Hey Clay. I’ve been trading for 6 months now and just last Friday it was my first time shorting a stock. Realized that in order to make a living off trading that I would need to learn how to play be both bullish and bearish. Great videos!

I use to only invest in mutual funds but then started studying trading stocks in 2016 and opened my first trading account in 2018. Learning how to short was icing on the cake, lol! I love how clean and simple your trading platform looks vs Think or swim, Yours has everything you need at just the right size in the perfect spots on the screen whilst Think or swim is either cramped and jampacked with too many things, no easy navigation or way to just purchase stocks like you can on light speed. Definately the most frustrating thing about being a new trader is the platforms we have to try and learn how to use.
Beginner here, I'm learning and instead of buying. I sold 90 shares by mistake instead of hitting buy I saw it loosing and then bought it and turn a profit. Didn't know how I did it till i just saw it -90 in my position??? so I bought it and made a few bucks. Until now didn't know that this was SHORTING. Great video and thanks for the loss(few bucks) on teaching us thumbs up.
I really needed this video, as I couldn't get my head around the procedure to follow, to short a stock. This has clarified what I needed to learn, (after watching many of your live trades where you make a killing on shorting stocks). Keep up the great work, Clay. :)
Thank you so much! You have a great sense of humor. Very fun to watch. My first short video. You did a great job explaining. I understand it perfectly. Liked, and subscribed 👍😁
@Clay. Great training. It was awesome to get to see it LIVE with a real trade that went wrong! Everyone else does replays on sims and they ways go how they're supposed to. Great job on showing how shorting could blow an account up if it went parabolic. Thanks again
😂 he did not expect that turn out. His voice started to crack 🤣. But like I was taught, keep emotions out of it. Sorry to see, bud. Your videos are 👌👌👌👍🏽🙏
I wannt to start trading and you are literally the only Person, that was able to explain to me how the hell shorting works. Your content is literally Gold. Thank you very much.
I learned a lot from this video! Thank you. I’m learning about shorting stock and yet haven’t seen it put in action until watching this vid. You explained it very well and it was entertaining at the same time hearing you as the price went up and then when you hit BUY, to see the stock keep heading down! LOL! But hey....that’s how it goes and is as real as it gets, so thank you again!!! Question though: since you exit point was at $4.??...does that mean you really lost $40.?? since you borrowed/sold 10 shares? Thanks in advance for the answer...if you see this!
He lost 49 cents a share. For a total of 10 shares. That's a total loss of $4.90. The original price of the shares was $34 and change, while he held the position the shares went up 49 cents. Each. So that meant he lost 49 cents each. For a total of 10 shares. Equals $4.90
You could have spent one minute at the beginning of the video explaining to the people that when you short you borrow first then you sell and wait for the price to drop then you buy again and return what you borrowed. Otherwise you are confusing people.
Agreed...I wasn't sure if Clay was already holding the stock, if you can put a negative order in, or what the hell was going on. I get that shorting means when the stock falls, you gain money because you've set a certain level you want to sell at...but doesn't that also depend on the ask? As much as I get stock goes up, shorting makes money go down, stock goes down, shorting makes money go up...very fundamental, but 0 detail on where, when and how that all works based on what you started with.
I used to think shorting was defined as what you thought it was, ha! Although I knew what shorting was before getting here, I had no idea that this type of action is what defined the word. I researched the word and was brought here. Thank you.
Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed this video.. quick question though, did you lose 4.90 per share? Or just 4.90 overall? Also, what trading platform are you using? Thanks clay!
How would u get out of this if u did this kind of mistake would u keep on losing money or is there a way to get out of this and can u buy and sell at the same time ur shorting
Okay, I have never shorted but I got it a "short" time after you first explained it. You didn't have to go on and on. It seemed like my trading or investing. I buy something long and it goes down and down. Thanks
Thanks! Just did my first yesterday was in the green for about 2 min ten reversed!! I swear when I think a stock goes up with money on the line it goes down and vise versa… my luck.. appreciate your explanation
@13:28 I've been trying to figure out how to close a short position. I thought once you sell the shares when the stock plunges, you're done. I didn't realize that's just the beginning ,and the gains/losses will continue to be calculated until you click to buy the shares. My original understanding made me so confused. I couldn't figure out how people could possibly lose money, but now I get it. You're totally awesome for sacrificing money to show us this demonstration! Thank you!! 😁
this was deff the first time i heard of shorting to me i thought it was selling put options had no idea you could sell stocks without owning them this explain a lot to me for the past year i been thinking it was something else completely
I finally get it. I was totally lost, and was mystified on how you could make money on a stock going down. Thanks Clay, been watching your videos all week.
I've know what shorting is, and have for a long time. What I didn't know was how to execute it, so I've never done it. I remember a few times poking around my platform looking for the "short" option, but I never figured it out. Thanks for the info.
I enjoyed watching you, great content, it's the right video I'm looking for on how to sell or buy when the stock I'm shorting goes the opposite way. I didn't know it was that expensive in shorting stocks. Anyway great job.
I don't want to say this was a great video in the sense of how you presented over all... but my goodness SHORTING is SO EASY... I've been trading for two years and no one explained it, and no wonder, you can just as easily make money Shorting as doign a regular Swing or Day trade. All about doing your research and understanding which way it is going.
Thank YOU!!! This is the best live video for shorting I have seen and I have been looking, some videos out there do not explain as clear as you. Great Teacher. I am starting in this world and this video was very helpful.
I went short accidently on a position on TD this morning, luckily it wasn't for much. Thank you for explaining, I will use this as a teaching lesson. Though I'm losing money at the moment, I can see the allure of this.
Wow that was a great live sample of shorting , you're expecting to go Down but it goes Up so it showing your losing your bet but at the end the stock went down a little bit and you're losses shrink a little bit. Now I do understand how short selling works. Great live show. 👍
Hello Claytrader. If you go short? Will the final profit that you gained when you closed (bought) a deal on shorting, the same? Or will there be deductions in the future for borrowing the said shares? Like if I gained $200 from shorting, will I really get that $200 or will anything in that $200 dollars be deducted? Thank you if you will answer. I have been watching you since 2015 when I wanted to learn how to trade in the stock market when I was in High school. You're the realest in the game of content creation when it comes to the stock market.
OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO I HAve BEEN LOOKING AND LOOKING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I got myself into lol none explained like you did! I understand! I am grateful!! 🙏
thank you for this GREAT information and laughs, I have been looking for a video like this! mostly everyone just shows you the TA of when to enter or exit a short trade, so thank you for just showing the process!
If I put a stop loss in place how likely is it, that the position won't be covered? Also when does interest and margin become a factor and out weigh gains? How do I determine a "hard to borrow" vs "easy to borrow". Great video, and thx
You'll be able to "get out" with a stop loss. Just need to be careful of "slippage", which I talk about here: claytrader.com/videos/trading-101-what-is-trade-slippage-beginners-beware/
Ty Clay. This helped me a lot. One quick question. Do I hit the BUY button to sell or the BUY TO COVER option. I have SELL, BUY, SELL SHORT and BUY TO COVER. ty ty great info
So you basically 'sell' even though you have 0 shares of a stock? that's how you short? What about the "S" version of stocks like the SQQQ, would buying into that be considered shorting as well? Thanks in advance!
thank you so much for showing what can happen. Even though its not a huge loss it was so informational thank you for not being to proud to show this. This was my first video about shorting and am i am glad that you are a honest youtuber. Thank you
Hey Clay, very new to the market here. Super interested in learning tons more, I just wanted ask you what trading platform were you using there? It's my first time seeing a short trade being executed, I appreciate the video so much brother!
Could you please do more videos on how to short a stock? For beginners like me and others. It would a lot. I appreciate it. Thank you for all efforts Clay god bless
Great video Clay - question - so u shorted with 10 stocks that means I can practice with 1 (one) until I get comfy to increase the quantity. Most videos that I have seen they have 100 stocks (Shorts vs Options). Thanks again!
Questions please: 1. When you "buy back" the shares, do you now own then and have to sell them again to actually cash out? 2. Do you get charged fees on TDA while you're waiting for the stock to drop? 3. How long do you have before you have to buy back the shares?
This is the first video of yours I have watched so forgive me if this has been covered, but what platform do you use and what would you recommend for someone starting out? I’m an engineer and work in finance so It’s not that I’m not intelligent, but I’m certainly a beginner as it relates to short selling. This video was great. There are a lot out there, but showing the execution of a trade was much needed.
Hi Clay, in order to let the platform KNOW that you want to short a stock, do you have to set the price lower than the current price & hit sell button? Then when the price comes down to that specified price...the platform will automatically sell your shares & put you at a negative position? Great video, just not clear on how the platform KNEW that you were shorting it. Any comment form you or the ppl on the thread is much appreciated. Thanks
Climbi the mountain Ride the slide Sometimes that green trade appears as a series of steps which can be up to 5 steps and if your lucky it goes to 7 ish steps eg increments then it usually levels out and goes down but occasionally it can be more than 7 steps in a row

