- Ginny Buckley reviews a car for people that wanna have fun - the 1997 model Honda Prelude. She'll be overviewing it's performance and handling, as well as seeing how practical it is. The '97 Prelude comes with a 2.2 litre V-Tech engine, which produces 185bhp. Plus we'll be speaking to Stephen Hollings from Honda UK, who'll be telling us more about the Prelude and what they hope to achieve with this, the 5th generation model.

"And this is where the fun starts"
*Drives in circles*
Obviously you never drove a 4ws Prelude in circles...
It's a woman
Jordan Adams no lsd for sure
I was expecting some “display of power”
@@endless_touge I don't think that one has 4ws
Middle aged guy here, who has been daily driving this Lude since 2002. I have a black 97 SH that I drove hard and didn't really maintain things - yet it's still running fine on almost all factory original parts (except consumables), with no major repairs, and just a lot of smiles in the corners. It's lived outside the whole time, so the clear coat is pretty shot, she does burn some oil, and she could use new shocks, bushing/mounts, but I can't complain given her age. It's insane seeing all the comments about folks always wanting this car or regretting ever selling it....
The red one is the top of the line Type S redtop 220hp. The silver is automatic 185hp. The blue one is base model non-vtec single cam 2.0 liter.
brits/europe never got the 220hp model
@@aleksiesko885 Europe got later the H22A8 200hp
@@aleksiesko885 That's why they mention it's a JDM Type-S. They also said it'd be released afterwards in the UK, but we're still waiting 😂
I absolutely love Preludes, but I was never a fan of the headlights on gen 5. Everything else about it is beautiful. I love the clean, well proportioned design.
I used to feel that way too but as I get older it has started to really appeal to me now, especially when it is in a darker colour and lowered slightly.
Reminds me of a weatherman reciting the forecast, having no clue what they are talking about since they did not (nor were they able to) do the assessment.
On a different note, quite amusing how the video shows its age, yet the car does not.
The 5th gen prelude really is a gem of that era.
HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT TO PRONOUNCE PRELUDE CORRECTLY JEEZ LADY
I’ve always had a soft spot for the BB6... would LOVE to own this car as a daily, and save the S2000 for the weekends 🙃
I think I can explain this better about the type S. Think about running a race on foot around a track. If you are on the inside lane during a curve, the person on the outside lane has to run faster because he has more distance to travel around the outside as opposed to your inside lane. To keep the car tracking around the curve better; it gives more power(speed RPMs) to the outside wheels to push you neater into a corner without as much steering involvement. Now it's called Super Handling by ACURA.
BrewBlaster Not sure if you'll see this reply, but thank you. I've owned a bone stock 97 prelude SH for about a year and I was never quite able to find a simple explanation for ATTS. The only problem with this car is that it loudly rides at 4000rpm at 80mph on the highway, consuming a lot of gas. A 6th gear would be amazing.
4th gen 1992-1996 prelude was the cream of the crop. Styling and handling 👌
Nothing beats the 90s
Back in 2000, I purchased a 97 Prelude, automatic. Did a few minor upgrades, exhaust and AEM, 18’ wheels. After realizing the potential of this car, I changed the transmission to 5 speed stick, added headers and ACT clutch. Unfortunately I threw a rod about two weeks later, shit happens right? lol. After this, I put my Prelude in Frankenstein mode... went all out. Turbonetics t3/t4 hybrid, eagle pistons and rods... , did a swap to a Jspec h22, best decision I ever made for my Prelude. At 8lbs boost, it was hitting 300+ to the wheels. Lots of other cosmetic upgrades as well, the car ended up being more for show than the track, but I took it all up and down the east coast, with my trailer and on the highway... definitely had my fun with her
I thought it was called the Prelude because it was part of Hondas "musical cars" like the Concerto and Ballad.
its still called prelude dude
It is
I heard that as well.
The Type S also has a 220hp H22A engine, so it's definitely the one to buy
Callum Dickinson type SH too
Andy Schroeyers Type SH only has 200HP, but mechanically otherwise it’s almost identical to the Type S
That's the design I prefer...
vtec kicks at 5500rpms not 3500, this car rides at 3500 on the highway in top gear
Joe blow she doesn't know and she'll never know
Funny to hear them talk up the semi automatic gearbox. Time has proven this was one of the least reliable automatic gearboxes Honda ever made. It's actually slightly amusing they even offered this car with one. The 5 speed on the other hand is great fun, but could use a taller top gear.
nknasi or even a sixth gear
Only seem to find Auto's nowadays no manuals seem to be left in the higher/faster spec.
