Thank you. People seem to think Chibsons will be fine with a little work but they're garbage from the start, you'd be better off getting any Epiphone that at least has the correct scale length and fret spacing and some sort of quality control.
Well it really depends on who you buy it from, some sellers are great and don't use Gibson's logo, other's just buy the lowest quality ones they can and resell them. So let's not just make blanket statements. There are sellers using nitro finish, ABR bridges, actual Gibson pickups, real Kluson tuners, and doing quality relic work out of china on replicas, hell Eastman makes some of the best ES 335 and LP style guitars money can buy out of Beijing.
@@Spittin_Bars I don't think anyone would argue that good guitars can't come from China. What most people are talking about when they talk about Chibsons is cheap, poor quality brand knockoffs. BTW, I checked out the Eastman site. Nice guitars.

My Chibson is amazing. I mean we all know Chibsons are NOT about quality electronics or hardware. I love these videos of guys complaining about these Chinese made guitars. I have 4 of these guitars and with a little shielded wire and quality pots and maybe a pickup change out these guitars play as well as any Gibson guitar. They are made of Mahogany with solid Maple tops, Ebony fret boards, and are finished beautifully. I would put mine up against any Gibson USA made guitars as their equal and would smoke any Epiphone Les Paul in playability or tone. Of the 4 guitars I own 1 arrived with a damaged fret that I had to change out. It took me about 3 hours to get the new one dressed up and in the neck, a little more filing and and she plays like a million dollars. My son has a Gibson custom and I have a contemporary Fender strat that I enjoy very much but don't discount these Chinese guitars because of what guy's like this are saying. They probably do see nothing but jacked-up chibson's that need fixed , after all that is why they are brought to them, but not all of these guitars need a fret job right out of the box. Find a reputable supplier and you'll be quite surprised!
easy fix - That POS costs $400. A real one costs $4000, so Dave's fee is $3600 to make it play. You wont need to say no to anyone then, they just won't ever show up.

I have had several Gibsons. 2 SGs. I scored a Samick Artist SG 450 SG clone from a friend for free. After a fret dress and new pickups and tuners it plays just as good as my Gibsons. SO If you don't mind no open book profile on the headstock, these guitars are a very good choice for very little money. Score one for $200, put quality used Ebay tuners and used Ebay pickups. You can have a real sweet axe for less than $400. They have a neck joint just like a real SG. I put 56 to 13 strings on mine and ran it in B for a while even. When I was in a band the rhythm guitar player replaced the Rick 330 I sold him cheap with an SG. It sounded great for what we were playing but absolutely refused to stay in tune! If I had know he would sell the 330 I either would have bought it back or never sold it in the first place. I'm still furious about it. - Dave
Yep, the Epiphones are still pretty decent. The last 10 years at Gibson seem to have been a fucking disaster area. Was warned off them in 2014, Forgot and ordered a decent looking Les Paul a year ago and it turned out to be an utter dog of a thing.
Is it that difficult to buy a second hand Epiphone or (real) Gibson? At least then you've gotten something for your money. Good on ya Dave. I hate those junk piles too. Always reluctant to work on them. 👍
TheColonelKlink I wouldn’t support Gibson, even then I would rather the Epiphone. The problem with these things is you could get a piece of shit or something you could easily mod up and basically have a real Gibson “like” guitar for cheap (Which I’d do as a middle finger to em).
Yeah, screw Gibson and their corporate nonsense. I'll stick with other companies who make Les Pauls, Explorers, and Flying-V guitars: Dean, Jackson, ESP, and many others! I started playing guitar BECAUSE of Tom Scholz, Ace Frehley, and their Gibsons. But, I'm just disgusted with the company these days. I've played many Gibsons over the decades (since 1978), and they're no better than a well made copy with a decent setup and decent pickups.
I got my used beat to hell Gibson for $500. Switched over to some brighter pickups and it sounds amazing. Don't see why anyone would even buy an Epiphone. There's tons of old used Gibsons for cheap. Some are great as is.
@@fireemblemistrash75 If you buy a higher end Epiphone like a tribute or a pro plus from a good store that looks them over(sweetwater is the best I know of online) , you are unlikely to get a piece of shit. If you do, you can return it. I bough my epi pro plustop about 5 years ago. The amber was on clearance for $450 which is the color I wanted anyway. It has the probucker pickups and they are good enough that I think i would be a waste to change them. It's an excellent guitar, frets are level, no flaws anywhere on craftsmanship, came set up perfectly. Only things I've changed are the 3-way switch that was occasionally shorting out( a switchcraft was like $10) and the nut which I usually change to tusq xl for better tuning stability anyways. A total of about $20 of upgrades. Gibson owns Epiphone so they are still getting some of your money anyway, just not as much. Agile is another company that reportedly makes really good Les Paul copies in the $400-500 price range. People who have them say they are better than Epiphone. I think they are Korean made.
Dave, I am 65 years old and switched from drums to bass guitar because of stenosis. For the last few months I have watched quite a few of your videos and I must say you are the most down to earth, most entertaining, and lovable person I have seen on Tube. Can you send me an address?
I've been putting cheese in the truss rod hole of my guitars for years and it plays so much better... im sick of these RUclipsrs that think they know everything
@@HALman1973 True. For a twist, try some Pecorino Romano; you'll love the C# and F# sounds. Those Italians know how to make cheese and perform opera at the same time!
With the state of Gibson’s quality control lately it’s honestly getting harder to tell the difference. Bought a brand new Les Paul Junior DC Tribute bass and... The truss rod covers badly off centre. The pickup doesn’t have enough foam under it to stop it flapping around underneath the cover or sinking into the bass (with audible noise through the amp as the cover and pick up rub on each other). There’s a gap/crack in the lacquer under the headstock veneer. Half the frets aren’t dressed on the treble side of the neck. The headstock shapes nowhere near semetrical. The e string tuners not installed straight, it’s totally out of line with the others. The frets aren’t crowned or polished whatsoever. Gibson’s response its ‘handmade’, you need to understand these imperfections in the context of it being ‘handmade’... No Gibson, just no.

