There he goes again. “The salaries are obscene”. Everyone makes too much money except him. Said the same shit about engineers that create the products he could never dream of.
Engineers sure, but it’s kind of hard to watch an NBA bench player get paid tens of millions of dollars to jack up 3s. I think a solution would be to shorten the season and make zone defense illegal again (not that it’s utilized that much but before zone defense was allowed in 2003, it was illegal to rotate back to you original player after double teaming another player). I think traction for individual matchups will be easier to establish with viewers once dynamic double teams and zone defenss are gone. Then teams can draft “Lebron Stoppers “ or “Curry Stoppers” and sell individual matchups per game as part of the overall product, especially if the “stopper” can score on the other end. It will become more like the boxing match of the 90s NBA and I think grier the sense of earning a win each night. I think then it would be easier to evaluate value on the floor and thus way for audiences rationalize the amount someone is paid. Because today it’s very hard to see who’s worth the money they’re being paid outside of a few star players.
@@VonJay without zone defense, the league is on easy mode like MJ had it. You would see guys like Lebron scoring 50 just driving to the basket. Its streaming. I dont understand why everyone is ignoring this and pretending its the product on the field/court. The reality is we cant watch anymore. Sports used to be free and now theyre not. Theyre being gatekept by streaming services trying to make money off something that has been free for the entire lives of their viewer base. Then to go to a game its $60 for shit seats and 300-400 at minimum for good seats. Games are crazy expensive for the majority of Americans and its impossible to watch games without 4 different streaming services and the NBA product blackouts local markets which is most of the point of sports. Most of us follow our local team and the NBA product blocks you from watching your local team. Numbers are down because its significantly harder to watch games. Theres the story. Whoever happens to own the rights for your local team likely gets bought and sold every other year so its a new streaming service you have to deal with again and again.
Significantly harder to watch and significantly easier to follow without watching. The problem with NBA is that there isn't a next-up Mega-Star waiting to take over (post LeBron) for the first time in NBA history. Wilt took over from Russell. Kareem tookover from Wilt. And you also have the other HUGE names in that mix that were influential to drive the NBA popularity in their own unique ways too. Iverson , Shaq , Vince Carter in the early 2000s
I disagree. I think its because there are no rivalries anymore. Its entertainment, so story lines matter. Nowadays even the smallest trash talk, they eject and fine players.
Here's a take for the All-In Pod community: Basketball has always been "rigged" to some extent, caught between corporate interests and the presence of black American athletes. Remember when the league was deemed "too black" for mainstream audiences? Stern's dress code was a clear example of this tension. The NCAA even banned the dunk for 9 seasons! Now, the overemphasis on the 3-pointer, driven by questionable analytics, mirrors that past suppression of style. Where are the traditional big men, the back-to-the-basket players? The greatest scorers were often "mid-range masters." The shift towards three-pointers means even dunks are being passed up, devaluing the art of the sky-walker. If the 3-pointer hadn't been pushed so hard over the last two decades, would 30% of NBA players be international? Would there be two international athletes for every NCAA Division 1 team? This shift has arguably led to lost economic opportunities for American athletes, both in the NBA and college basketball. Thoughts?
The NBA was iconic in the late 80s and 90s for one reason. Advertising. The advertising campaign around Jordan was aimed at all Americans. Nike/Gatorade Made every kid want to be like mike. They changed course drastically with LeBron and don’t aim to capture all of America anymore. Advertising draws eyeballs and the NBA partners have let them down. NBA has been reactive with rule changes but that’s not what drives attention. I wonder what type of labor dispute arises after private equity takes all these teams over?
