I was a photography student and my cousin did rally driving. He asked me to take some photos of an event he was in. He told me that you get the best photos from standing in the riskiest spots. There were multiple stages, Dirt track, hill climb, forest, quarry etc. Adrenaline filled fun, but I wouldn't do it again. Don't try to photograph the quarry stages.... they kill cameras.
Back in the 80's the crowd was so crazy close that the mechanics had to remove actual fingers out of the car's parts in between stages...it was apparently a thing to try to touch a 600hp car coming towards you at 120mph. There a documentary "queen of speed" about Michelle Mouton where you see them remove a couple of fingers from the engine's cooler grid.
in germany we say: It´s only fast if you have flies on the side window! Origin: Walter Röhrl ! Fastest man in Rally Sport you should see his documentary!
You should find some Group B stuff. Back in the day, the top tier of rally drove Group B cars. These cars were, crazy light, crazy powerful and insanely fast as a result. How fast? Even the rally community realised that they were too much and banned them. Especially following a spate of fatal accidents. Therr were even Lamborghini, Porsche and Ferrari group B cars. Can you imagine doing this in something as fast as a Lamborghini? I think there's a documentary out there about them. I'll see if it's on youtube.
really funny watching you guys reaction, here in Europe were just used to rally fans being crazy . The drivers do look out for the fans, but also the sensible ones know the rally stage and stand in the right place, knowing which side of the apex the car will take on the corners. Greets from the UK
they used to find finges on cars at a time because a challenge was to touch the car when passing and just when you jest the story of rally with the group b it got crazier than now
About that backseat driver thing.. One of the absolut best rally drivers in the world, Tommi Mäkinen, had a fall out with his co-driver and telling him he was just there for the rules, not really necessary. So he got pissed and left 10 min before the race. Tommi payed one of the homeless people in town to ride with him, and the recording from that race is hysterical: the homeless guy keeps yelling at Tommi to slow down and calls him an idiot, asshole etc. But Tommi proved his point about the race, he won, of course. But got later disqualified after his co-driver told the managment what happend..
Pretty sure this story got debunked, it was a satire article in a motorsport magazine or something but people mistook it as true, at least that's what I remember
THIS is why we watch Rally driving!! Those narrow streets are about as wide as a Dodge Ram truck and these guys are travelling at Freeway speeds and higher as they scream through them!! The cars vary from Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive but most top end Pro and Works cars are 4 wheel drive. Each set up gives some spectacular slides and drifts. The four rules for a true rally driver are... 1. Flat out, 2. Flat out and sideways, 3. Flat out and Airbourne, 4. Flat out and Both.

Walter roehrl once said that acceleration is when the tears of joy flow horizontally over your face and fund is when the flies squish on the side windows.
5:48 I guess i have to tell you guys why they stand on the road, the reason is because its a sign of respect, it hypes the driver up and shows the driver like, hey your doing good, thats also why everyone has a horn, its to show hype, now why dont the regulations change that?, well...; because its been changed many times, like if you look at GROUP B RALLY, youll be even more shocked, even though GROUP B RALLY has ended theres still a other version of it, Historic rally, Mostly done in Belgium, its rally but only with Rally cars that are classified as ''Oldtimers'', Its just a thing that shows respect in the rally community.
The one at 10.00 was Mark Higgins on the Isle of Man Ty course, he was in a production Suburu with a journalist in the passenger seat doing 160, there’s multiple cameras, one being above that shows how side ways he was. The best angle though is of Higgins and how calm he is, in an interview after he said that was the closest he’s come to dying.
a lot of the vids with the crowds right by the road where from the 80s group b days. the drivers actually complained. then perth west aus pulled a fast one in its inaugral wrc round and introduced a special stage which was a lap in the park in the city where fans could come and watch the rally but be at a safe distance. this took off and now all rallies have special stages for spectators to come and watch the cars in safety. (NZ last year designed a special stage that was unique in that the entire stage was visible from any point so fans got the full experience.
6:06 I'm pretty sure the driver is really focused on everything right in front of him that they might hit (ditches, trees, rocks, animals and people) and that he's not thinking ahead three turns. Rally drivers have the same thing that like jet pilots do. Just no fear of what might happen and a total focus on what they do. I'm not a huge rally fan but I imagine they cannot for one second think about what might happen, just drive entirely based on experience and instinct. They're crazy.
No, they are incredibly skilled. They spend years developing the skills, building the speed and rising up through the classifications. Most rally drivers are calm, focused, fastidious and intelligent. Calling them crazy does them a huge disservice.
10:35 "just take your foot off the gas". Taking his foot off the gas would have been the worst thing possible in that situation. Staying on the throttle is what allowed the cars 4wd system to maintain grip and pull out of the slide.

Rallying needs a lot more skill than NASCAR. The rally driver does not even get to drive the course before hand and has to rely on his navigator. In NASCAR its just an oval track with banked corners
You have to consider that a lot of Rallye stages don't change from year to year. And those full time teams go to those locations off season and do testing or scouting there. Big teams have a budget upwards of 50 million $ annually.
Re the heading... To a Nascar fan, the toast popping out of the toaster must be an adrenaline rush. Anything is more exciting than nascar. lets all drive in circles.... :)

just need to be fast and grab and turn or hopefully find a thick tree 🤣
Nowadays I'd hope that drones are more utilized for rally photography. You can get more interesting angles as well.
I imagine high velocity gravel might not be the healthiest thing to a lens.
. Nope had a 16k nikkor telelens😢1 stone at about 150meter was all it took
@hablamosmalinois9767 commendable, well done. Looking back I'm sure the life experience was worth the lens, I hope ❤

They've raced on purpose built non-oval circuits before, just never on a street circuit comprising of closed off public roads.
