  • Two hundred years after her death Jane Austen's novels are hugely popular the world over so it might surprise you to hear that very few examples of her handwriting survive.
    There are no manuscripts of her famous books and many of her letters were destroyed after her death.
    So you can understand the excitement when the Jane Austen House Musuem in Chawton in Hampshire had the chance to buy a fragment of her handwriting. The scrap of paper was stuck onto a letter by her nephew in 1870.
    Briony Leyland has had exclusive access to the team who have been literally peeling away the past.