Here's the deal. American professional sports used to be basically free to watch on TV. Tickets to games were priced to get us regular Joe's in the stadium. Today, the NBA is overpriced and, therefore, faces declining viewership. The average price for a family of four sitting, in bad seats, at an inconsequential game, between two teams who will not be in the playoffs, is about 600 bucks after tickets, parking, and snacks. If the game is consequential, you can triple the price to 1800 bucks or even much more. Can you imagine Bluecollar Joe wanting to attend a few games per month? No. One game per month? No. One game per season? Mostly No. Also, to watch on TV requires expensive subscriptions or paywalls. Then, once you have the game up and on ...congratulations, you get to listen to 3 or 4 talking heads incessantly, blabbering thru your viewing, which is sandwiched between 45 minutes of commercial breaks for an average NBA game. It's no longer fun for the viewer. Therefore, the NBA is losing viewership. Actual regular people are just turning it off. I left a long time ago...will you?
Ratings are down because of the refs and commissioner silver. They bottle these players and make them dribbling and shooting puppets, taking all emotion out of the game. if you dunk on someone and stare them down, it's a tech...if you clap your hands, it's a tech..if you so much as get into a pushing match like Nurkic and Naz Mohammed the other day it's 3 games suspension. Make the product itself interesting and allow players to show emotion
The NBA tv ratings is decreasing due to Adam Silvers policy of taking part on politics and social issues that affected the fans. Anti Trump stand, BLM, Covid Vaccine mandate, Liberal policies etc. Popovich, Lebron, Curry talk too much with the press about social issues.
There's inherent flaws in bball that are harder to address than other sports like its refereeing problem or repetitive nature. Issues like going woke or load management don't help.
Former Warriors owner discusses NBA's viewership problem, attributing it to less interesting gameplay and unreliable rivalries due to high player compensation. He predicts declining valuations for pro sports teams as TV deals potentially shrink.
Lol, the NBA owners need PE firm (others' money) to overpay for their franchise. Cheap debt has destroyed America (assets prices). You can't cashflow or increase appreciation on investments. PE firms need GOV or pension funds to chase negative yields. So, hardworking Amercians lose their retirement to subsidize the rich.
Three biggest problems: 1) Stat padding 2) Prima-donna model 3) Overdoing the focus on offense Three fundamental solutions: 1) Highlight defense (for intensity) 2) Pay by player star rating for top 5, equitable pay for the rest 3) Stop the top 3 problems
The NBA is not entertaining, it's boring. And worse, they pedalled politics ... Politics and sports do not mix. Officiating is terrible. The league is bending to some individuals ... Which make people sick.
Yeah I think pissing off 1/3 of your potential customers isn't something that should be ignored. Like WTF did you think was going to happen when your entire league is very publicly anti-Trump? Did you think Republicans don't watch basketball? Likewise it's not a coincidence that only ESPN ratings are down from last year while TNT's are flat. Playing politics is a terrible idea for businesses but especially sports leagues
how can someone use so many big words and sound so smart, yet be so wrong? NBA viewership is down because 1) the other sports are more entertaining 2) NBA is actively shitting on half the country because of politics so of course that half will watch less NBA 3) Adam Silver is a terrible commissioner and let the NBA become too player centric at the cost of teams and the sport 4) Max contracts leave no incentive for players to perform. Exhibit A: Zion
1) Politics. It's about 1/3 or 1/4 not half but probably the biggest cause because people are less inclined to overlook things they did 20 years ago 2) Difficult to watch local games 3) More competition for eyeballs -- _everything_ is down from 10 years ago 4) No dynasties & prime age stars 5) Easy to follow league and see highlights without watching games 6) Then all the league specific perception things. Player entitlement, load management, play style, too many games, etc. Those have been issues basically since the league was founded. They aren't new. Although "too foreign" has largely replaced "too black"
The NBA is cooked. Their players don't play, the game itself has been mathmatically solved (three point shot or layup and thats it), has become much more about being "bigger than the game." Players are not set on a given franchise which disenfranchises the team fans from feeling like they are a part of the organization. The MLB, NFL, and MLS have been consistently making changes to improve the viewer experience; specifically the MLB with the pitch clock, video review, adding a salary cap, and making each league have a DH. While the other leagues of been innovating, the NBA has been focused on quite literally nothing
Depends on your finances . 1000$ in XAI211K is 4000 XAI211K if it goes to 50% of ath in 2024 thats a 600% gain. If it goes equal to ath . Its a 1200% gain.
