch of all time, this is up there with cowbell and chippendales
Better than both of those - up there with Jeopardy - Alex, Sean, Burt and French Stewart.
Cowbell is overrated and weak. Chippendales was amazing for 1989. Or whenever it was.
Surpasses both. Easily.
I like the one connected to this, Johnny Carson as....CARSENIO
@@davidfrench5407 Hmmm ... is this the David French of 'The Dispatch?'
At 0:55 and 2:13, there is a slightly nerdy, bespectacled audience member in a blue suit jacket who is none other than Bob Odenkirk! He was a writer on SNL at the time. Who knew he'd go on to such comedic glory?
And dramatic acclaim
Omg!!!!
👁️👄👁️
Beat me to it. Now known as a badass action movie star. Back then… more of a calculator operator.
You can also see Conan at the end!
Me and my brother have laughed about this skit for years!!!!!
I remember watching this when it aired and I could not control myself. Did not think that Rob Lowe had that level of comedy in him, but he really nails the caricature of Arsenio. His fingers, the body language the suit.....Was one of the best skits ever on SNL only perhaps bested by Rain Man/Pete Rose. The manikins flying in the air had me on the floor.
He does this skit so well. .
Still one of my favorite sketches of all time.
I’ve NEVER seen this b4. I’m a brotha and i think this is HILARIOUS! They could never do this now. Who knew Rob was this funny.
Thank you RUclips….this was a riot!!!!!!!!😂😂😂
Absolute gold, that would never be allowed today.
Rob lowe has those Pan finger extensions going!
Can’t believe I missed this growing up. Absolutely brilliant.
Rob Lowe is Hilarious!! He actually looks like a light skinned black guy. This sketch is genius. 😂😂😂😂😂
Holy shit just heard about this from Dana carvey on his podcast. Incredible sketch. Back when SNL wasn’t watered down
"Carsenio" is another great sketch in a similar mold.
Same. What a great podcast.
People always say that, but the show was really hated back then.
@@opaljk4835 It might have been hated but it wasn’t the Uber safe watered down bullshit it is now. They had a reoccurring sketch about a Boy Scout getting molested by Alec Baldwin for christs sake.
Linda Blair and Victoria Jackson are both so hot
I can remember watching this live at 9 yrs old! Amazing
This must the only sketch that SNL did where the audience featured more than the cast :)
Never seen this one before today. Man this is funny...the audience reactions were brilliant, loved the puppets too.
This is seriously the single greatest performance by a host in SNL history. Better than anything Steve Martin or Baldwin ever did
Pretty accurate depiction of arsinio hall
I was about 14 yo when this aired, and it's still hilarious lol
If you look carefully you can see Bob Odenkirk in the audience
underrated sketch
I remember that on the following Monday I watched the Arsenio Hall Show and Asenio said, "Hello, I'm Arsenio Hall, not to be confused with Arsenio Beckman...!" or something like that! Arsenio seemed to think that it was funny, or at least that is how I remember it.
Ofc Arsenio wasn't gonna get mad at this it wasn't even that bad. Now the one Keenan Ivory Wayans did on In Living Color was harsh and much funnier.
Arsenio Hall didn't think the Keenan Ivory Wayans parody was funny. I was wondering what his reaction to this one was. And this was before In Living Color.
@@blueblur2329 I don't even know the difference. They both were good as they grossly exaggerated Arsenio's mannerisms and theatrics.
This needs to be a weekly show
The audience is more out of control than the Carsenio skit which was also hilarious 😂😆
They were really hyped up
lmao
Such an awesome impersonation of Arsenio, even down to the extra long fingers Arsenio has. This has to be Rob Lowes finest moment in SNL history.😅😅😅😂😂
I remember recording this on VHS on Comedy Central in high school. I took it to my friends’ house and we were dying laughing. Good times
The guy in the glasses is killing me.
I miss non-cue card SNL days.
I miss funny SNL days.
You used to have to actually be talented to be in movies and tv. There used to be a standard to being a celebrity
Dana and David's podcast brought me here thx guys
Rob should've brought a show out like this
This is up there with Carsenio
I think this was Rob Lowe getting back at Arsenio Hall because Arsenio made fun of him so much on the show because of a sex scandal that Rob was involved in
Lol you know that asshole Arsenio flipped his fade when he saw this
Really?
He did mention it a lot but wasn't this before that episode of the show?
He looks like Stephen Curry
About one out of a thousand snl sketches are funny. This is one of them.
In 1990 it was 1 of 5. F NBC
Funniest SNL ever!
Brilliant, total gem
Those dummys….lol
Damn Victoria Jackson's legs. Whoa.
I think Robert Smigel wrote this. He also wrote the Johnny Carson sketches, including the Carsenio sketch a year after this one.
Smigel wanted to keep amping the craziness up. He actually wanted to do something where audience members started to burst into flames. Network and Lorne said NO. Too bad. Would've made a great sketch just unreal.
