'The Last Of Us HBO' Casting is Horrible

- The Last of Us HBO tv series will air on January 14th 2023, setting up a whole new hype that Naughty Dog has set with their mind blowing, tear jacking, emotional rollercoaster ride of a game The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2 which is now setting the phase to tlou tv show. Now this is a video discussing my personal take on what I feel about the casting which to be honest is amazing except the main protagonists of the show Joel and Ellie who are played by Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal who are none the less amazing actors and actresses, but the question arises when its a video game adaptation which fails to capture the characters and portrait it according to the one's from the game. It is just a personal choice of mine to have characters that can pull of in both looks and performance simultaniously with the original characters from TLOU game to TLOU HBO Season 1 & more.

It’s incredible how much people consider good casting as “oh yeah they look the same as the adaptation”. It’s almost like an actor has to do something else….oh yeah act.
There are plenty of great actors that more accurately represent these characters Visually. I don’t think they tried to cast them accurately.

Yeah that's just your opinion, clearly not everyone feels that way.
An actor being visually close to the character is important in my eyes. Take the film about Marilyn Monroe, pick someone who looked nothing like her and no matter how good an actor she was she'd struggle to pull it off. But of course you still need to pick a good actor.
As for TLOU, Bella Ramsey although she may have been directed that way initially played Ellie too hard and streetwise, which she certainly wasn't in the game.
Thankfully in the last two episodes we've seen a more vulnerable, playful side which is more like the character in the game.
That vulnerable side is important because it's what Joel eventually reacts to and the need to protect her.
Incredible, isn't it? To be so...confident, yet wrong.

So now that we've had two episodes, how does everyone feel? Personally, I went into the show with low expectations, and as a longtime fan of the games, I'm amazed by the level of effort that has gone into this show. HBO paid attention, pulled out all the stops, and it has paid off: ratings were the 2nd largest of all time for HBO (only 2nd to Game of Thrones), and the ratings actually increased for episode 2! We'll be seeing a lot more of this incredible story.

Seeing Bella Ramsey just didn't do it for me. It didn't remind me of the Ellie that game players now and love. I guess HBO is appealing to the masses and not a certain demographic.

Casting actors who look the video game characters does not mean they’re the right person for the role. it’s simple, Neil specifically said he wanted to create a story that would work whether they kept Ellie & Joel as the main characters or switch them out for others. Looks shouldn’t be your main focus when you KNOW the story & how it ends. This is ridiculous.

Pedro does a good job but Bella Ramsey is just stale and cringe, her readings feel like something I would expect to hear in a hallmark or sci fi original.
After the first few minutes of Episode 3, I'm done with the show completely.
It's not terribly bad, but not great either. Feels like a walking dead ripoff for teens.
I can definitely expect a more similar actor playing Ellie. As for pedro, I am content with his casting. But Ellie's casting is just nah, not only is she not similar to her she is not even pretty to look at.

The game is not iconic and loved because of the way the characters looked. It is those things because of how the story and characters made you feel while playing it. In my opinion, how the actors look matters far less than the way they portray the characters and how they make me feel. Having watched the first episode, I am very happy with what the cast and crew of The Last of Us show has created.
Yeah they are very passionate in the show at least, I like how they want to be like the old game but bring something new to it as well with the world and characters.

Pedro Pascal keeps Star Wars alive... and TLOUS series is probably the most watched ever in the history... and in large part is due to the work of Pedro Pascal.

I love the games and Pedro is great as Joel, pretty much nails it I would say. I really don't see how there can be any issue there. In terms of Ellie, the Ellie of the first game cannot exist - it's the voice of a grown woman - where as Bella looks and sounds like the teenager she is meant to be. They have tweaked Ellies personality a bit in show, - probably to give a bit of contrast.
Bella's performance is bad.
I can name half a dozen YA actresses who can do a better job. Ramsey can barely do an american accent.

The biggest problem I have with the casting is Bella Ramsey. I think she is an incredible actress, but she doesn’t remotely look or sound like Ellie at all.
How they look and sound doesn't matter. Sure, it shouldn't stray too far from the source material, but you shouldn't expect the characters in the show to look and sound exactly like the game. That's expecting too much. The chances of finding an actor who looks and sounds like the character as well as being able to properly portray that character is rare. I'd rather it be an actor who doesn't resemble the character looks wise, but be able to portray the characters emotions, mannerisms, reasoning, thoughts, etc more closely to the game.
She sometimes kinda sounds like ellie imo, but in terms of physical appearance I just hate that hbo didn't go with a more accurate representation of the Ellie the fans have come to love. I mean, it's not like you're gonna piss off GoT fans for not including those actors so from a consumers standpoint I can't see why they wouldn't just cast more accurate actors and actresses for this series unless the only other options were people that look more alike but are bad actors, which is not the case.

@@Frogman519 except there are others that were 'qualified' for the job. Kaitlyn dever and ellen page would've both been excellent for the role of Ellie. Even more for Joel: Hugh Jackman, gerard butler, nikolaj coster. And that's beside the fact that casting for such young actors and actresses isn't even entirely dependent on their acting. Yeah it's a big part of it and i'm not trying to bring Bella Ramsey down, but the acting gap between young actors amongst each other and old actors should obviously be alot different due to experience.
And ofcourse the likeness to the characters in the source material matters to a certain degree. The very foundation of The Last Of Us is made up of 3 things; character looks / dialogue, character personality and storytelling. Getting 1/3 wrong due to lazy casting because HBO couldn't be bothered to look for actors outside of their GoT contacts list is just annoying to me.