Back when Techno/Trance is the default soundtrack. And classic Ginny too...
Nonetheless, I would love to have a Prelude like this, preferably off the 1997 showroom floor. And Manual transmission.
The one with ATTS in Canada was called the Type-SH.
Same in the US. I'm still daily driving my 97 SH, but I would have bee curious to try the JDM or Euro 4ws version...
I had a 1988 4WS Prelude. It handles to well. I took a curve at like 160kmh and the tires just scrubbed a bit. Scared the shit out of me but i am surprised it took that corner so well.
2000 was the last time for SH in Canada. the 2001 was just called an SE. i was going to buy an '01 but got a 2002 RSX-S turbo instead.
+mack cummy I had one also, and felt safe at 200kmh on wide sweepers, it truly was a great handling car until it got rear ended.
+MrStoneycool69 My 1988 4WS handled so damn well.
Honda prelude the best cars on the road in the 90s, it was better than Crx model, Accord and the Honda legend, the prelude was a monster I swear, I raced a all these cars with the prelude and was successful, and includes the Ford xr3i and cosworh's.
stopped the video the second i saw the auto box, thinking: "right, this woman doesn't know what she's doing" and then moved on to the next video.
not leaving a dislike though cause that would be just plain rude
The VTEC engine on this car was a revvy little thing. Quite fun to drive. I only ever drove the manual version - I hear the automatic isn't bad(but prone to reliability problems after awhile). Yeah, I think some versions had all wheel steering.
My frist car!! This car used to be the shit back in high school.
I'm thinking of getting one in near future, would you recommend it? :)
***** As your first car? Its a great beginners car, its not super fast, very reliable (Depends on the previous owners record) I do recommend it or a used Civic Si is a good alternative too.
Wade H Alright I see, thanks :D
+Wade H what about an 89 prelude si
brandon neil Never driven one..Can't give you a honest opinion.
Im confused, British accent but shes driving an auto??? I dont see any comments from people from the UK bashing that
had that auto box on an accord I had, one of ths smoothest changeing boxs iv ever felt. but the manual option was abit pointless, just never really used it. nice to have but I used to have to remind myself it was there in the end.
what's a prowlude?
+Daniel Moreno I was thinking the same thing, does she have a speech impediment? Every time she says it I laugh.
Daniel Moreno what's a Coupay?
Daniel Moreno. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 hahaha
Coupay lmao
Prowlude - sorude
such a shame Honda ended the prelude...waiting for a reboot
6ft and can fit in the back? yea, maybe with the front seat up to the dashboard. MAYBE
Had a '99 5 speed . Loved that freakin car !!!
I know that SUVs are selling like crazy nowadays, but I'd love to see a 2020 Prelude. (and an S2000).
I don't. I prefer two historic cars than what everybody else is having
They would have to call S2020. lol.
Its coming in crpssover suv form
This was the fun car for those of us who couldn't afford the insurance of a WRX or transam
Anyone know where I can get that seatbelt guide as shown at 1:55? I really don't like the seatbelts scratching the B-pillar panels.
It has 200hp in the manual here in North America.
mack cummy Japanese type s version has 220bhp
I know that.
mack cummy I have a 197 bhp version called Motegi, it also has sideskirts and a lip on the front makes it look allot nicer.
why does their prelude have an off road package?
Lol
The worse thing about Honda now isn't Honda; it's that so many have caught up with them and Honda and everyone else finds it harder to separate themselves. Technology has become much more close knit and harder to differentiate. I must admit the last word in that last sentence wouldn't have been possible without spell check. At least not for a while. WoW....I just had a Spicoli flashback.
yo that gear column wow nice
I love how I got a Honda ad on this video. XD.
There's a base version and steel wheels with 160hp?
