The passenger in the car does the navigating he has learned the course, all the turns and twists etc, he relays these to driver along the route allowing the driver to just concentrate on the driving. They have a reinforced structure inside the car to help protect them.

You can see at 3:52 how much better modern rally cars turn, driver slows down and just drifts into corner, then adjusts amount of sliding using accelerator. 7:12 Porsche 911 is rear-heavy, so when you accelerate, front lifts worsening your steering. Normally not that big issue, but that rear spoiler probably made it worse, by pushing rear more to ground, and super-wide rear tires sure didn't help, because they stabilize car. So driver turned, but there was not enough weight on front wheels, so they just slid.

That spot were you mentioned the sun's reflection, the navigator in the passenger seat should've called out the turn in the road. They would've been drifting sideways and not caught that angle of the sun on the windshield.

(because they see this section of road for the second or third time in their lives, with the first one or two passes, all the curves and jumps are recorded. As a long term spectator - you always want to have a tree between you and the cars. Even a small tree will reliably stop any car and keep you safe.