Cant speak for others, but i watch less sports because of corruption. Stopped watching soccer completely after corruption reached EPL (MC). NBA is still less and hasnt reached outright, blatant corruption, but the "star treatment" has simply gotten out of control. Systemic double standards creates a poor product overall. Still there's hope for the NBA. The refereeing AFAICT from highlights this year (cant afford to watch live games with no investment in my obviously superior distributed protocol wink wink), the refereeing is getting better with fewer arbitrary calls. The Olympics had such good refereeing overall that it was a wakeup call for the NBA who, to their credit, are responding well. Still gotta give up the "star power". Go Spurs Go!
I think sports leagues are running the risk of taking viewers for granted. I can’t watch a full nba game as there’s so many TV breaks. NHL is starting to be more compelling as there’s less breaks. I also wonder if the monopoly that these sports leagues have will ever be questioned. Hard to know the future but I know for myself I would love a new league of any sport that makes some kind of relegation system. Would be fun.
I am holding XAI211K as well in the UK here we have a thing called capital gains tax free whereby if you purchase XAI211K then you obviously don’t have to pay Tax.
I don't think the narrative stuff is a real reason or has a significant impact compared to other factors BUT when the league ambassadors continually tell you it's a bad product... That certainly doesn't _help_
I stopped watching sports about 12 years ago for obvious reasons (for anyone thats been paying attention, not the ones living under the rock that would rather be lied to). Alot of talk in this chat about sacking, but I never heard of an NBA sack...however that's a brilliant idea💡and might just be the only thing that could bring back viewers...at least this viewer 😊
You cant lump NBA with all other sports, they have colleage football ball games with more viewship and rating as the NBA...And also generating more revenue then the english premier league soccer...At this point NBA might aswel combine with the WNBA...now that would be one for the ages.

Former Warriors owner discusses NBA's viewership problem, attributing it to less interesting gameplay and unreliable rivalries due to high player compensation. He predicts declining valuations for pro sports teams as TV deals potentially shrink.
the show is dead
Soccer will surpass basketball. Basketball is a niche sport for tall people.
Chamath is correct.
I would still want an nfl expansion team. PS this podcast needs sacks 🙏❤️🇺🇸💯
Why? So they can have more than 82 boring ass games? They need to tone down the refs and this square image that they want players to be
Did he put the dot in the wrong spot ?
which one is the former owner?
Chamath, the Sri Lankan dude
Big Tech is ruining the game of football
friggin chamaath thinks hes an expert on the nba now lolololol
LoL, what sunk the NBA was playing on their knees.
Where is Sacks!
Three biggest problems: 1) Stat padding 2) Prima-donna model 3) Overdoing the focus on offense
Three fundamental solutions: 1) Highlight defense (for intensity) 2) Pay by player star rating for top 5, equitable pay for the rest 3) Stop the top 3 problems
NBA is very boring. After Kobe retired I stopped watching. We are missing Sacks…..
Lebron literally is the problem. I’ll consider checking back in once he’s gone
For me, it was the obsession with Woke and politics that drove me away. I'm sure there are millions like me. Hockey is where it's at, cats!!
Nba is the most boring sport to watch, has always been incredibly dull
how can someone use so many big words and sound so smart, yet be so wrong?
