I have been burning pellets in my wood stove for over 20 years. After several iterations I settled on a shoe-box sized unit made out of angle iron and 1/4 inch stainless steel welded wire mesh. The bottom is made from 3/8" steel cut from an old wood stove. Same for the front panel. The steel sections are drilled with 3/8" holes in a grid pattern much like you did your unit. The sides and back panel are made from the wire mesh. The fire box has stubby 1"legs. Just throwing in a pile of pellets just doesn't work well. You can't add pellets without smothering the bottom and creating lots of smoke. It just smolders. This is why the legs and the holes in the bottom are necessary. If you want to add pellets to the box you must first take an implement or gloves and bang the unit up and down to sift the spent ash away from the remaining coal. This allows air to circulate from the bottom and then you can add new pellets on top to continue the burn. You do not have to take the burning chamber out of the stove. To start a new fill I spritz kerosene on the top and light that. To speed up the burn I also jam a heat gun against the bottom of the front panel to create a coal that will burn from the bottom up. With the kerosene burning from the top down and the coal burning from the bottom up the stove comes to temperature pretty quick. Using this unit I can get a burn to last 6-7 hours. I have determined that this unit uses about the same amount of pellets that an actual pellet stove uses per day. The heat output of pellets in this unit is comparable to burning wood pieces. I just set my air intake where I want and it just cruises for several hours. I burned wood for several decades before I went to pellets and I won't go back. Pellets burn 50% cleaner that split wood. Pellets are much easier to store and transport. My small home is entirely heated by this stove and an additional electric oil-radiator stove when needed. The main thing when burning pellets is that they need a LOT of air.

This design makes it very easy for my wife to simply change out a "cartridge", light, and use it for easy use of our wood stove.

Thanks for a great instructional video. You answered a question I've had about an alternate to gel fire starter. Here in Ontario, a 1 liter bottle of the stuff is 15 dollars plus 13% tax. I'm sure hand sanitizer would be less than half of that. It's a big help to know that. I'll stock up on it. You have a great backup there now for the absolute insanity that is going on in our world. Very inspirational - I've got a 1000Kg pallet of pellets I bought earlier this year as a compact 'backup fuel' to my heating oil which was, at the time, 2.5x the price! I was going to install a homemade pellet stove but have since installed a large wood burning cooker/oven combo and was a bit miffed that I couldn't use the pellets - now I can, thank you! :)
I prefer to keep my ammo cans for actually storing ammo as they're quite expensive in Europe, even second hand ones.
I ordered some of those IKEA 'ORDNING' stainless steel kitchen utensil baskets that have holes already in them - They're round and hold less than an ammo can but I can fit 3 of them in my cooker, delivering a similar quantity and surface area of pellets. The stainless should hopefully last a while and having 1 - 3 baskets allows regulating the heat output. I'll report back after I've tested it.

I bought a couple of bbq pans from Lidl, they work OK but the fire's so hot they glow red and distort.
Keep your pellets dry, in a shed or garage where moisture cant get them.
Fantastic vid, appreciate the thorough explanation. We have an old dead heatilator fireplace that I want to replace with a wood burning insert this winter to supplement our $$$ fuel oil. Seems like a couple pallets of pellets down in the basement would be easier than storing split wood, and this would work in a power outage unlike an electric pellet burning insert.

That's a great low tech idea especially for someone that does not have welding equipment I replaced my wood stove door with a removable metal one and made a gravity feed pellet burner .I can get about 7 hours of burn time ,but I suspect it doesn't push out nere the BTU's per hour that yours does ,Good job, thanks for sharing

I bought a all 'Packer' stove that can be used in a tent years ago. Just thought that you might like to know that the instructions ( yes, I read them.) Said to put 1" of dirt in the bottom to protect it. I guess creosote would cause corrosion over time. I had a bag of Perlite for gardening which is lighter and is also good insulation on the bottom in it now, And have s kitchen sieve that fits . It's kind of small so I'll have to get something else,thanks for the tip and keep your powder dry. And away from the stove! I forgot to say that my stove also came with telescoping stove pipes, when collapsed they could thus be stored for transport inside of itself, Hot water tank side shelf a ' Spark arrestor' available in one neat package ( for a little more $) or separately as finances / need 👍

