The transitions of Ethan coming through the doors confused, injured, wary, scared, angry, finally happy, and then only to be traumatized once again is just heartbreaking
I think i might play RE. Atleast the 7 and 8, those art people make makes it seem more interesting.
I got so tired of the whole virus thing, this is like a more metaphorical or paranormal type of thing.

@@remsleeep Oh, I'd absolutely recommend 7 and 8 - but I would also advise you play the others despite their virus nature, as I think they're a total blast!
@@remsleeep While they're technically viral stuff, 7 + 8 definitely lean into the paranormal vibes over the science stuff of earlier games. 7 is entirely haunted house, demonic child movie spaced out by the occasional monster boss battle, and 8 is a complete monster mash - werewolves, vampires, haunted dolls and creatures from the black lagoon.

Can we give the props that Ethan really deserves. Not a cop or a specially trained agent just a simple a family man with nothing but pure will power and love that fought monsters beyond his comprehension all for his daughter, sadly dying in the process but he went out gloriously.

@@musfirah9341 ok so first of, the crazed woman and the man on the tv are people from the game before Resident evil village, and are relevant due to the medium of zombification in the two games being the same fungal substance. This is important because at a certain point in that game, Ethan winters is killed and reborn as a perfect copy made from the fungal material, which is a main plot point in RE: village and the reason his hand is able to be reattached so easily.
The person at the end of the animation is Ethan's daughter, who also had his partially fungal DNA and was chopped into pieces in RE: village, which Ethan then had to go around and collect to return her to full form... She was also still a baby during RE: village, which is why the cradle was in the animation. Giant pale lady, room full of dolls, the deformed guy, and the scarred guy with the cowboy hat all work under the raven themed woman who tried to resurrect her daughter using the dismembered parts of Ethan's daughter.
i love love love that you start it off with a simple head bob animation where once the viewer thinks "oh this seems to be something lower energy this time!" you smack us over the head with the fucking gorgeous gorgeous smooth camera spin and the rest of the video being a full animation. the way you animated the spin it is very very impressive too, i could very easily tell the position of ethan even with the exaggerated movements and the dizzying camera which is such an amazing feat, because that shits HARD. and the whole thing is animated wonderfully, it makes me feel how i imagine ethan is feeling too. (simple minimal animation to smooth full animation being surprising - the past/start being "blinks" of memories and much more frozen in time, because no matter how awful or lovely they were, hes so fucking hypersensitive to the Now.)
the way you do expressions also..... god. its so easy to understand how the character feels. ethan is so so expressive its so so lovely.

The fact that Ethan was only the main character of two RE games yet was the most realistic and emotional story out of all of them, at least in my opinion
Well, it’s because RE was never supposed to be realistic. It was a fun horror game about special agents who fight monsters created by an evil corporation. Lots of jokes, lots of gags, and badass extra strong characters who knew where they were going to and were ready for all the fights. It’s different for re7 and re8, since it’s a story of other perspective and different tone. Ethan is no military - just a normal dude whose girlfriend, scientist-under-cover, went missing, after what he went searching for her and accidentally gotten infected. That’s why the story feels so different - the character has an actual backstory/background, he went from “just a normal guy who’s girlfriend is missing” to “weaponized mutant working for the government’s special forces”, and all he did was trying to protect his family

leon is gonna be the mc of 4 games once re9 comes out (re2, re4, re6 as his campaign is first, re9) and jill was an mc thrice as well (re1, re3, re: revelations 1). but i think chris and jill shared being an mc in 1, so he'd have been an mc 3-4 times if we count his campaign in re6 (re1, re5, again re6, code veronica x, and idek if i wanna add re: revelations 1 to his mc list lol). and if we count claire in re2, she was the mc thrice as well (code veronica x, re2, re: revelations 2)
though imo i feel like re7-8 were more unrealistic than just zombies. i think tlou has the most realistic depiction of zombies since they arent fully dead and therefore dont decay, but re7-8 had fly vampires, werewolves, guy who can attract metal, people made entirely out of mold, severed hands that can work perfectly once attached or have goop juice on it (though this is because ethan is a mold man). unless you mean realistic bc he wanted to save his daughter, in which case i see it!

I swear, this man is one of the greatest examples of a a regular person, a father who would do anything for his family. The fact his wiki has multiple locations for his death really shows how far he went for them.

I love that Ethan grows through RE7 by facing the fact hes going to see inhuman monsters and genuinely loses all fear instead being annoyed and angry the things controlling the bakers to RE8 where hes seen everything a man could see so he just taunts and them and mocks them infront of their faces
I honestly find Ethan to be THE BEST protagonist the Resident Evil series has. He has so much depth in his character-- especially when it comes to his motive. Ethan didn't have to *go* to Louisiana; he didn't have to *go* through the village; he didn't have to risk it all for his family. But he did it anyways, because he loves his family.
I believe that's why his POV was in the first person. His motive was about love-- nothing more, nothing less.
Back to the animation- THIS WAS FUCKING INSANE... AND YOU EVEN DID THIS FLIPACLIP?!?!?!? Everything about this is.. just stunning. The movement- oh my god- they're so realistic. The shading, the storytelling, the backgrounds, the transitions-- just everything has my jaw to the floor. This is amazing, Crumb. Just utterly amazing!!!! Can't wait for the next one!
What I love most about crumbs art style is how it’s so clean, so distinct, without needing line art in the finished product. It’s art is always so well thought out with colour- the contrast is just enough to make the shapes distinct, and grab your attention, but also look like a gradient, look like one scene, look like the overwhelming setting overwhelms the character.
I don’t know anything about resident evil, but there’s a care and smooth love in cuptoast animatics that make me watch them on loop. Idk. He’s just a cool artist.

