    RM,
    Good to see you back! I was a woodworker for forty years before I got into metal. I built a ton of fine furniture and reproduction antiques for many satisfied customers over the years. At the end of my woodworking career I got involved with antique dealers here in the Midwest United States. They would buy the antiques at auctions which are prevalent here , drop them off at my shop and expect me to perform miracles on the junk they dumped off then didn’t want to pay what my “miracle work” accomplished! To be honest, trying to satisfy antique dealers at minimal cost to them only to see the prices they charged in their shops literally burned me out. I used to collect old boards of any variety just so I could match antique pieces and ended up with a barn full before I called it quits. The very last straw for me was an antique dealer I had worked with extensively brought me an ornate red oak fireplace with intricate carvings that had been in a house fire. She expected me to bring this charred piece back to its former glory. I tried, believe me, I tried but not measure of effort would bring back that piece! I kept that fireplace for over a year, all the while listening to this woman bitching about the time it was taking knowing full well she wasn’t going to come close to paying me for the time I had spent on it. The most convenient thing did happen, however. I was set to move to a new location when my shop caught fire and annihilated everything in it including that stupid previously fire damaged mantle. Yes, I lost some tools and all those antique boards but I was happy. True to form the lady threatened to sue me for the loss of her fireplace mantle. I let her go on with it. When push came to shove I had my documented time recorded and my labor cost exceeded her estimated value of the piece. She dropped the suit.
    As for your bowl blanks. I did a lot of turning. Collecting blanks as you have done. I tried just about everything to dry them out properly. Paint and water submersion as you have done here. Dipping in hot wax to seal the blank. From my experience the “only” thing that really worked was submerging the blanks in polyethylene glycol for six months or more, then letting the blank dry for a few days before turning. Sometimes I still had failures but this system worked the best for me. Polyethylene Glycol you ask? Automotive antifreeze. Simple and relatively cheap.

    Good to see you back making videos.
    The spur drive you showed at the start may be able to be modified, if it is not hardened. If not hardened, drill a hole for a pin. My spur drive came with a pin. I drill a hole for the pin so the pin prevents the work coming off the spur drive. The spurs can spin if I get a catch, but then I just re-tighten the tailstock to get a new grip.
    The short Morse taper looks good.
    I have not turned plumb wood. I am interested how this looks. I have turned dried pear wood. That was not easy to turn when dry.
    Dave.

    Nice job on the Morse Taper. That is a great way to set the angle.
    I think you may have a problem with those taps. Once you use the Taper tap the Intermediate and Bottoming tap should spin in and just clean out the bottom of the hole. Yours still seem to be cutting at the beginning of the thread with taps 2 and 3.
    I don’t bother with those tap followers. I just put a pice of 12mm with a point turned on it in a drill chuck and wind the tail stock in as I go. Keeps a nice amount of pressure on the tap to keep it square.
    I have a wood lathe that I don’t really know how to use. Looking forward to learning something :)

    • @Rolingmetal
      @Rolingmetal  4 года назад

      I use some all-threat to move dies onto the workpiece. I never tried to turn points on them. I guess that's a good idea to try :) Don't expect much from my woodturning, have no done it in years and a was a novice at best :)

    • @DavoShed
      @DavoShed 4 года назад

      @@Rolingmetal I never thought of using a piece of threaded bar to guide a die onto a work piece nice and square.
      I just butt the stock up against the flat of the empty tailstock. That's a good idea.
      I was just talking about my poor man's tap follower. Same as a fancy tap follower but requires three hands sometimes to keep the pressure on the back of the tap and still manage to turn the wrench, chuck or what ever.

    Your old lathe is way better than that chinesium junk lathe. Obviously has less functionality but hey for normal turning who cares. Carbide insert tooling on either lathe is never going to work well. You should get a bunch of scrap HSS bits and grind them up. Another good one that I had never seen until the other day is the shear tool. Like a shear tool on a shaper or a planer but used on the lathe.
