I am trying to use free wood chips from tree chippers. I tried using a stainless steel colander. I got them to start but they turned to coals. Just like a match stick when it runs out of wood it goes out. so I turned the colander over to make a bed of coals.
Fernbark Frist I was thinking the same thing. I have a ammo can stove I’ve used a while and put a thicker metal plate in the bottom, that could work too. Btw I liked the idea of angle stock at different levels. Sometimes you just have to experiment and see what happens, right? 😁👍
They are inexpensive. They burn cleaner than logs. They don't need to dry out as they come completely dry. They are a easy substitute if you run out of logs. You might already have some if you own a pellet stove. They never have bugs. I am sure I am missing some other advantages.
They don't fill your chimney with creosote, which can cause fires. They put out a consistent heat, opposed to the spikes and lows that you have burning logs. Wood burning stoves are great if you live in the middle of nowhere where the power can go out for days on end and the winters are especially cold (since you will freeze without electricity otherwise). Other than that, pellet stoves are modern and superior in pretty much every other way.

@@FernbarkFrist for me after my 10th back surgery I replaced the wood stove with the pellet stove. Now I order a couple pallets of pellets and have them delivered. My nephew loads my hopper up for me once or twice a week. It still works. The key is to have those angle bars going through it to provide air. It will burn down to about a quarter inch before it goes out. I usually refill it about 2/3 empty. It is not super hot, but if your room is chilly, it will take the chill out. If I re-do another box, I think I will add more air bars near the bottom.
Take #10 food can(you know the big ass industrial sized ones) and drill holes in the bottom as well as around the bottom quarter of the sides. Fill 2/3 and light with some alcohol gel.
I use a metal loaf pan 1) put some candle wax on the bottom 2) layer of pellets 3) some cotton balls with vasaline on them 4) more pellets Adjust to suit your needs Burn time about 1 hour with occasionally stirring I use it everyday works fine you can use bigger metal pan if needed
i would like to get or make one and try a bag of pellets, i have a fireplace that i use on occasion and not a lot of wood, it would give me another option.
Use some bolts for Small legs then 3-5 angle width, 2-3 length wise, I have this setup, I also have cut down a .50 can just a bit so more heat gets retained or spread in fire chamber also use single wall chimney and some aluminum fins on slight angle to fins that and one of those powerless fans is great multi purpose rigs for tent/house/cabin/RV! I have 2 homemade stoves a 2x 50 can & a 40mm can, at 3"-4" chimney, these mods and a few other things, make for much less pain in outdoors, pellets cost 1.75 a bag, I also have removable LP burners for when longer heat is needed! Also charcoal and pressed logs/bricks work well at night, a bag of charcoal will get you thru the night at deer camp! Remember vent, we ran vent under stove to get more air, screened in of course! With damper too?
I can't tell what the box is sitting on inside the stove. Is it simply sitting on the bottom? If so, perhaps if you sat it up on a couple of bricks you would get flow up through.
Use a lighting gell andmix it in with the pellets, and you dont need legs attached to the box, just use 2 strips of the angel iron and place the box on top of the strips
yes even better you can run out to one of the dollar stores or big lots and purchase a size-able stainless steel colander which will last you a long long long time
Harbor Freight has “ammo cans”. At least what they sell is the size and shape of military ammo cans. Another way to get an already perforated container is to buy an IKEA utensil drainer. It is cylindrical and made of stainless steel.
Our average winter temp is in the 40's , so for us, it does a nice job of taking the chill out of the room that doesn't get heat from the pellet stove.

I wonder if having holes in the bottom would help. When the hot air rises it could bring fresh air from underneath and feed the fire.
It might, although then I would worry about the bottom burning out, although, it never actually burns all the way to the bottom.

Damper to hold the heat closer to the appliance?

Sounds like a good system. I might give it a go since the ammo can is too large for my other wood stove.
I like you idea! I have a small fireplace insert not a freestanding wood stove, do you think that this would work in an insert as well?

Been a while since I made this. but I think it was just sittng on the bottom. Would be better raised.
Did you continue to burn pellets?
Every once in a while. Usually straight wood
agreed
please tell me that's not galvanized angle iron you added.. what size are the holes?
I think they are 3/8.
What's wrong with using galvanized iron?
I have been burning the pressed hard wood logs ( made from saw dust ). They burn much nicer than cord wood and cost the same.
Where did you get them for the same price as cord wood?
@@jessicaolson3565 I live close to the factory that màkes the bricks
Rest it on a couple of length of rebar
How long does an ammo can of pellets burn for?
90 min to two hours. It is a pretty small fire.
@@FernbarkFrist thanks for responding. Trying to figure out if pellets are worth dragging along while winter camping!
Has the can and angle metal held up after many burns? What duration is a burn with the can full? I assume you use an alcohol starter fluid?
The ammo can is holding up pretty good. I get about 90 minutes to two hours off a full can. I was using a gel starting fluid.
How many pounds per hour does that can burn to keep a room warm?
I have to refill it about every 30-45 minutes.
K, thanx

Just get an ammo can and drill a crap load of holes in it.
What is a Ammo-can and where do you get one,,, thank you

can you do this in mobile home?
If your wood burning stove is approved for a mobile home.
If you want to do time in the pen, Go right ahead. LOL

Don't know. I don't have an electric fireplace to try it on.
No. No. No. No. An elecric fireplace usually doesn't have a working chimney.

Yes, they don't even have to be very high.
Legs and holes in the bottom.
Just set the box on a couple of pieces of the angle iron for a test run.