If I had know he would sell the 330 I either would have bought it back or never sold it in the first place. I'm still furious about it.

I like the moment when Dave pauses as he realizes he was tightening the truss rod when he wanted to loosen it. Then he calls it a "no truss rod". Lol.
And I would take a Epiphone Les Paul and G400 Pro Sg over Gibson all day long...
Yep, the Epiphones are still pretty decent. The last 10 years at Gibson seem to have been a fucking disaster area. Was warned off them in 2014, Forgot and ordered a decent looking Les Paul a year ago and it turned out to be an utter dog of a thing.
@Danibolical 1 lucky! I hear those Tokai's are superior to gibsons. MIJ craftsmanship is second-to-none.
“Gotta get the camera” BEST line ever.
You keep on “farming,” Dave. You’re the greatest!
Your a Nut dude, great work and commentary! Aaand you've earned a like and subscribe, congratulations!
Next video Dave you should actually torch one of those bootleg so-called copies!! so we can watch!!!
I find that Cheddar gives a better tone than Brie. It must be Extra Matured though.
@@HALman1973 True. For a twist, try some Pecorino Romano; you'll love the C# and F# sounds. Those Italians know how to make cheese and perform opera at the same time!

Truss rod cheese...mmm....its got nothing on string cheese though!
I'll see myself out.
Thanks again Dave, your a Nobel man in a difficult trade! Thanks over and over for all we learn from you each time! Even when you do it again!!!!
So, they used the truss rod cavity to smuggle coke! 😂
Nah just the odd immigrant.
@@edmundblackaddercoc8522 Let's keep the humour far away from that sort of thing, I think Trump has already done enough of that!

@@edmundblackaddercoc8522 Sorry dude, I can't abide, besides aren't you an immigrant too or are you a native American?
Keep doing what you're doing.....over and over and over.
Johnathan Doe hey johnathan maybe you bought a Chibson, i understand it,s going on more then you think.lol
Lots of genuine LOLs 😂
And actual skill!
I have a Chibson LP & its great, no issues, polished the frets, new strings. Great guitar. I guess it depends on the factory.
I have 4 and they are great.
I have a Chelecaster and it's pretty nice. Good to learn luthiery on and do mods as well.
Amen Brother! I learn so much from you Dave..Have a good weekend...Cheers from Halifax...