I enjoyed watching you, great content, it's the right video I'm looking for on how to sell or buy when the stock I'm shorting goes the opposite way. I didn't know it was that expensive in shorting stocks. Anyway great job.
Glad it was helpful!
I am crying with laughter. This is the best educational video I have seen in ages. I learnt so much more than shorting. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank YOU!!! This is the best live video for shorting I have seen and I have been looking, some videos out there do not explain as clear as you. Great Teacher. I am starting in this world and this video was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I went short accidently on a position on TD this morning, luckily it wasn't for much. Thank you for explaining, I will use this as a teaching lesson. Though I'm losing money at the moment, I can see the allure of this.
Glad it helped!
Wow that was a great live sample of shorting , you're expecting to go Down but it goes Up so it showing your losing your bet but at the end the stock went down a little bit and you're losses shrink a little bit. Now I do understand how short selling works. Great live show. 👍
I got in randomly. I wasn't expecting anything. I entered the trade simply for the sake of the video.
thank you very much , i couldn't understand the shorting concept even after watching many videos but this video helped me a lot so thank you again .
Glad it helped!
Thank you, now I understand how to short stocks
Great!
The video was really helpful. As a beginner day-trader do you think shorting is suitable?
Yes, assuming you have a legitimate plan/strategy.
No, it's the same.
OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO I HAve BEEN LOOKING AND LOOKING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I got myself into lol none explained like you did! I understand! I am grateful!! 🙏
Glad it helped!
Thank you Clay. You explained this perfectly.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank You. What’s the difference between CFD shorting and Stock shorting and which would you recommend more
CFD's are illegal in the USA, so I can't comment much on them as I'm not sure.
Thanks for the detailed video. Can you explain if there is a chance of liquidation if the price go too high and do you need margin for this of trade?
Yes. There is risk of margin call.
This was a great video I always wondered what shorting was I’m still new at this.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for this GREAT information and laughs, I have been looking for a video like this! mostly everyone just shows you the TA of when to enter or exit a short trade, so thank you for just showing the process!
Glad it was helpful!
the greatest video made in this market....he was very real on how things can go south.. MUCH RESPECT! I am susbscribing right away...
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks to this video I know how to short a stock but having the nerves to do it is another thing lol
Get a trade strategy you trust in.
Ty Clay. This helped me a lot. One quick question. Do I hit the BUY button to sell or the BUY TO COVER option. I have SELL, BUY, SELL SHORT and BUY TO COVER.
ty ty