I burn some pellets in my wood stove, I bought a 2 quart, stainless kitchen cauldron, lots of holes, burned great $5. I get good heat 2 hours off 4 coffee cup of wood pellets . Easy to remove to dump ash.
I think your box is sitting so close to your pipe exhaust that much het is going up your chimney. I burn mine near front door. Your last open burn gets more radiant heat to brick & steel surfaces.
My exhaust has a second burn on it so it does not go straight up the back of my stove. Thanks for watching

I've been burning pellets for a while.
You are right, pellets need a lot of air, BUT that is in a pellet burner.
REMEBER a pellet burner FEEDS the pellets as needed and uses air flow to fire the pellets to max heat
with a blower. They dont have a pile of pellets to burn so it over fires.
Burning pellets in a wood stove needs a burner box that can restrict the air to control the heat and burn.
On your burn box, I think you have way too many holes but you have an excellant tool to work with.
TRY THIS....
Wrap aluminum foil for test around the box to close off all those holes.
at the open ends of the angle iron, punch a hole in the aluminum foil to let air in.
fill the box, start the fire from the top, not the bottom.
try regulating your air into the box.
The top fire will get hot enough to start burning the gasses off of the wood.
YOU SHOULD be able to increase your burn time with decent heat as pellets easily get way too hot and
can over fire the wood stove.

I converted an old woodstove into a pellet stone by cutting a feed tube and a vented burn basket and an air damper tube at the burn basket. That way, it draws air directly at the burn basket

That is very interesting, I don't have a wood burner, but useful information if I did. If you stove had a way that you could push air in, especially with the box, I would think you could get some good heat that way.
I’m going to experiment burning without the ammo box again and see if I can burn slower.
Just an idea for raising the bottom up use 4 bolts one in each corner with 2 nuts each then you can adjust bottom height for good burn. I mean you already have the holes for stainless bolts and nuts

We can definitely use the regular wood stove method for pellets

Try just holes in the Bottom of the can and like every half inch where you placed your top row around your can. This will burn hot then slow down for a bit while gas is building in the can then it will start burning the gas at the top again ( gasifier ). So you end up with 1 row around the top of the can and alot of holes in the bottom it will draw air from the bottom so supporting it with the angle iron like your doing anyway will help. Try doing this , you should not be burning a whole nights worth of pellets in just two hours this way. Also a stove flu heat exchanger ( or reclaimer ) would help with the temperatures your losing in the stove pipe.

I think I'm going to make a basket based on the rocket stove design. Most of the videos I've seen are just baskets with holes all around but I think they would work better if it created a chimney effect like a rocket stove.

My experience is a metal container with holes at least 1 inch apart works much better than a fry wire type basket. The fire 🔥 as it begins to burn, draws air rapidly through the spread apart holes, and dissipated new flame into entire inside of mostly enclosed container. The extreme heat GASSIFIES THE fuel inside, and the air jets create great, dispersed combustion. Wire basket is about the same as a open wood fire, depending upon updraft only. The air jets really make a big difference

Sounds crazy but if you watch closely pellets will burn from top down as long as you have plenty of air flow more holes in the basket

Where I live pellets have tripled in price so their not really interesting anymore. Firewood and coal also got more expensive but not as much.

We used to have a pellet stove with a fan but when power would go out due to a storm, etc. the fan wouldn't work and the stove didn't heat the house very well. How well does this heat the house? Even when we had the fan it didn't heat the house very well when really cold outside. We ended up getting an insert for burning wood in our fireplace, keeps the house toasty.

In the end the Ammo container just seemed like a waste of time. Just toss em in there and start it up. Unless you plan to do some welding and cut a whole on the side where you can fill wood pellets into and setup some thin steel bars at the bottom to setup pellet feeder on the outside as alternative of some sort. Probably stick with wood on that one. Good little steel stove there. I probably wouldn't modify it for pellets.