If the only problem with Sarah being cast is her skin color which is the only critique he mentions this is very problematic. She is in the show/game for only the opening and her ethnicity has NOTHING to do or any impact on the story or the characters or anything. It depends on whether the budget is enough to support the talent fees of all the A-Listers you mentioned. TV productions would usually have one bankable star in it. Also, if the actors/actresses weren't interested and didn't audition they wouldn't get the part. I didn't play the game so the story and the plot would be more important to me than what the characters look like .

While Pedro's performance is great and his acting skills are awesome, Bella's acting is pretty bad. She's bland, shows no emotions most of time, no talent found.

The thing that's bugging me is that the actor who plays Ellie, Bella, is a bit too rough, and doesn't show the emotions Ellie did in the game. It's not that I think she looks bad, but she does look rougher and not as empathic as the original Ellie does, which really is a nice contrast in the game. In the game, Ellie looks innocent and empathetic and young, but she's a total badass. The contrast gives her character a lot of depth. Bella already looks rough, so there isn't much of a contrast. Also, Bella is, in my opinion, too aggressive. She doesn't portray the empathetic side of Ellie. Ellie is not aggressive, she is playful and badass when she has to be, but she's not a bitch, she's not bratty, she's not mean and she's not aggressive in speech (or action) unless she has to be. She just knows how to joke around and banter in her own sarcastic way. I feel like Bella makes her out to be aggressive and bratty instead of sarcastic, which I don't like at all. She doesn't really portray her silliness in the way I hoped to see either. It doesn't feel like Ellie at all. I like how Joel's portrayed though, so far. And the girl who played Sarah was amazing.

Personally, I dislike how they casted Bella as the actress for Ellie. Shes a phenomenal actress really! But I honestly just wished that they hired another good actress that actually looks a bit more like in-game Ellie. The other actors actually look similar to the in-game characters, especially Marlene and Joel. Looks obviously don't matter or change anything, but I just would've liked that they hired people that actually look like the characters to represent some accuracy.

Sure they could have done better with an actor who really looks like ellie. But bella's acting is amazing so its not really a big deal, for me at least. I'd take a good portrayal and acting of characters any day
If you complain about the casting based on how similar actors look or don't look, I think you should take a step back and realise you have no idea what you're talking about. You go for the actor who can best portray their character and not one who looks like the character in the game (hint hint, this is a tv show aimed at everyone, not just obsessed gamers who will nitpick every irrelevant detail). This show has a big budget and almost certainly went through dozens of options for each main character before settling on someone they tought was the best person for the job. By making videos on how "horrible" the casting is, you are downplaying a ton of work that went into the casting, and you're also childishly playing "spot the differences" and basing huge decisions on your surface level knowledge about something.

My guy thinks its as simple as picking names for characters and forgetting they have commitments to other shows/movies as well as pricing and egos.
I was thinking the same, probably some actors were offered the roles, some might declined, have already commitments dor another role or not selected during the process of casting.
If that’s so the show doesn’t need to be made at all. The series is already excellent as it is.

I personally think the casting is great. I find too many focused on physical appearance and how that would be the most important thing. Yes having some kind of likness to the orginal characters does help but the important thing is getting the principal and authencity of the characters right.
OK going beyond appearance...looking a principles and authenticity, how does super outspoken liberal, Latin decent, foreign accented Pedro Pascal relate to the principles of a gun owning, blue collar white guy from Texas, who loves twangy blues country?....Its a terrible fit.

Bella’s acting is forced, overly aggressive and over the top imo. When you can tell an actor is reading a scrip, not a good thing. Shame they made her not play the games to get a good feel for the character, seeing as she’s the least experience actor out of the cast.

I think Pedro has it down to near perfection. Six episodes in and I still can't really get around to Bella. It's not that she's terrible, but I feel as if she's probably lacking a few things. So far it's kind of just been her facial expressions for me, like a bratty kid who doesn't get their way. Ellie naturally had that sarcastic but funny personality, you always wanted her around. Bella's take on the character is less playful, more annoying. Not the kind of character I want on my screen 24/7 and most times, I'll find myself wishing it had just been Joel alone.

Bella has been recognized as one as the most talented young actresses. She was a scene stealer in GoT even when she was with some pretty big names. Like, they didn't pick her up off the street. Ellie is a complicated role to play, and they needed a dynamic actress that can command the room. Bella is the perfect fit for this role.

1 episode in, and their "relationship" was only the last half hour or so of the episode. The potential for greatness is certainly there. Full disclosure: I haven't played the game, but was very much into the episode. Sarah had a small part, but it still managed to have an effect on me. Movies, shows, or games with lousy character development won't do that.

Bella Ramsey is definitely not Asian… she’s English. TERRIBLE takes all around tbh. HBO’s take on TLOU has been pretty great. Yes it’s an ADAPTATION of the game, but adding their own little spins on different scenes from the game make it great in its own way. And the actors that play the characters were casted to near perfection.

Bella and her portrayal is awful. The adult actors are better, but Joel, Tess and especially Bill were all rewritten to be a bunch of softies and nice folks, and nothing like their game counterparts.
The fact that you made this video before the show even started tells me everything I need to know. Characters are not defined by their looks. Pedro and Bella are talented actors that fit right into the role of Joel and Ellie, and I say this as someone who has watched 5 episodes before making any judgments. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion on the matter, but I feel that your judgment regarding the casting has been made in bad faith. Not impressed.
Edit: I also think its worth mentioning that Troy (the guy who voices Joel) talked about his audition process and said that he felt very insecure going into it because he was surrounded by guys that looked just like Joel and he felt very out of place. However, when he finally went into the audition, he had great chemistry with Ashley and embodied Joel perfectly. His looks did not matter at all, and that's the way it should be.