SNL at its surreal, anarchic best 👌
^^ best description
Well put. Not enough of these gems.
the audience is breaking it down
Definitely the best Arsenio Hall impression!
Yeah best impersonation if Rob Lowe was trying to look like Chris Broussards brother
Lol not even close Keenan Ivory Wayans was light-years better than this
@@jasonhearn5818 Doesn't look like him in the face but everything else is spot on! Mannerisms, etc
@JohnnyTyrone77 The In living color version is the best one, Rob gets an A for effort...
that is all 😆
No WAY!!!! KEENON IVORY WAYANS ON IN LIVING COLOR WAS EASILY THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!
Rob Lowe really nailed this - the whole sketch nailed that show, but the Arsenio Hall show was such a big deal for black Americans and black culture.. 30 years later and he was still the only late night talk show host.
The show was not just a big deal for black Americans/culture but was a big deal in pop culture at the time PERIOD! That was the show everyone wanted to be on.
Everything you said was 100 except for the last part. Johnny Carson was the standard. The GOAT.
Byron Allen was a late night talk show host as was George Lopez.
@@MalEvansUSA I think what Groove was saying that Arsenio was (and still as of March 2022)the Only Black or Latino Talk Show that was seen 'coast-coast' on live free over the air national TV. Mr. Hall's show during it's ground breaking first run was on many CBS (Pre Letterman)and Fox affiliates. While Bryon Allen (much smaller audience in syndication)and George Lopez was on Turner on Basic Cable TV.
@@A_M_P_ I think 99% of the public agrees that Carson is the GOAT. However at least some Gen X and Earlier Millennials that watched this show, rank Mr. Hall as high as #2 or #3 all time Late Night Hosts. Arsenio brought the late night "entertainment" talk show into the late 20th/early 21st Century. Even now the current ones such as Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert and others was no doubt influenced by him.
Absolutely brilliant!
Rob Lowe does Arsenio Hall better than Arsenio Hall.
Lol!
Yeah Rob does a great beige watered down Arsenio....In living color skit was far better
That Erkle looking guy in the front row was stealing the show. Everyone in the crowd was awesome in this sketch.
This feels more like a SCTV sketch in the best way
Could you imagine a sketch like this airing today? Let alone getting 8 1/2 MINUTES???
Fly on the Wall podcast brought me here. Hilarious.
Where did they put the actual studio audience while they did this?
6:08 - Reminds me of "Smells like Nirvana"
Lol this is reminds me of the Eric Andre somehow.
A damn classic. Unique. Rob Lowe showing a side never seen before. And the crowd was part of the cast that day.
Though funny, you need to see Carsenio. 😂
LOL
Conan sighting at 06:35
And Bob Odenkirk on the far left -hand side.
Just like Arsinio! CARSINIO is awesome too!
holy shit how is Rob Lowe doing light skin black face still on SNL YT channel in 2022
This crowd was amazing (even if they were extras) they killed it!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Here from "Fly on the Wall" needed to check this out, so dam funny 😝
🌲☄🌲Bucking Frilliant& certainly rite there with Keenan Ivory Wayan's take on In Living Color!:)🌲☄🌲
"Backstage!"&Finger Extensions make it classic.
One of my all time faves.
If there’s a movie on Ted Bundy and Rob Lowe isn’t playing Ted I’m gonna loose it
Ur right!!! Rob played Drew Peterson in a movie about him. Not Scott Peterson (although he would be perfect) but the flashy Chicago cop who murdered 2 of his wives.
Huh? There have been several TB movies in the past few years. Your comment is only a year old.
Rob can happily allow others and himself to make fun of him.
I love and respect that.
wow this was amazing lol
Rob always said, and he was right,if you're too good looking Hollywood will give u a wide berth.
What does that mean?
Been more than a month since we cancelled a celebrity. Rob ticks all the boxes, especially for being funny as hell in this.
@horace sheffield who cares one way or the other
Idc
Should we cancel Rob Lowe for doing blackface?
😂😂😂😂😂 I’m crying
He looks like Shaun King 😆.
Rob Lowe is very talented.
😂😂😂 Hilarious! I remember this.
Someone in the writer’s room CLEARLY hated Arsenio!
With this and Carsenio, odds are good. :-)
Conan
@@jarnold3415 actually I think Robert Smigel wrote this one if the podcast "Fly on the Wall" Rob Lowe episode remembers correctly
I think it had to do with Rob Lowe wanting to get back at Aresenio. It was when Rob Lowe got exposed in some type of sex scandal and Arensio constantly made fun of him for that on the show.
Been waiting years to see this clip again
This must have been what Jonestown was like
Oedenkirk was a baby there🤣🤣🤣
Young SNL writer Bob Odenkirk in the crowd. 😆
Kenan Thompson's entire SLN career is based on this impression.
Bob Odenkirk at 0:54
One of the greatest sketches ever…
