I was horrified! I've spent a good while getting my Strat to suck in those farting screws, cos I hate them biting into my hand. There's a very limited range of screwability in those bent saddles; the more solid, cast ones are better, though I'm not sure how much those affect about sound.

Man my days of soldering are over. The EMG Geezer pickups are great, have vintage 70's tone and just plug in. And you can change the the knobs. As far as the Fender bridge goes the chrome is pretty with the name on it. But they don't make black 😳 I went with Gotoh on 3 of my P basses. I really don't care about giving Fender extra money. Personally with some of the bullshit they've pulled in the past they can pound sand. That doesn't mean I hate Fender, I just hate their politics.

I think that packaging is a sign of the times. (Although now with the pandemic, times are changing.) I figure you are definitely right to say that humans love packaging. Probably sometimes we love the packaging subconsciously more than we love what's inside the package. For example, look how attractive a bag of potato chips is, all for a a handful of chips. And how often we can get sucked in to impulse buy at the checkout counter, etc.

Sweet clear tone on that Precision there Dave.
I revisited Precision land a few years back and picked up a slightly modded MIM.
Changes - Black scratch-plate, nicer on sunburst. Creamery 65 pickup Omega Bridge.
I like them best when they're a little bit imperfect.
When there's a couple of 'dead spots' here and there.
The old 70s maple one I had in the 90s was great like that; dead spots, slightly tired pickup.
I was a fool to let it go really ...
This MIM I have now is a bit too 'Good'.
Maybe she'll age before I'm done.
Next string change I'm thinking of going for Flats.

Dave here in South Australia, we have had no confirmed new cases in the last 10 days. No one in hospital recovering and we are now being encouraged to visit regional areas to boost their economy. Still have to keep social distancing in mind, but our borders are closed to interstate visits, other than freight. Australia is closed to international travel, both in and out. We have had 4 deaths here, I believe, all linked to people on a cruise ship and some American and Swedish visitors to our wine region.

Hey bass players: question - Do we like the nickel version of those Rotosound swing bass 66 strings? I’ve just recently replaced my strings with the 66 stainless steel strings (orange package), which I gather are well regarded and it’s the stainless version that gives the Swing Bass 66s their reputation. To be honest, I’m not in love with them. I like the way they sound - hefty and growly - although they’re sharper and more high-end dominant than I need them to be. But I *hate* the way they feel/play. They’re the least smooth strings I’ve ever tried - they grate my fingers up and down the scale. They feel like I just went to a machining/metal supply store and asked for raw industrial wire slathered in machine oil and threw those on. I’m wondering if I should try the nickel version of the 66s?

    • @tylerwmbass
      @tylerwmbass 4 года назад +1

I'd say def give the nickel rotos a try, or pretty much anything from DR.
Recently got the DR pure blues and like em a lot. These are the ones DR won over Victor Wooten with. They're "quantum nickel" the idea being you get the feel of nickel with (some of) the brightness of steel. They don't sound quite as bright as steel, but I feel they sound different than most nickel strings, in a good way.

I'm not a fan of aftermarket fat bridges, because vintage bridges work great.

The reason you have to shim the neck pocket even though the neck is straight is because the body warps slightly over time due to the string tension also. You can check the body with a straight edge.
