Ill have to disagree with you. You're attacking a certain archetype known as a "soyboy", not millenials as a group. There are plenty of honerable people in every generation, and plenty of snakes in every generation.
Yes, as a millennial we have called the ones you describe as soyboys for a long time. They are typically virtue signaling leftists who are really insecure cowards.
I think you summed it up better than anyone else. If your entire existence is an ironic, self-deprecating joke, then every criticism can be dismissed with “I don’t care”. It’s a defense mechanism.
I agree, I'm a millennial and it seems like a lot of my peers are in a state of perpetual defensive apathy. Incredulity and scepticism are signals of social currency among them, but only when it comes to deviations from the secular status quo. It's very insecure behavior.
The "soyjack" stereotype isn't really a generational thing, more of a personality archetype. You're talking about a topic that was already getting thoroughly scrutinised in the mid 2010's internet culture
You reminded me of the sleepycabin clip where Zach Hadel talks about going to barcade and counting the amount of guys they saw there with thick rim glasses, as a game with his buddies while there.
My GOD, I hate those things. I'm a 50-year-old liberal gay man and I have JUST about had enough of EVERY DAMN KID wearing those nasty SJW glasses. NOBODY looks good in them. Even the characters in the new Dungeons and Dragons art have them on. What the fuuuuuck?
Millennial man here, its refreshing to see this called out. The lazy beard and soft opinions are everywhere, you know when a dude has a mullet and a mustache he's about as rebellious as a chest of drawers.
It’s upbringing. Millennials growing up with Gen X humor and in a world where they were told stuff like you just need a college degree… the world was insincere so they’re reflecting that Gen Z grew in straight harsh reality. Have crippling need to be seen and liked from social media so their humor is absurdist. The shit is just make the most random stuff ever like late night Adult Swim
This is an excellent point; however, looking back I remember them being insincere even back in 04-08 in HS although not to the same extent. Maybe every generation has insincere people its just that insincerity is in vogue right now.
Wait, eggshell white skin, prominent red lips, obviously not a natural blonde, touched up eyebrows, and wearing a necklace indoors? Are you sure you dont fit the millennial archetype?

A lot of people do. I was especially amused by the frightened millennials who wrote something like "noooooo. I'm a millennial and I don't look like that at all. I think the biggest problem is that you underestimate just how insincere humanity can be. I've met plenty of Gen Z, Gen X, and boomers, on top of millenials, who would gladly throw me or others under the bus (some my own family!). I really don't think this is a generations issue, but a people issue.
Millennials are some of the softest people I’ve met in my life (I’m 43 so I don’t know if I fall into the millennial category or not I’ll be honest I don’t pay attention to it) However. I will say that they are some of the most intellectually stubborn people you’ll ever meet and that is very much a generational thing, along with the entitlement. They will absolutely die on whatever hill they’re currently discussing and will absolutely not listen to reason or facts. It’s as though they have their own reality
@TheCrapOnYourStrapOn Again, these problems seem more like a human problem, than a generation problem. What you're describing also suits boomers and genz completely.
@TheCrapOnYourStrapOn Though I think I will agree on millenials being pretty soft. It seems to me that each generation keeps getting softer and softer.
@@alexlewis5365 yes I say it’s generational simply by the degree and the sheer widespread commonality. I’ve never met a generation more locked in on ideology at least in my country. They are nearly a monolith. Of course it’s not ALL of them but compared to previous generations it seems that groupthink has really taken hold of nearly an entire generation. Surely it has to do with the internet and the fact that with them you’re either in agreement with them or you’re an evil person
@TheCrapOnYourStrapOn I guess we just agree to disagree then. I think people who try to pin such huge problems on single generations, as opposed to the whole population, without definitive evidence, have a massive blindspot in their judgement. One of the biggest truths about mankind really is, the more things change, the more they stay same. The problems have always been there, regardless of generation.

That's called vocal fry where they talk like the Kardashians with an insincere condescending tone to sound superior, and above their own class. The oldest example you can find of it is the British actor who voices the tiger, Shere Khan in The Jungle Book (1967). Look it up.