The Only 1 they ever made
Honda Praylowde
honda wtf happened guys
Have u seen the new civic type R bro
+Nolan Ngo yeah....it's horrifying
the back is ugly but 305 hp ill take it.
bud morse
That girl have no teeth, but her BJ is awesome...
i always loved the prelude
wanted one as a young man but decided to stay with bmw
now im driving a civic ej6... well close enough
This lady is driving the automatic? Instantly ruins all of her credibility.
I have an automatic and its amazing so kindly stfu if your a car enthusiast you should be able to respect any kind of car for what it is.
Dan Staz Um, no I should really not respect it. To any car enthusiast, automatic gearboxes are a tragedy. You are a lot less involved while driving an automatic. The only time a non-manual car is okay is when it's something like the GT-R or any car with a double clutch transmission. I respect that it's faster than a Honda Civic, but I'd rather have a manual Civic (EX really) than an automatic Prelude any day of the week.
Corin Rowe I used to own an auto 5th gen prelude prior to purchasing a 5 speed 5th gen prelude, and I can say from personal experience the automatic tranny in these is beyond horrible. Honda even added a warranty for 99-01s with under 100k miles. It is pretty much a guarantee that the auto tranny with break and fail, not to mention it is nearly 2 whole seconds slower to 60 mph in comparison to the manual version. If you own an auto 5th gen prelude you REALLY need to go do your research. You will find that a 5 speed swap is the only only option other than selling the car. Check out preludepower.com there are several threads on there that cover the autotragic tranny in great detail.
Dan Staz You definitely did not do your research prior to purchasing. I made this same mistake years ago, check out the prelude forums and you will see why that auto tranny is hated by everyone. It really does ruin the car completely, have you ever driven a 5 speed prelude vtec? Its a truly epic experience if it is a 5 speed.
the red car she drives is not automatic, it is the jdm type s, which only came in 5 speed and came with the most powerful prelude motor that has 220 hp
Hondas are very safe too.
Wow that’s some funky pronunciation, I can kinda get ImpreT-Za, Hond-eR, Jag-U-ar, but Prrwa-lude is just ridiculous
Almost had one back in the day...😢
I like the blue one near the beginning.
Had a rare pearl white manual with leather nice
A Honda Prell Yude
I just bought one used for 1900 Bucks! its in great shape only one problem....bad piston rings i really don't want to see it go to the scrap heap :(
I will definitely buy a coopay. Thanks lady.
😂
1996 was the better car :)
I had to retire my '97 Lude 5 years ago 😭 😭 😭 😭
Does anybody have the review from motor trend from 1997 please help I can't find it
Wow Ginny has aged so well in her new videos, still a great looking car!
There were 200 here in Canada.
Luckily I have a manual!!! Loads of fun.
God I miss mine.
It's VTEC not VTECH lol Vtech is a phone company
Ad Badditude V-TECH is for fast phone calls
Powerful VTEC punch, in an AUTOMATIC
A sportier accord with 2 doors
I love prelude only which have H22A
pfft here in Canada all 5th gen Preludes has allow wheels and VTEC.
I was going ot get an 01 Prelude in a nice blue but got a turbo RSX-S instead. The Prelude is pretty good but like my RSX more.
Is go with it too if it came boosted already
What?
mack cummy The 'lude handles better though with double wishbones all 'round.
Yes I used to have an 1988 Prelude and liked the wishbones.
Like how the girl is dressed to drive this type of car tough!
Variable valve timing with lift and electronic control*
Another example of design Involution. Predecessor looked better
That man is lying. He says people could not get a children in the back of the 4th gen prelude. I had a 4th gen prelude and I could fit normal sized adults pretty well
Drove great for as far i know, but the nose... Lets be honest, the Integra of this generation had such a nicer face ;)
She says it like Prawl-ude, like i know its probably her accent, but like its Pre-Luuuude.
