Excellent, just perfect. So sad Chris is gone. I have been a fan of Yes since the seventies and to see you play this has made me appreciate much more what Squire put in to this work. Thanks for putting this out. It was great!
This music will never be surpassed. I’ve been listening to this album for over 40 years and it still amazes me with its complexity and timelessness. That’s a beautiful bass, and very well played! Don’t ever quit your study of great music and the bass guitar. Well done!
AndreaIt absolutely warms my heart to see a young man who was born so many years after Close to the Edge was released, play a composition that requires attention to detail and style done by a master. You've got all of the attack nuances down to a tee and understand Chris Squire's style intimately. I was probably about your age or slightly younger when Yes released this album. I am now 58 years old. I remember getting it as Christmas gift from a high school friend. We put the album on and 6 minutes into the song Close to the Edge I was transfixed and by the end of And You and I was transformed forever by this album. It truly changed my life musically. I certainly heard Yes before and was already a fan but this was a cathartic moment. I still get chills al through-out this album even when I listen to it all these many, many years later. You are gifted young man and I happy for you and happy to hear that there are those much younger than a lot of us who still appreciate and understand good music and why it's made and always remembered. One quick question, do you down load the sheet music to learn Squire's bass line in "The Solid Time of Change"? I never tried to play the track before on my bass but I always just assumed it was basically a 2 bar 6/4 pattern repeated over and over again. I downloaded the sheet music and was astounded by all the chromatic finger gymnastics that really were involved.sincerely Dougs
+Douglas Fix thank you Douglas, the reason why I post videos of myself playing is to entertain you all and to be so overwhelmed when such nice comments come my way! I'm really flattered and also fascinated invisioning yourself listening to the album and being forever changed when it came out. With regards to the sheet, no I didn't, all I did was slowing down the track on VLC and try to match note per note the ostinato on "the solid time of change". Certainly something you wouldn't have been able to do in the 70s!
..well that still took time and diligence to do that. Yes, in the '70's vinyl days of lore, the best I could do sometimes was to slow the 33-1/3 down to 16 rpms which made Chris Squire's bass sound like some giant Tyrannosaurus Rex rubber band from hell; which was usually followed by one of my parents (usually my father) opening my bedroom door and going "Doug, turn that damn thing down or off!!"
@@blueberryurl Blueberry and Douglas: Great playing, sir. Really great. Bear in mind some of us were able to cop the Solid Time of Change bass line at a full 33 1/3 RPM just using our ears back in 1972. That's all we had. And we walked to school barefoot everyday in the snow, uphill both directions. (I'm 68 now and still playing both my Rickenbacker 4001 and my 5-string Pedulla.) I was 16 when Close to the Edge was released (9/8/72), with my 4001 in-hand. At that point I had all of Fragile tucked under my belt... he uttered modestly. Now, I have arthritis in my right thumb to the extent I can no longer hold a pick very well. Kinda sad and frustrating. Carry onward, sirs.
I first heard this song 40 years ago (never get tired of it). Excellent bass playing!! Squire would be proud!! Thanks for sharing and keep that bass humming.
So very very nice to hear you play this....I'm 50+ and have been hoping young folks will embrace...and you have. Very nice job. Very very nice job. Excellent coverage of an amazing bass player.
Chris Squire was a fucking genious and youtube stuff like this give us a whole new perspective of how genious can sound a rickenbacker bass with sprinkingly fresh strings and a humble driver. You made the shit pal, very impressive. Thanks very much for the upload. Good taste!
Hi, I´m having a great time learning this by watching you play. After watching several people play it, I´ve now decided to learn it from your video. It´s the best and clearest version I´ve found. Some parts of this tune are seriously tricky ! and your video is a great tool to see what Squire´s up to. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your hard work with others.
I was searching for Chris Squire isolated bass tracks, but this is awesome. Great job! Nice to see how Squire got those incredible sounds. They never show him playing enough in live videos.