NBA viewership is down because 1) the other sports are more entertaining 2) NBA is actively shitting on half the country because of politics so of course that half will watch less NBA 3) Adam Silver is a terrible commissioner and let the NBA become too player centric at the cost of teams and the sport 4) Max contracts leave no incentive for players to perform. Exhibit A: Zion
1) Politics. It's about 1/3 or 1/4 not half but probably the biggest cause because people are less inclined to overlook things they did 20 years ago
2) Difficult to watch local games
3) More competition for eyeballs -- _everything_ is down from 10 years ago
4) No dynasties & prime age stars
5) Easy to follow league and see highlights without watching games
6) Then all the league specific perception things. Player entitlement, load management, play style, too many games, etc. Those have been issues basically since the league was founded. They aren't new. Although "too foreign" has largely replaced "too black"
Bring back Sacks
The NBA is cooked. Their players don't play, the game itself has been mathmatically solved (three point shot or layup and thats it), has become much more about being "bigger than the game." Players are not set on a given franchise which disenfranchises the team fans from feeling like they are a part of the organization. The MLB, NFL, and MLS have been consistently making changes to improve the viewer experience; specifically the MLB with the pitch clock, video review, adding a salary cap, and making each league have a DH. While the other leagues of been innovating, the NBA has been focused on quite literally nothing
The biggest problem in NBA is tanking.
Make nba draft totally independent from the results in regular season.
What a bunch of traitors.
sports ball is for boomers lol
NBA viewership is down because of going woke
No its going soft. Players can't even say a word to each other without a technical foul
Depends on your finances . 1000$ in XAI211K is 4000 XAI211K if it goes to 50% of ath in 2024 thats a 600% gain. If it goes equal to ath . Its a 1200% gain.
Sports have sucked since the 90s.. Cheap money Fs up everything.
This XAI211K thing is going bananas 🚀
Who cares about the idiot's court side anecdote?
80% TURBO 14% XAI211K 2% FLOKI 2%BONK 2%PEPE 🎉
funds buying pro sports teams seems less fun
I think sports leagues are running the risk of taking viewers for granted. I can’t watch a full nba game as there’s so many TV breaks. NHL is starting to be more compelling as there’s less breaks.
I also wonder if the monopoly that these sports leagues have will ever be questioned. Hard to know the future but I know for myself I would love a new league of any sport that makes some kind of relegation system. Would be fun.
XAI211K is still massively undervalued
Lebron is the problem. Terrible person and rep for a major brand.
Chamath.... wait....shut up Gavin... it's about me being an owner of the Warriors.
I am holding XAI211K as well in the UK here we have a thing called capital gains tax free whereby if you purchase XAI211K then you obviously don’t have to pay Tax.
Uhhh but if Charles barkley says positive things NBA will be highest watched sport in history
I don't think the narrative stuff is a real reason or has a significant impact compared to other factors BUT when the league ambassadors continually tell you it's a bad product... That certainly doesn't _help_
Why do you guys care about pharma ads so much?
Pharma Bot detected.
75% of TV ad dollars are from pharma and there is a push to remove them. US is one of only 2 countries that allows direct marketing to consumers.
If you HOLD XAI211K XLM and ICP - IT IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!!
Sports has become too woke
I stopped watching sports about 12 years ago for obvious reasons (for anyone thats been paying attention, not the ones living under the rock that would rather be lied to). Alot of talk in this chat about sacking, but I never heard of an NBA sack...however that's a brilliant idea💡and might just be the only thing that could bring back viewers...at least this viewer 😊
👍👍
Warriors evaluation only went up because iof one man … Curry. Without him, the warriors would still be considered worthless 😂
You cant lump NBA with all other sports, they have colleage football ball games with more viewship and rating as the NBA...And also generating more revenue then the english premier league soccer...At this point NBA might aswel combine with the WNBA...now that would be one for the ages.
SUI and XAI211K is going to explode
Bro, i bought XAI211K in November after your video. i'm up 379%.
So the problem isn’t a problem at all… lol
It looks XAI211K is in right position.
First
XAI211K is the gem of 2024 it's literally owned by Elon Musk
Second
RICH GUY THINKS HE CAN OUTCOACH STEVE KERR.....that's why the NBA sucks....u in the front row instead of someone that loves ball.
First Elon bought X and now he launched the XAI211K token this year is crazy
😂😂😂 bet against 🏀 if you want 😂😂😂
You called it a month ago and now XAI211K is blowing up glad I listened
LeBron is the problem
SUI and XAI211K are my top performers. 🚀
Top news: XAI211K to the moon 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
