There’s this great user review on steam that basically says why I like this game so much- rather than bask in the stupidity of early 90’s internet, Hypnospace honors it’s creativity and passion. Yes, there are scumbags on there, but most of the people are just kind, misguided, or wrapped up in their own little worlds, but is that a bad thing? The game acts as a window into the psyche of people you don’t even know, and it’s amazing how sympathetic some of these text-only characters could be. Hypnospace is an entire medium of self expression and that is a beautiful thing.
We always see 80's nostalgia pandering in media these days, and while there's plenty to like about the 80's, it's about time the 90's got its due. Hypnospace Outlaw really does pay homage to that time, and allows you to soak in the atmosphere of the early internet, which was simple yet brimming with personality and soul.
@@MrSkerpentine holy shit that’s awesome! I was able to get the original when it showed up on gamepass a while back and, while I didn’t complete it completely guidless, I did enjoy it a lot and it was a really fun experience.
My parents almost became one of those types of Christians, however when one has three constant curious begging children who never had experience with Pokémon in their life they decided “Okay but if we don’t like it we’re giving it to your cousins” and we got the first Pokémon movie. Long story short, many years later my mom is now super fascinated by Pokémon and we got her her own 3DS and Pokémon games for Christmas last year.
I remember being swept up in the "Pokemon is satanic!" craze as a kid. I didn't play it much to start, but I remember so many of my friends who loved it and were heartbroken to have to throw their cards and games away. Their supersitious parents just listened to their pastors, just like they listened to whoever else they got the conspiracy theory from. I remember being AT the service where Ken Graves talked all about how "satanic" Pokemon was for "teaching kids evolution" (it doesn't do that either). What a joke.
My Mom ised to be one of those parents. She relented and now looks back on it as a ridiculous thing to have believed (ironically right before they put God into the games. XD)
Going back and reading the articles that originated the panic is a real treat. I remember one site claiming that "pika-chus" were some kind of Jungian psuedo-spiritualism. They basically tried to roll everything a boomer could hate into this one game to a hilariously incomprehensible result.
I was lucky and my parents, uncles and grandmothers never bringed the "They are Satanic" to Pokémon, Digimon and anime in general. Funny enough, a couple of years ago, various churches in my city allowed people to play Pokémon Go at the main entrance or gardens. How things change with the years.

I really wish I had lived through the early internet a lot more. When I got my first computer in 2007, sure I got to see some of early youtube and participate in forums but, for the most part, the internet was losing it's smallness. Even small forums have too many people now to see their stuff every now and again. The internet stopped being people with an affinity for computers, and just odd stuff and became... everything. Now that the internet holds everything, most people can interact with it as much as you can with a book.
I never once thought about running footage back through a VCR to get that old 80s to 90s effect, WAY better than the actual filter that most editing software come with. After watching this review I wanted to grab this game for the longest time, but my laptop is basically a potato chip. Luckily it released on consoles not too long ago so I grabbed the PS4 version and... man, you weren't kidding. This really is something special. The authenticity, world building and structure of it all is fantastic. I intended to try it for a few minutes before heading to sleep last night and ended up playing until 2 am just because of how invested I was. Such a unique premise on top of an incredible execution, mixed with that perfect amount of nostalgia for those of us who were just growing up when the internet was in its infancy. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, dude!

The kid being banned from the Pokemon expy hit really close to home for me, my step father was a religious extremist who was also a high school drop out. So he thought witchcraft was real. I remember one day we came home from school, and we were sat down and told that we weren't allowed to like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh anymore. He even took final Fantasy 4 away from me because there were mages in it.
I played through this game the day it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through. I especially think the final part after the game ends is pretty cool, and it pertains to my interest as someone who likes saving history. I'm glad you enjoyed it too!
Loved the opening skit, and the game sounds pretty interesting. The minor spoiler you mentioned certainly feels like something that easily could have actually happened.
Just you describing that sub story with the little girl broke my heart... It reminds me of a lot of stuff I saw early on on the interwebs in the early 2000s.
I was wondering if anyone else noticed. I think that's the first thing that gravitated me to him back when he had 2,000 subscribers. love his content so much I subbed twice on my two devices.

i love watching these obscure game reviews! i really really wanna play this now :-00 faith and faith II seem like really cool spooky, obscure games that would be up your alley!
This game reminds me alot of reading terminals in Fallout. It's all about seeing things that have already happened. Like, someone will say they will run away on some path, and if you go out there, they're body will be there. It's cool/wieeeerd. I love it.
3:51 Speaking of forums, the guy who made this is on one of the forums I post on. I don't know him really well but it was still cool to see you cover this.
3:06 I disagree, I find it actually adds to that 90s novelty aesthetic feel without being overly cumbersome like actual 90s download times were. Anybody else remember leaving their computer on for a week just to download a game or a movie?
Happy to see you covering this. I watched Manly play this not too long ago, and I really enjoyed it. That poor little Christian girl; gotta love how these stories are shaped. Keep up the fun work, Rad and Brady. :) God bless yours and you! :)
I backed this game all the way back in October of 2016 when I was in my edgy vaporwave phase. As I grew up, so did the game and I was impressed by the fact it now had a deeper meaning. I have a test build of the game in my hard drive somewhere and I'm going to get the multimedia experience this December. I'm debating whether or not to share that stuff.
Wow, good job with that review Nitro! Very well done. Did you know there is a Hypnospace page builder tool? You can already create your own content, which can be added to the game later via the Steam Workshop.

