      There's no way I'll do an in-shop rebuild on a modern engine; I'll get a reman with a good warranty first. You need to send the block & head(s) to a machine shop to get checked out, and heaven help you if you pay for the disassembly only to find out that the cylinder walls are trashed

      @@williamegler8771 Also goes for similar priced German models... parts are just always more expensive, just look at the prices for a Golf or a Mini compared to equivalent models from Japan... parts are usually twice the price AND German cars are harder to work on so more hours.

    It's really great to see that as well as the diagnosis skills Jonny has the ability to strip down and rebuild engines in shop, a lot of shops just want to be parts exchangers and only fit complete engines rather than carry out a full rebuild themselves. Excellent work from you Jonny, great skill set, well done Ninja.

    • @odie0815
      @odie0815 3 месяца назад +1

      true - but those engines had a problem with oil return holes for the oil srape ring being too small from facorty
      those would collect oil crud and lock up - what causes the piston ring to no longer function propperly and result in the really high oil consumption
      VW revised the engine after the problem became apperant - but it will happen to any early model engine sooner or later
      the longlife oil change intervals additionally hasten the process

      Good question

    • @odie0815
      @odie0815 3 месяца назад +3

      yes - trim the ends
      when you fit the ring into the cylinder bore you need to have a certain gap (for expansion under heat),
      when the ring is on the upper side of the tolerance the gap my be to small and you would have exorbitant wear and could ruin the cylinder bore by digging into it
      - so you widen the gap to bring it into spec when fitted in the cylinder

      It's not that they can't rebuild the motors... it's that after the price for the new parts and then the labor of doing the whole rebuild, you'd be better off just buying another motor out of a wrecked car and calling it a day. Most folks don't want a car for 20 years and 300,000 miles, just get them further down the road and they'll dump it later.