Excellent! Well played. Have enjoyed this since 1973!!! Play it many times on my 4001 and 4003! Way to go, kid! Classic stuff.Seen Chris Squire (RIP) perform it in concert many times from 1977 to 2002 in many states! Never will be old!
Love the Rickenbacher!! Thank God YES music is still be appreciated and played. Its too insanely good to be forgotten. Keep playing it because this generation needs to be exposed to real rock music. Not the pop crap rammed down our throats on every radio station.
Dude you just covered an 18 minute song by one of the greatest bass players that walked our planet. My God. I need to learn this on the bass! Inspiring and impressive! I thought I was the only millennial who would have this much admiration towards YES. Thank you for making my day.
great job! You played with the gravitas the music needs, and unleashed that monster metallic Rick sound, but only for good. You played and the tune expressed itself in and through you. In the end all is reconciled, and you conveyed that very well.
Thank you! I really enjoyed this - played it all the way through while washing up dishes & readying my dinner, like I’d listen to this record normally. I like that you don’t play exactly like Chris, but you’re true to his music at the same time. That’s a beautiful looking & sounding Rick bass, and you do it justice. Well done!!
absolutely fantastic. Your tone is spot on, too! After playing for over 35 years, this is the one song I just don't have the patience to learn, even though I've got the actual tab and it's one of my favorite Yes pieces! Very, very nice job.
I play a bit bass as an old amateur. Although a great Yes fans since 45 years, I never tried to play this. Now I know I never will and why. Great great performance and it's great to see it done so perfectly. I will try some parts of it with the help of this video !!
fantastic sound Rodhaus, I own 2 ricks, 1 of them is the 4001 Chris squire limited, you have a FANTASTIC sound! THE CS's sound,if you need un upgrade, get the malekko b-ass master fuzz,( a brassmaster maestro replica, the one used by Chris) then with the rock-o-sound send 1 signal to a clean ch; and the other one thru the fuzz pedal, you gonna love it!! anyway the sound you get is AMAZING, congratulations again, sansamp is GREAT.
Andrea your 4003 sounds PERFECT! I bought the Sansamp bass driver v2, because of your video! lol, your fault Man! I love it! I really love the bass driver DI! thank you Andrea.the "drive" control gives you THE sound...is amazing!! now I need to check WHERE to place the bassmaster fuzz..before or after the sansamp..or in parallel.. I can't use the real amplifier at home.. :-( i LOVE the sansamp!
Fantastic piece of music, fantastic bass line. Love your cover too ! to me Chris reinvented the work of bass players. Happy to see that young and talented musicians got the lessons. Keep on playing the bass guy !
VERY GOOD! I only wish that I was That young to start over Knowing as you do know. I'm 64 and played for many years but didn't hear Chris until I stopped playing. Carry on, Son
Chris Squire and Bill Bruford linking up the way they did will never be surpassed. I’m sure you’ve heard it, but if not check out Lucky Seven on Chris Squire’s solo album. More beautiful bass/drums interaction.
Never let them forget . . . scribe it in rock ,seal the vinyl, or there will be no proof of my generations true creativity & genius! “ The truth is written all along the Page “ !
Note perfect...Chris would be proud...
Young people still attracted to the music I was lucky enough to see performed live by Yes in the '70s. Great work, sir!
I was born in the 80's, but still think about what could it be to see them perform live those years.
Excellent, just perfect. So sad Chris is gone. I have been a fan of Yes since the seventies and to see you play this has made me appreciate much more what Squire put in to this work. Thanks for putting this out. It was great!
Thank you so much, very much appreciated comment!
Nobody lives forever; his music will ....
Never in my life did I expect such dedication to this music from future generations. EXCELLENT JOB!!! 🎸
This music will never be surpassed. I’ve been listening to this album for over 40 years and it still amazes me with its complexity and timelessness. That’s a beautiful bass, and very well played! Don’t ever quit your study of great music and the bass guitar. Well done!
Thanks man, very much appreciated!
You put into words exactly my thoughts!
I marvel that human beings created this music. Its that good.