I think the beard/tattoos look (and to a lesser extent, the obsession with craft beer) a lot of millennial men have is born out of a desire to be seen as a man. They have ironically adopted superficial markers in place of the qualities they are associated with to make up for shortcomings in their own personal development.
A lot of the tattoos are just hookup culture tramp stamps regardless of the gender. Not to say that some people don't get tattoos for some deeper spiritual, symbolic meaning anymore. But, if you see something like a whole sleeve of generic faux "tribal knotwork" patterns on the arms, lower back, or on their stomach above their crotch the later purpose is more likely. And, if you ask them to explain what those tribal patterns symbolizes to them they can't usually give you a clear answer.

Dude. 😂😂😂😂 I am laughing my @ss off at this video. Even though it is offensive to my generation calling us “insincere” I am 37 (born in 1987) If you see me, with my overgroomed hair, i dare say that I look like a guy from a pre-baby boomer generation in a younger version. (See actor Gregory peck and Charles Dance in younger years). And I don’t have facial hair at all. --------------- Maybe I differ from my generation peers. I do like to be playful and cheery in order to retain a youthful vibe. I remember as a kid, adults (boomers) were always uptight and only showed warm vibe when they were having “adult fun” like drinking, partying or watching a sports game. As for the teens and college folks (Gen-X) they seemed to be mean and selfish; when they interacted with me as kid they always sought to outsmart me for some laughs. I hoped my generation would be the most warm and cheery of all as adults. After so many crisis we’ve been through, we became one of the most hopes generations
I'm a Millenial dude (36) and I've been complaining about this for forever. But I think it's a post-internet thing. Gen Z calls anyone sincere "cringe" just like Millenials ostracized anyone who has a genuine passion or belief. Gen X were proudly nihilistic and poked fun of all beliefs as "naive". The writing in popular media has been really bad since Millenials hit the scene though. Unfortunately thats the influence we will be remembered for.
Whether you're a millennial, zoomer, boomer, etc. there will be people who will always have something negative to say about you or disaprove of your appearance. Whether i had long hair, shaggy hair, short hair combed to the side, shaved head, facial hair, no facial hair, someone has always said something negative about it at least once. Ironicall, i pretty much agree with everything this guy is saying, but i think when guys point out the percieved flaws of the looks of other guys, it's about a desire to feel superior in some sense. The underlying logic is "I don't look like you, someone i perceive as lesser than based off of physical characteristics, some which you have no control over, therefore i am better than you." You see tall men (not all) for example have this mentality towards shorter men and will down play the accomplishments of a shorter man. "Yeah, well, at least I'm tall, brah." I think this mindset stems from a secret insecurity and/or the desire to bring other men down as a low hanging ego boost because most people don't feel good about themselves unless they can compare others as lesser than them. Of course if there is a secret or subconscious insecurity from men like this, it's not like they'd ever admit it if they're aware of it as they fear it would make them look weak and that's the last thing a man wants to be perceived as, man's greatest fear, so they have to play the condescending Andrew Tate act to hide their insecurity, just like the Wizard of Oz being a little old man hiding behind this big, threatening Zordan-like projection, so who's really being insencere here? That's why often when we point a finger at someone, we have three pointing back and the advice and criticisms we have of others are often the advice and criticisms we need to apply to ourselves, but that requires introspection, self awareness and honesty with the self. "You can please some people some of the time, but you can't please all people all the time." -Abraham Lincoln So just be yourself because no matter what you do or look like, someone is gonna hate on you or make commentary. You can cure frickin' cancer and someone somewhere for some reason will criticize you for it. It is what it is. Best you can do is accept this is how the world and people are like.
I also didn't understand the point. He at least went to talk to millennials about why they dress like that? I'll at least have the patience to explain the millennial generation is the generation of academic theory. We didn't have time to do dances on Tik Tok or worry about aesthetic clothes. because the generation before us got it into our heads that we should be office slaves
While it is cringe, it isn't as nearly as cringe as gen Z's obsession with looksmaxxing or "escaping the matrix and becoming rich" wanna be's. What's up with this narcissism culture, it's always about looks/money, other people admiring you for simply existing, mogging and showing how much better you have it. Don't get me started on "mogging", just pure antisocial behaviour. People used to sacrifice themselves for the greater good of their communities, for other people but now the only thing that matters to them is "ME". "I have to mog and be better than others!", "I have to be as rich as possible to look down on brokies!", "I have to have the highest body count to show how much of a Chad I am!" The millennial dudes with conventional haircuts and an unkempt beard, or the curly hair mullet with a mustache remind me of those memes where a girl is saying "You'll never find another girl like me" and the accompanying picture is of a group of girls who are all wearing Keds, Clamdigger jeans, and identical looking shirts. They're too scared of rejection to have anything resembling a unique personality or outward appearance, so they just copy a trend and hope they fit in. The only "ironic" thing about them is that once you see 5 dudes who are back-to-back copies of each other they all start to become bland and uninteresting, and it's much easier to disregard/reject them when they're broadcasting to everyone that they're not unique or genuine. They're being told how to dress, they're being told what to think, and they love the security of conformity too much to ever be real men who take risks or plant their own unique flag on the ground.
I've actually heard a theory about the insincerity, being a matter of "irony". That is, a thing has become so ubiquitous that it loses any meaning it had, and is now employed only if one can poke fun at it, or use it to make fun of themselves (for example, "I'm doing this ironically"). As far as myself, being a millennial... I don't wear any part of my real self on my sleeve, where people can see it, for one very sad reason: as a kid, people would ridicule me for my interests, what I did on my spare time, how I looked, how I sounded - so if I were to manifest this type of "insincerity", it would be so no one could see the real me, and bully me for it. But that's just me.

