Molly Ringwald called it best when she said Andie and Duckie wouldn't work because despite Duckie's crush on Andie, they really had a much more big sister/little brother vibe. Blane may have been plain but as a romantic love interest, Andrew McCarthy played better. Would Andie and Blane have gone onto a long happily ever after together, I'm not sure I'd put money on it but I'd give better odds that Andie and Duckie would be more likely to remain friends over time - without ever having a romance between them.
nice directorial choice to include the smiths poster at the end. Morissey was always the obvious heartthrob character that didn't realise he was gay (if we're being charitable), just like duckie
