      Hey Joey! I am a 15 year old who wants to become a doctor, but first I want to become an RN just incase I regret my decision. Did you take 4 years of bio bachelors degree and then moved on to 4 years of Medical, or did you go to medical school right after your NCLEX.

    Hi Lily, first and foremost congratulations on your acceptance into medical school. I am a new registered nurse with an ADN currently looking for an RN to BSN program with the ultimate goal of becoming an MD. I can personally say taking the nontraditional route is a bit daunting considering Nursing programs do not prepare us with the core science education needed for medical school. However, I cannot help but to feel that having the nursing background prior to medical school benefits us tremendously in many ways and in part I hope it allows for my application to stand out even if it is just a bit more. I am currently considering WGU as it is a fast paced RN to BSN and being almost 28 next month, well lets just say there is no time to waste. Going into my nursing program I had a 3.9 gpa but as we all now know, nursing school can hinder your gpa tremendously as these courses are weighed heavily. Once I have my BSN, I plan on enrolling into a post-bacc program that will allow me to boost my current science gpa (3.3) and overall prepare me for the MCAT. It is really good to see another RN choosing the path of becoming a physician despite societal factors and all the discouraging bs that usually follows such decision. My question to you is, despite the fact that I am already a non-traditional pre-med student, what can I do to make my application stand out aside from a high gpa and or MCAT results?

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  4 года назад +9

      Horacio, thank you for watching my video and the congrats! The great thing about choosing the RN route is that it will automatically give you the direct patient care experience that will make your application stand out. By the time I applied, I had over 10,000 hours of direct patient care experience, of course you don't need that much but it already puts you ahead. Nursing also gives you access to physicians - introduce yourself to them, let them know you are looking to apply to medical school, they were the most supportive population for me, often offering to let my shadow and writing outstanding letters of recommendations for me.
      I am thinking about making a video about this, but something that you can work on in the coming years is compile a document of the most moving situations you've had during patient encounters - when it comes time to write up your personal statement for medical school, you will have anecdotal examples of compassion, empathy, leadership etc. I spent countless hours refining my essay, and over 10 people helped me edit it.
      The other thing is to reflect on what truly matters to you, especially if it is not healthcare related, and spend time developing that. Medical schools appreciate a dynamic person. Almost everything you do, as long as you do it with authenticity, you can tie back to how it will make you a successful physician. For instance, I love yoga, plant-based cooking, trail running, and global volunteerism - I was able to take all my life experiences in these areas and create a strong application because it shows that I am not just academically ready, but also that I am relatable and interesting in my day to day life.
      It's been said before, but cannot be stressed enough, show rather than tell the admissions committee who you are and why you will be a great physician.
      Good luck!

      LPN considering MD as well in emergency medicine….this inspired me to just be true to myself and what I want. I considered doing an F-ENP program after BSN, but I think I am better off just bridging to an ADN, becoming an RN, and working full time while I knock out pre-med stuff then taking my MCAT and applying. We DO miss 100% of the chances we don’t take….this is so true!

      Thank you for your comment! I took advantage of my hospital's RN position flexibility. We have full-time RN positions and also staffing positions where you work a minimum of 4 shifts/week up to full-time. I took my MCAT during the month of May. I started looking at MCAT material 6 months before around December, then 3 months before my MCAT, I switched from my full-time RN position to the staffing position and worked 4 shifts a month for 3 months, studied hard for 3 months, took my MCAT, and ended up staying in that staffing position until I started medical school. I would definitely look around your area or institutions for flexible RN positions if you need to for MCAT studying. When I worked 3 shifts per week, I took labs on the 2 days I had off. When I couldn't find the labs that I needed, I took online courses to fulfill my lab requirement. Hope that helps!

I have my BSN at this university and I'm thinking of reapplying as non-degree seeking and take my prereq there. However, I feel that taking them at a community college will be cheaper and offer more flexibility.