I think I have to experiment more with just throwing them in close my dampers but I guess not much longer unless I can slow the burn down a lot. I think I am going to try it again. Thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM the best scenario if you had to use the ammo cans to get like 2 hours of heat is to have 2 cans all loaded up and flip them when one burns out- you can also put some gel firestarter on the pellets but it seems the hand sanitizer works pretty good.

Dont know if you are still monitor this on here, but you didnt say how long those pellets burned in the ammo can or inside . I got a wood stove similar to yours. May just try to burn inside only. Hope this works ok. At least I do have an alternative fuel source. Im a Vet too.

Just use a drill bit size that is not bigger than the pellets. You can always add more if needed. Thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM I actually found a better way to burn pellets. After watching your entire video, I realized they burn hotter without the ammo box. So looking around my property, I found the post from a stop sign my kids must have brought home when they were teenagers. 2-1/2”X 2-1/2”X 1/8” galvanized square tube with 5/16” holes every 2”. I cut a piece the about 2” short of the inner width of my stove. Pile the pellets to the back of the stove, place the tube about 1-1/2” from the front of the stove widthwise, and leaving the door opened just a crack. The trick is lighting it, and I’m currently working on the best way to do that, but once you get it going, the air flowing through the tube actually causes jets of flame to shoot through the holes even while the pellets are no where near the tube. Pretty awesome, and should come in handy when wood is scarce. Thank you for the idea.

I think that was what I used. It could be done different ways.
Sounds like it would work in a pinch but it will not give you even close to the heat wood will . Pellets are getting expensive now especially with the 24% inflation . Good for a last resort or you dont require a lot of heat .

Reply if want to great. I have concluded wood stove has 100x more potential than it is currently doing, Eienstein Darwin shift towards tech advancement. Have something going on here with these wood stoves. I was looking at these designs and just by thinking about it i have concluded it is not not not good enough to be losing 80-90% of the heat out the chimney normally on a wood stove, shucks maybe on anything furnace or oil natural gas burner. The simplest way to describe simple solution to this problem is air to air heat exchanger. I have looked up a bit on these, my imagination of this design would be installing air to air heat exchaner inside the stove very close to the hottest part of the stove. Then can harvest much more heat, 100x more heat potential from the same amount of fuel changing the world forever. I think if you put in rectrangular tubes with car radiator fins inside them to get really hot then, send clean air through these rectangular tubes it would be blasting 100x more hot air from the stove. and the second part of the problem is harvesting and scavenging all the wasted heat from the chimney, need to figure out air to air heat exchangers inside the chimney that wouldn't cause too many problems.
You should make a video of this build I would like to see it.
I don't have a you tube channel that i make videos on. I think that would be fun thing to do. I really would like to patent my idea and sell these stoves, and make money on RUclips. If i had to pick on selling stoves for patent that are 100x heat efficient and less polution, i would rather give them away for free, in the mean time i have switched over to using clothes lines to dry my clothes out 24/7/365. Clothes lines to dry clothes is the best way for me and probably cheaper than any other way. I am always thinking about this.@@DIYJIM

throw the amo can away now take some square or round pipe cut a hole on the side of the stove stick the pipe on an angle into the stove build a square type of funnel on top with a sealed lid fill it with wood pellets and chips add some more in the stove also weld a smaller pipe on the side of the funnel going to the flue for smoke to escape when it becomes empty enjoy the fire for hours and hours , you have built a self feeding stove , i have built a bunch also built a rocket stove that burns at 850f wood chips (less heat) or pellets or mixed (same heat) from a junk oil burning hot water heater because it has a 3inch flue perfect for a rocket stove the fire box is at the bottom a square 2x4 pipe welded to the flue the fire goes up through it at the top the heater was cut open to cut the flue shorter and a lid was welded on top it forces the exhaust down to the bottom of the cylinder and out a 4 inch pipe it makes amazing heat