+brendan2jz not in the UK it's not. We say prel yude
i saw yesterday some 5th gen . nice wheels and lowered. what a car! best looking car ever for the money . except 4th gen ofcourse
But most importantly *VTEC BABE* MAAAAAAAAAAAA
2:00 WTF is that? That is the shittiest parking lot I've ever seen
"Honda Pralude"
Once you pop that Bonet up you see that mighty VTech 4 cylinder engine
NOTE: don't get the automatic transmission on the prelude
SAMAWY سماوي I got a auto one for a first car cuz nobody in my family tought me how to drive manual saldy
Lol her syllable separation on Prelude is hilarious. She is saying "Prel-ude" instead of "Pre-lude". It's not because she's British either, that's just wrong.
it's pronounced 'prell-yood' and even the Japanese katakana spelling is pronounced this way- although with their own way of voicing vowels (that shouldn't be their because of restrictions/conventions with their language when spelling foreign words) so it sounds like 'pureriyuudo' with the U and the I sounds whispered and almost muted... it's always jarring to hear people pronounce it 'pree-lood' or worse 'pruh-lood'. If you watch the 3rd gen Prelude adverts from Japan they are voiced over with American English and the guy even pronounces it 'prell-yood', I expected him to say 'pree-lood'. each to their own I suppose ;-)
I love reading the comments section and play spot the American 😀
Coupé?
"Prel, ude. " love you Brits.
Coup-pe, prowlude oh lord!
To be fair what coupe in that era was " the one your mother warned you about"
Probably the 1st Gen Viper, because that thing was a death trap that would kill you if your driving skills weren’t God-Tier
#preludenation
Shame she can't say prelude.
You guys pronounced coupé wrong, you are supposed to pronounce like you are underwater.
I was expecting a hamster.
I wonder if it's possible to adapt an AWD system from an old CRX onto one of these?
i was thinking the rwd set up from an s2000 would be serious fun
Its been done before look it up, with a k20 swap prelude
SO basicaly, if you're quite suicidal you buy a Volvo? But seriously that marketing BS for Volvos was getting old even then.
Artık bu güzellik te bir araç üretimi yapılmıyor maalesef yok artık bitti
i cant stand this women car reviews! Its like a man would speak about nail painting..... variable valve timing technology.......omg i fell of the chair...........
gabrielwhite there are a handful of women that truly understand car technology, and enjoy driving equally, but they are a rare breed
If four wheel steering "was" so great, why don't they still use it?
BrewBlaster its not that great at all. Its just one more thing to break really.
@@andyschroeyers2614 Ran my Vti for nearly 15 years, and I still miss the parallel parking benefits and amazing turning circle that it offered. I don't believe it made much difference at speed.
...and it never broke!
Honda has as many highly rated cars as Volvo.
Ginny. Was a babe then and she's a babe now.
@BBAllianceTB best in the honda market!. #PRELUDENATION #BBAlliance
it,s prelude and you need a 5 speed
Look at a 4th Gen Prelude and tell me that looks better than this
It does by a long shot. And it’s a better car that was developed when they developed the NSX. 4th Gen VTEC front end looks WAY better and it’s the one that was raced. Most have NOT driven a 4th Gen VTEC so they don’t know. They made a small amount each year. 5th was a good car but more refined to try and sell to more people including middle aged wives as a daily driver. 4th Gen VTEC 94-96 was the best Honda ever -I’ll even take it over the s2000, which is a great fun car. But the feel of the 94-96 lude is special.
@@jonandrewleon Dude, I just don't like how it looks. No need to write a book about it
The Fucqs ‘Coooopey’’???🧑🏻💻 It’s Coupe! Geez
Nearly every line in this review is plagiarised from Jeremy Clarkson's earlier work.
It needs a lip kit and to be lowered.
mack cummy that's how you ruin the car and make it impossible to find a decent looking one
No it doesn't
+mack cummy Yes it does. Stock Preludes are the real gems. Nobody wants to buy someone else's ricer crap.
they are hardly available anymore, unless they have a decal, lip, dropped to the point where everything underneath the car is destroyed and have a stupid muffler on it making unnecessary noise
Yes I hate how little punks are fucking ruining imports. I got my RSX back when it was too expensive for little punks to afford but now I see little shits in them and my car feels a bit less special.
The Dealership guy on weight saving, "The engine, we've put silicone into it, so it's a stronger stiffer metal but lighter"
you know silicon and magnesium are frequently incorporated into higher end alloys, right? you can even get graphite to form in cast irons by adding silicon.
Interesting, I was unaware of this.
very sexy looking car, nice lines but hard to see in this poor footage
Thanks Honda for the shitty tip tronic transmission , I'm on my 3rd transmission now !!!! 1997 with 187Km on the body
I know what you mean! I swap a manual gearbox
