- This my go at a totally practical cooler radio. All the modifications are to the top only so the rest can function as a perfectly good traditional cooler. Solar panel for those extended plays. Interior LED lighting.
I would build one with one of these with a vhf radio and extra batteries to run lights for my kayak

Because you don't have any metal like an a car, a regular antenna is not going to be properly grounded and you need a marine antenna that has a ground plane in it. Try this one from Amazon

That's awesome.
i like the fact that its clean, but the point of a cooler system is to jam to your music.. if you still use the cooler for your drinks your just tying to mess up your nice speakers
I guess my goal was a little different. I wanted one thing I could drag down to the beach that would carry my cold drinks and provide music. The speakers are for wake board speakers so they are splash resistant and so far have held up well.
The point of a COOLER is exactly that. There are several Bluetooth speakers you can buy. I want my radio cooler to hold beverages.
This is a real clean setup. I am building mine right now just using an old car stereo and a couple of 6 1/2 speakers. I am trying to figure out which battery to use and I like your idea. I just wanted to know what your total run time was on that pack without the solar panel?
Not as long as I hoped. It will run for about 2 hours at a fairly high volume. Maybe 4 at a low background volume.
I thought it was awesome until I saw the power supply 3:12. Unfortunately the battery is what limits the potential of all cooler radios.
+Trevor Vampran Yes. It won't run all day at high volume with that. If I had two or three of them I could swap out and keep running. Or maybe I'll find something like a electric bike battery with higher capacity. I think lithium Ion is the best way to keep size and weight down while getting the amp hours up.
WIth your set up its hard to get a battery that is installed on the outside.
Is it water resistant after the mods?
Yes. the speakers are wake board speakers intended for boats and they are water resistant. The radio is a marine radio as well. I do get some condensation not the radio display over night because it is so cold inside with ice/drinks. but it seems to work just fine.
