    On a modern railroad, most of the carload customers have a fence with a gate. And in most cases that gate has been terribly dysfigured by a lazy conductor who did not properly secure the gate open far enough or waited until too late to open the gate in the first place. Sometimes the railroad comes out and replaces the gate. Other times the Trainmaster takes the plant manager to dinner, buys him a 40 oz steak and calls it a day. As a modeler, you can take any direction you choose. Seeing that banged up gate next to the track like that, I instantly assumed that was the direction you were going, but I still appreciate the placement and usage there. You really bring out the detail on that.
    One of the other things I notice right away about your detail is that you're not afraid of using derails. On THE railroad we have to have derails, everywhere. Even on the brickyard loading ramp which has a 6% grade going up 4 feet of elevation to the mainline. I specifically asked the FRA inspector if he could show me how a boxcar full of bricks would roll UP a 6% grade and out into the foul of the mainline. He then told me I was being smart with him and that I should just install the Derail or take a huge non-compliance fine. But one of the other aspects of derails is the type of derail and it's location. It looks like you use photos of the real thing to get your ideas for placement and that's about as accurate as you're going to get. But for those who are winging it, I'd love to see more open point derails on places where equipment could potentially roll faster than 10 mph. An open point derail is a switch basically, with switch points but no frog and no length of track extending beyond the points. While the flop-over or rail-top derails will work at slower speeds, (10mph and below) if a wheel hits those at a faster speed, they will either kick it off completely or jump right over the derail instead. But to be effective with a heavy cut of cars or a higher speed equipment, the open point ensures that whatever travels through it will leave the rails before entering and fouling the mainline.
    Any time I suggest something like that to a modeler, I often am told it would make their layout look "cluttered." To me, cluttered details make a layout more appealing! Your abandoned skiff and the derelict flotsam along the shore are details that make the layout look more real. One guy was modeling one of our railroad customers and he mentioned that the service road going back into the plant seemed to have a lot of trash where people dumped their garbage. The service road was there for us to drive the company truck down and open the gate at the conveyor, rather than having to drive all the way around the plant and in. And like any other time, the gate was assaulted by some negligent employee or train crew. But the dirt drive between the road and the gate was open to whoever dared try to 4-wheel it in. The tire ruts were deep enough that a short car would definitely bottom out, especially if it rained. And most of the time anyone going down this road would stop once they felt like they were out of sight of the road, leaving their garbage between the driveway and the tracks, where oak scrub naturally existed.
    Well, this modeler took it upon himself to model this spur, not nearly as long or as wide a radius. But the attention to detail that he applied absolutely amazed me. Between the oak scrub, the ruts in he road that were filled with standing water in some places, the fence and gate, and of course the 60-80 yards worth of household garbage scattered between the trees. He even went so far as to add a homeless guy with a momma dog and her puppies hanging out at an old dome tent under the short tree canopy right at the fence line. That was some serious attention to detail and I loved it!
    Anyhow off my tangent here, keep up the good work and I look forward to your future content!

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Год назад +3

      I appreciate the insights you share. The beauty of building a layout like this, at your own pace, is revisiting scenes over-and-over again while adding little details like this. I never show things chronologically because model railroads never get built this way. It's nice to know people understand the process the way you describe the real world. I plan to revisit this location often. I mean I haven't even added the Ferry, Barge, Skiff, etc. yet. ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

    • @BrooksMoses
      @BrooksMoses Год назад +1

      Thinking about the "too cluttered" comment: I was reading Lance Mindheim's "Model Railroading as Art" book a couple of days ago (I think that was something Boomer recommended; if so, thank you!) and one of the points he made is that a lot of model railroads have the buildings and industries packed in too tightly, so there's too much going on in one place. That seems related -- if you're trying to tell too many stories in one place, you don't have room to tell any of them in depth. Whereas if you leave enough room for things to spread out a bit, you can tell some very detailed stories, like what Boomer has done here by using several feet of track just for the one sidingless warehouse and the barge slip.