Oh yeah that's what it is. I couldn't place the song and it was bothering me, thank you 2 years later lol
@@nicolasroy8481 Anytime man. See you in the Apple Market.
hypnospace is so cool i wish the internet was real
for the first time I'm in the one minute club!
I know the feeling. It's been a while and she looks really hot... happens to everyone, dude.
lol@@greenhowie
4:30 I've been watching hot dad since Phillip Defranco gave him a shout out back in 2016. Love his content.
He also made a trailer for another interesting indie game called Soda Drinker Pro.
I think this might be my favorite video of yours. You did a good job of communicating why and how this game is so compelling, without giving too much away.
Plus, that intro scene was way too good
I'm a simple man. I see Nitro Rad, I click.
@Revilo Revlis I mean hey, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
I absolutely love the intro! I'll have to add this to my growing list of "games to check out because Nitro Rad said so".
I played through this game the day it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through. I especially think the final part after the game ends is pretty cool, and it pertains to my interest as someone who likes saving history. I'm glad you enjoyed it too!
2:57 bro didn’t know about the mouse wiggling bwl
Loved the opening skit, and the game sounds pretty interesting. The minor spoiler you mentioned certainly feels like something that easily could have actually happened.
Damn, the concept of this game truly captivated me, i'm gonna give it a chance
As an early backer, I'm happy that can relive the life of a 30 year old boomer
Commenting before i've even watched the entire video? Wow! how does that work?!
Just you describing that sub story with the little girl broke my heart... It reminds me of a lot of stuff I saw early on on the interwebs in the early 2000s.
I still find it ironic that a youtuber named "Hot Dad" is playing a washed-up '80s rock star in the game.
Every nitrorad video is a 80's vaporwave experience
I was wondering if anyone else noticed. I think that's the first thing that gravitated me to him back when he had 2,000 subscribers. love his content so much I subbed twice on my two devices.
Know what NR... the best thing about your videos is that you put your heart on them, i can feel whenever you make a video that you actually are speaking with your heart! keep on the good job!
Oh God, I love that intro so, so much.
Having just finished Civvie's coverage of Slayer X... I didn't expect this to be where it started.
Get ready nerd, because dream stelert is coming soon and jay tholen (loser) is hiring people to help. as if they need it
@@CrocogatorZane is that you?
@@brya9681 pppfft no, id' never be that awesome. just a slayer like you
I saw Vinny play this some time ago and thought it looked really neat. Great to hear it plays as well as it looks!
i love watching these obscure game reviews! i really really wanna play this now :-00
faith and faith II seem like really cool spooky, obscure games that would be up your alley!
I can't wait to try it out, I love the 90's internet vibe
Dude watching this video on a CRT monitor from the 90's makes this feel even more vintage!
This game is severely getting slept on
Just finished it and I loved every second of it
This game reminds me alot of reading terminals in Fallout.
Well done, thanks for always going through the effort to raise awareness on games that could go under our radars!
I completely missed the Squisherz art contest! Goes to show that this game is crammed full of hidden gems
Gotta love the extra effort in this video. Great job!
This game is SO NitroRad material, I'm glad you covered it.
Also that poor girl noooooooo
3:06 I disagree, I find it actually adds to that 90s novelty aesthetic feel without being overly cumbersome like actual 90s download times were. Anybody else remember leaving their computer on for a week just to download a game or a movie?
I remember that in the early 2000's, I downloaded a small game and it took almost a month to be installed. I had bad internet.
Also if your tiered of them you can move your mouse around rapidly to speed up load times
You just had to mention Deus Ex, did ya? *reinstalls Deus Ex*
2:56 Oh, you mean like the actual internet? 1999 was WAY slower than that, but even now, pages can take a short while to load.
Happy to see you covering this. I watched Manly play this not too long ago, and I really enjoyed it. That poor little Christian girl; gotta love how these stories are shaped. Keep up the fun work, Rad and Brady. :) God bless yours and you! :)
Wish I could have my mind erased so I could experience it again
I backed this game all the way back in October of 2016 when I was in my edgy vaporwave phase. As I grew up, so did the game and I was impressed by the fact it now had a deeper meaning. I have a test build of the game in my hard drive somewhere and I'm going to get the multimedia experience this December. I'm debating whether or not to share that stuff.
please do; I know i'm late to the party but i'd love to see anything like that, i've spent hours watching Jay's dev streams just to get a glimpse lol
Wow, good job with that review Nitro! Very well done.
Did you know there is a Hypnospace page builder tool? You can already create your own content, which can be added to the game later via the Steam Workshop.
That 90s nostalgia is so awesome
i had a really bad day and seeing that you uploaded made it a little bit better
Wow that was a tubular opening dude, it's 90's every day of the year now.
Though really keep up this amazing work i adore it.
...did Rad just... _completely_ miss the whole _”wildly jerk your mouse around to make pages load faster”_ thing?
What about the old Bubsy review pages?
This game remind me of Orwell, a similar game about a dystopian country that use a similar system to control the people, it's pretty good.
Doing great things man. Continue doing what you do, congrats on 165K subs and lastly, please don't lose yourself. You are as rad and cool just the way you are.
Imagine a speedrun where you have to delete every single kind of content, even if it doesn't break the rules. It would be total hell.
I literally can’t stop laughing at the beginning, like” Surfing the net *SMACK* in your dreams~~ ...WOW!” Makes me cry everytime. This has to be one of my favorite intros you have done. It’s pure gold and need to be shared with the world. Keep up the great work as always!!!
Hearing Gex in the background really brought me back, I love this