The beard serves another purpose for millennials . Especially those of us who may be more conservative. For whatever reason( obesity, low T, easy lives etc.) We tend to have soft undefined faces with small flabby chins and no hardness to our faces. Even as we begin to go into our 40s we’re keeping that strangely childlike face and to many of us it’s unsettling. For many of us, the beard is the only way we can see our dads in the mirror.
I was alive and aware in the 80's and nobody thought dudes with mullets were edgy, most people made fun of them behind their backs. It was just a stupid trend back then that everyone thought was cringe. The modern mullet at least looks much better.
First I really like your essay. As a 40+ millennial, I remember when “ironic” entered the mainstream lexicon. It was by rich hipsters who were doing anything and everything to be cool. But it wasn’t genuine. It was a half assed attempt at taking the piss out of whatever they were talking about. Overtime, it turned into brands and consumerism. The irony is, “ironic” was not even being used properly. We are like parrots with a dictionary. Children in the family wardrobe. No sense of identity or feet to plant on the ground. I really think you nailed the insincerity. If I might add, shallow and not genuine. Good job on the essay young man.
As a Gen-Xer.....we're not boomers. Those are our parents....the ones born in the baby boom. We are the kids who grew up in the 70s and 80s, were latch key kids, grew our hair long or in mullets...without the irony. @TheCrapOnYourStrapOn Again, these problems seem more like a human problem, than a generation problem. What you're describing also suits boomers and genz completely.

@TheCrapOnYourStrapOn I guess we just agree to disagree then.

---------------
Maybe I differ from my generation peers.
"You can please some people some of the time, but you can't please all people all the time." -Abraham Lincoln
So just be yourself because no matter what you do or look like, someone is gonna hate on you or make commentary. You can cure frickin' cancer and someone somewhere for some reason will criticize you for it. It is what it is. Best you can do is accept this is how the world and people are like.

Bro a hater frfr on god
While it is cringe, it isn't as nearly as cringe as gen Z's obsession with looksmaxxing or "escaping the matrix and becoming rich" wanna be's. What's up with this narcissism culture, it's always about looks/money, other people admiring you for simply existing, mogging and showing how much better you have it. Guys really get rejected by a girl once and make it their whole personality how the world only cares about looks and how unfair it is and their life goal is to get as much laid as possible, by going on a lone sigma male villain arc and then wonder why they have no friends or genuine connections. Don't get me started on "mogging", just pure antisocial behaviour. People used to sacrifice themselves for the greater good of their communities, for other people but now the only thing that matters to them is "ME". "I have to mog and be better than others!", "I have to be as rich as possible to look down on brokies!", "I have to have the highest body count to show how much of a Chad I am!" What noble things have they done, other than simply being born lucky?
I don't see how escaping the jewish system/matrix and improving yourself is a bad thing. Maybe some are a bit too autistic about it but it's generaly a good thing.
@@beastvicious8672 Escaping the matrix by diving straight in the rat race and making money sole purpose of your life is ironic. Self improvement is mostly alright but kinda meaningless, cold showers, meditation and reading books are just some good habits, they won't change your life or cure social anxiety if you have one for example.
@@slot0000 There's several ways to escape the matrix. Don't consume what they want you to. Meaning left-wing garbage and bad diet. Then earn money and support things that goes against the system. Have a wife and kids, set an example. Don't be afraid to say jews run the government. Becouse if people aren't aware of who's doing it then nothing will change.
Cold showers increase will power. Getting you used to do things you don't want to. Meditation i don't really know, maybe good if you're really stressed. Reading tends to make you smarter and increase your vocabulary. Depending on what you read of course.
@@slot0000 aaaand my comment was censored. If that doesn't prove that fighting "the matrix" is important then idk what does. Eventually it's gonna be you and they wont stop at just censorship.
@@beastvicious8672 The whole "matrix" thing is mostly fearmongering by Andrew Tate to manipulate you to buy his course and "escape the matrix". His business is literally to make people insecure over his lifestyle and then sell it.