You would never see the barbs in Ho scale much like you would never see rivets on an N scale boxcar. I call these “expected” details. Like Ho wood grain , you probably wouldn’t see it but is expected. The 1/35 scale barbed wire looks great and let’s you know what it is. I love the way you model and paint. You inspire.

      That is a good analysis of my modeling philosophy. I tend to cheat scale for those reasons you describe. Some of the old classic diorama artists did this to cheat perspective, etc. like Sheperd Paine, Ray Anderson, Bob Letterman, Lewis Pruneau, and even the great John Allen was renowned for cheating scale and perspective as well. Since we transition dynamically, in-and-out, from the 1:1 world into the scale world, our mind can handle it without bias for some reason.

      I use 1/48 scale stuff as well and you can't notice unless I point it out. I believe it was Sheperd Paine who cheated (vertical) floors on buildings like this to enhance the height of a structure that wasn't really technically there.

    I have two very similar fences on my layout; one very much in the background, one semi-hidden at the back of a foreground scene. I like using details like this to pull viewers in -- the closer they get, the more there is to see. I love the addition of the chain-link gates -- they're the perfect finishing touch. I also like your point about mixing scales; I work in N scale, and sometimes it's necessary to use something that's oversized for it to show up. Chain link fence is a good example --a viewer has to be able to see the mesh in order for it to look realistic, so, yeah, bridal veil material...

    Boomer, nice job on the fence. I have a question for you. What made you decide to paint your fascia black? I Originally Staind and varnished my fascia to keep the natural wood grains of the clear wood. However the more I look it the less I likely I like it. I noticed a lot of private layouts and clubs. Paint their fascia black or olive green. Do you have any suggestions. And why you chose black.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Год назад +2

      Actually, my Fascia is not black. It looks black from certain angles on social media depending on the studio lighting. The fascia is dark olive green. Here is the color: BEHR - (Base 2300 - N410-7) ~ North Woods.
      I find the darker facia (in this case), enhances the layout color theme and doesn't distract from the viewing experience. Cheers.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Год назад +1

      I have built untold ship models out of wood, in larger scales, and it works excellent. On the other hand, I can simulate wood, metal, stone, or any other substance with plastic in most cases. Plastic is also tougher than wood when it comes to most miniatures in my experience. For adhesive I like to use solvent instead of wood glue or CA. I also like to scribe wood effects into plastic because natural wood grain does not translate well into smaller scales like plastic does when you distress it. Plastic also takes paint and washes well where it does not get absorbed like a piece of wood will do, etc. Cheers.

I use the Paasche Talon for scenery because it has a big sealed cup.

    Boomer, you receive so many comments from your many thousands of followers, that I have trouble coming up with something original that hasn't already been said. Be that as it may, I've taken to heart and put into practice the techniques and lessons I've learned from you the past few years. I get a newsletter every Sunday devoted to a particular topic, and yesterday's was on art. There were some great quotes in it, and I selected three that I thought would resonate with you. Here they are. "The secret of a successful artist," an old instructor had told her years ago,
    "is not just to put paint on canvas - it is to transfer emotion, using oils and brush as a kind of nerve conduit.” ~Rod Serling, the opening words of "The Midnight Sun," in New Stories from the Twilight Zone (1962); "The primary benefit of practicing any art, whether well or badly, is that it enables one's soul to grow.” ~ Kurt Vonnegut (1999); “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” ~Thomas Merton. Thanks again for taking us along on this great journey with you. ~Brian

      I think the RUclips algorithm determines the growth of a channel in the end through (Impressions). Only so much room on peoples browsers and RUclips usually promotes trending content and not so much "niche" channels like this one.
      Personally, I try to focus on content that contributes to growing the overall skill set which helps the avid modeler to enjoy the hobby more. A model is a model to me at the end of the day, and like you say, it all pertains to the hobby in one way or another.