Buy.
what a absolute brillant series of video,s clay makes sense of a very diffucult subject futures.thank,s mate.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So you basically 'sell' even though you have 0 shares of a stock? that's how you short? What about the "S" version of stocks like the SQQQ, would buying into that be considered shorting as well? Thanks in advance!
No, you are "buying", therefore "going long".
Man this video was amazing!!! Thank you so much for posting clay!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you so much for showing what can happen. Even though its not a huge loss it was so informational thank you for not being to proud to show this. This was my first video about shorting and am i am glad that you are a honest youtuber. Thank you

Could you please do more videos on how to short a stock? For beginners like me and others. It would a lot. I appreciate it. Thank you for all efforts Clay god bless
I'm not sue what you meant. "how" you do it is shown in his video...
Never shorted a stock and always wondered what it is like. thank you Clay Trader.
Very welcome
Great video Clay - question - so u shorted with 10 stocks that means I can practice with 1 (one) until I get comfy to increase the quantity. Most videos that I have seen they have 100 stocks (Shorts vs Options). Thanks again!
I shorted 10 *shares* on the same stock. Yes, you could do 1 share if you wanted.
which Software do you use for trading and how much does the software cost ? thanks Clay good stuff !!
Here you go claytrader.com/resources/
Respect! 🙏🙏🙏
I appreciate your $4.90 loss to drive home this short selling strategy.
Have my subscription! 🎉🎉🎉
A $4.90 well spend then! :-)
Questions please:
1. When you "buy back" the shares, do you now own then and have to sell them again to actually cash out?
2. Do you get charged fees on TDA while you're waiting for the stock to drop?
3. How long do you have before you have to buy back the shares?
This should help claytrader.com/videos/how-do-you-make-money-shorting-a-stock-ill-try-to-explain/
@@claytrader there's lots of things on the link you sent.... I don't know what I'm supposed to click on. :/
@@flippindocks8183 what? watch the video.....

Another informative video. Have you ever utilized a straddle on a stock or is that a bit too risky? Thanks in advance.
if you're interested in "talking stocks/trading in general", you are more than welcomed to join my private community - claytrader.com/team/
@ClayTrader - what trading platform do you use? is this the online broker platform you select or a seperate platform? Thanks in advance.
Here you go: claytrader.com/resources/
Hi Clay, in order to let the platform KNOW that you want to short a stock, do you have to set the price lower than the current price & hit sell button? Then when the price comes down to that specified price...the platform will automatically sell your shares & put you at a negative position? Great video, just not clear on how the platform KNEW that you were shorting it. Any comment form you or the ppl on the thread is much appreciated. Thanks
That all depends on the platform itself.
Thanks for the great tutorial, what trading software do you use?
Here ya go: claytrader.com/resources/
Nothing about having to have a margin account to short?
Depends... are you shorting via puts?
Climbi the mountain
Ride the slide
Sometimes that green trade appears as a series of steps which can be up to 5 steps and if your lucky it goes to 7 ish steps eg increments then it usually levels out and goes down but occasionally it can be more than 7 steps in a row
Thanks for the thoughts.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge brother 🙏💯
My pleasure