Ethan is by far the most relatable and realistic protagonist in RE
Unlike other characters he is just a normal person who gets involved in things he maybe shouldn't have been involved
He is scared of those things and doesn't fully understands them, but still faces them because of the people he loves like Mia and Rose

I really like how all the antagonists look towards Ethan (the camera) and all the people who help him during the game look away or don't look at all (Mia, Zoe, and Chris). It also then, stands to note that Rose looks towards the camera too. Now that Ethan is gone, who is she looking at? Who's antagonist is she? Or is she looking at us directly, like Ethan's been doing in the video?

I've been watching this on loop for days, and I'm surprised no one else has commented on the amazing detail of the mould crawling into frame in the door sequence, showing up in the RE8 house with the Evelyn reveal!! Cup has such an eye for detail!

this is incredible, and I'd argue an example of why art is so necessary: two games and thousands of words of a man's emotional journey in a couple minutes. the emotion is palpable; both Cuptoast and Rio Romeo did so well here!

Ethan still stands as one of my favourite protagonist in media what a lovely and tragic lil guy.
You are genuinely my favorite artist. No one else I've seen has been able to express such a vast range of deep emotion with animation so aesthetically pleasing and clean. Your animation style genuinely heals my soul and breaks it simultaneously, and you've consistently made me feel feelings for little pixels on the screen. And the fact you do all of this with Flipaclip and your finger, completely self taught, is incredible. It's magnificent. I'm always in awe due to your work, and there is no one else I'd rather call my favorite than you. Thank you, for giving us such a masterpiece time after time

Hello!I have never interacted with this fandom, but this animation nearly had me in tears. The art---impeccable. Your style is so incredibly delicious to look at and the way you were able to capture the character's agony and grief and trauma was so tangible that despite my lack of knowledge of the lore I felt like I understood him completely. The use of color, the movement, the transitions---you did so wonderful!! And it matched perfectly to Rio's song, matched the hopelessness and futility that they had been able to portray in their music. I was genuinely moved! Never stop creating!

The sequence of Ethan opening the doors again and again was just!!! And then the way the shot swayed as he walked to the covered mirror, mimicked later in the penultimate scene through Rose’s walking and the flower petal drifting across his gravestone was so powerful

Ethan’s gotta have one of the most tragic stories I’ve ever seen. He saved his family time and time again but never really got to enjoy it bc something also came up again right up until his death. Truly a doomed character from the start to end. His death genuinely was so heartbreaking to me especially since he’s one of my fave characters. :[
On a happier note tho this animations looks absolutely stellar!! You’ve really outdone yourself with this one! I love the amount of detail you added especially with the transitions! My fave part was from 0:36 to 0:45 with the detail of Ethan being consumed by the mold! The animation there looked stunning!! Awesome job!! 💚 :]

I don't remember too much about RE7 or 8, having watched playthroughs years ago, but I feel like the end of this really implies how Ethan's daughter is now dealing with the same shit, but already ready to lash out at whatever comes close. She saw what happened to her Dad and doesn't want to let it happen again. (I have no idea if that's true but I LOVE THE VISUALS OF THIS)

It’s so cool seeing the switchup between the usual cute happy or bright animations!! Both are absolutely incredible and you’ve come so far as an animator!! I’ve been rewatching for like the fourth time now lol
After watching both RE videos, the juxtaposition of Ethan and Rose on opposite sides of the screen and how he carries the body parts is so well done. Your level of skill and execution is something I strive to be as an artist! 0:31 was definitely the part that stood out the most to me. But I think that's just because it matches up to the song so well

Honestly, I can never stay unamused by these animations and the way the show Ethan's life and sufferings. I can't help but feel so bad for him after what he'd been through, sacrificing his own life for his family. And even after his death he still was helping Rose.
I genuinely can't help but feel so bad seeing Zoe just sitting there with her cigarette. Ethan went through so much but seeing everyone else that he passed by in the game makes me feel so much worse, especially with Zoe and her family that got ruined, only for Ethans family in turn to also be ruined. First horror game I've truly cried to when it ended :(( this animation is so beautiful representing everyone in the game

I did not realized that was even Ethan Winters before 0:47 came with the cut-off hand, shotgun, and the blood that progressively gets all over him, realizing that what I saw beforehand was his wife and baby-then shortly after, poetically, comes the Bakers family.

OH MY GODS I had no idea you knew this song too!!!! And Y’ALL this. This is a crowning achievement of an animation, like you have NAILED facial expressions and the whole-body physical acting of the emotions behind them in a way that feels like a culmination of all your skills thusfar. From the way he shudders while he cries, to how his body almost sags when he kicks in the door, to the pushed-intensity of the hat man with the scars glaring daggers into the camera- yall selling me on a character and a game I know nothing about just with /this/. And I gotta say, those bits of melancholy (and the scene with the crib- which gods that background was gorgeous, I’d save it as a wallpaper) really make all the hell you show him going through hurt more. I’m intrigued and I’m also totally replaying this like eight more times, because seriously it’s that good. Top ten animations of this year, easy. Love it!