Working in an industry to get a better understanding of the market and the solutions it needs, networking, achieving results, that's hard.

Same - 38, but looking like 30-32, yet very strong with masculine energy. I rather see more weak guys in the younger generations. They pose as "gangsta" while most of those broccoli soy boys never truly struggled in life.
@@HCforLife1 How can you judge anyone solely by their looks? You have no idea about their life, or who they really are, what is in their heart and mind, you can't see what mental abuse, or deprivation someone has been through just by looks either.
Basically what is wrong with you and the dude this video is; you care too much about what others think of you and how other people look which is a big sign of pettiness and insecurity.
It's due to suppressed masculinity. Millennial men were constantly preached that their regular thoughts and desires were evil from a young age.
Millennials don't look like this. It's Gen Z. The people you showed in the thumbnail have Gen Z audience so they end up becoming like Gen Z. The average millennial in the real world sport an undercut and a beard.
The average millennial isn’t a content creator who is chronically online and play video games all day to look like that. Those are exceptions.

A bit of a fail video. Most of his takes are good
The millennial dudes with conventional haircuts and an unkempt beard, or the curly hair mullet with a mustache remind me of those memes where a girl is saying "You'll never find another girl like me" and the accompanying picture is of a group of girls who are all wearing Keds, Clamdigger jeans, and identical looking shirts.
Im a older millennial and i cant stand the insincerity of my generation. But grew up with Gen X siblings
They all have the same political opinnon on top of that, and are probably atheist most of the time. i think that is a very important thing that you have not mentioned

Millennials: *THE GAYEST GENERATION*
Depends who. I am 38 years old. Strong AF. Not politically correct. Although I see those woke patterns more prevalent in generation of 30-35 years old.
The gayest is the youngest one to me. The broccoli paper guys IMHO.
That's Gen-Z. They forge their identity around it.

Why do all gen z look exactly like you?
I was alive and aware in the 80's and nobody thought dudes with mullets were edgy, most people made fun of them behind their backs. It was just a stupid trend back then that everyone thought was cringe. The modern mullet at least looks much better.

You shouldn't throw stones from a glass house.
This video has given me a lot to think about for myself. Especially the standing up for others part.
As a Gen-Xer.....we're not boomers. Those are our parents....the ones born in the baby boom. We are the kids who grew up in the 70s and 80s, were latch key kids, grew our hair long or in mullets...without the irony. And we were never home, always out playing, climbing trees, riding bikes, exploring the local woods, swimming at the local pool or lake and terrorizing the neighborhood.
Your generation practically invented sarcasm.
You had people like Darlene Conner, Angela Chase, Jeanine Garofalo, and Daria.
Y’all were the poster children for jaded disaffected youth.
What do you mean “without the irony”? Our generation got it from you guys.
49 year old here, we often get described as boomers solely because we are masculine and don’t lean left.
Your Generation Are as delusional as boomers
@@mechanesthesia Not when we were kids, there was no awareness of being ironic. I was referencing growing up with our hair styles and apparel choices. I'm assuming you're either a Millenial or Gen Z...and the people you referenced weren't in my circle of influencers I was too busy having fun and those characters/ actors were written by, for the most part .....boomers! ......learn to read and then interpret. But wait, you can't.....so kid, go climb a tree or ride a bike. ....sarcasm......😎..you're too self aware! Lol!
Oh, one last thing. We didn't practically invent sarcasm.....that's imbued in American culture. Go watch any cinema from the 30s, 40s etc. The dialog is just brimming with it. Characters constantly chide and mock each other....it's American as apple pie and a kick in the nuts.
The mullet died around 1986, when the Beastie Boys released License to Ill. Gen x here. It was like an inside joke, because the grand majority of the USA looked cornball with mullets, listening to hair bands even after Cobain offed himself. This is something I always saw whenever I travelled.