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 года назад +2

      I suggest looking at the requirements of the specific school you want to apply to - In preparing my applications, I saw that most schools accept community college credits. What's more important is that all your credits are from an accredited institution. Taking my courses from a community college allowed me to pay for it all out-of-pocket and do it while I was working full time! I was never asked about my community college courses during interviews. I am also going to my state school in AZ, so not a top tier ivy-league school so I cannot speak for those schools!

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 года назад +1

      That is great question, bedside nursing qualifies as clinical hours/healthcare experience. It does not qualify as physician shadowing - this is something you need to coordinate with a physician which should be easier since you work with them! Just ask one or two if you can shadow them once a week for several weeks and you should be good to go. I had research experience as a cardiac research nurse - I only coordinated studies and never actually conducted research or published papers. Now that I am in medical school, I've already written 3 abstracts! I love medical school cause it opens so many doors and opportunities!!

      Medical school prerequisites require general biology, gen Chem, organic chem, physics, and biochem. A lot of the classes we took were either intro to bio or intro to chemistry. Medical schools require general classes and usually are a year long with the exception of physics.

    Godspeed on your journey to MD but what u missing is that NURSING n MEDICAL SCHOOL approach patient care differently. Yes u will increase ur earning power but have u thought about satisfaction? I am NP in a primary care and I would you tell there is nothing in "medical school" that i am missing. The impact i am making in my patients health far exceeds what some "MD" are making.

      Hi Jess, I am using this platform to share the tips that I found super helpful when I was applying and transitioning from RN to MD. I never found that knowing other people's MCAT scores helped me but I will consider sharing it in a future video. In the meantime, you can rest assured that I did not do stellar on the MCAT and in fact totally bombed the CARS section, yet I still received 10 DO school interview and got an accepted into an MD school that I interviewed. My MCAT was a small part of my application because of my background. I know that the rest of my application pulled the weight of my average stats.

    why not become an NP? just genuinely curious as a pre-nursing student :)

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 года назад +1

      There are many reasons I didn’t choose to go NP including but not limited to: I wanted full autonomy and to be the expert in my field - MD training involves 4 year med school plus residency which equates to 15,000 hours clinical training vs 500 hours of clinical training which is the minimum for an NP.
      I wanted the option to do research and surgery - opportunities that the MD route would give me.
      It also didn’t sit well with me that I could get into an online NP school next week if I wanted to, and become a primary provider for someone within 1-2 years. I just felt that the discrepancy in NP education was confusing and I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on it and feel unprepared on the other side.
      MD route also has given me a HUGE amount of opportunities that no online NP school could have ever given me. I don’t regret it one bit.
      YMMV but these are some of my reasons.

    They're not excuses. They are valid reasons. They and you already have a license in the health professions that requires dedication and time. Can you honestly say you were the best nurse you could be while doing your MD prereqs? I doubt it. People have families and need to provide for their kids and pay the bills. Going to medical school doesn't allow for a job on the side and is a debt burden especially for older nontrads who might have the thrice added weight of age. Everything slows down with age. You probably don't have a family, you're not that old and you were able to make it through the gauntlet that is premed. Thats not an easy road by any means thus its not common.

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 года назад +4

      I appreciate your comment, however, you bring up many of the misconceptions of the non-grad journey.
      My channel is specifically geared towards RNs who want to go into medical school, as such, this population is typically in a position where they can provide for their family and still go to school. No, I do not have kids but MANY of my nursing colleagues had families, young children and were in school for pre-med, NP and CRNA pre-reqs so its definitely possible to work and go to school with a family. Is it easy? NO, I am not claiming it will easy. I am not here to minimize the challenge of pre-med life and medical school, I specifically mention that it won’t be easy. No one should take on this journey thinking it will be easy but I am here to share that it is POSSIBLE. And no I did not compromise my position as an RN, in fact, I was awarded for my dedication with promotion and raises as a nurse while doing pre-reqs. I was the charge nurse for my unit for several years. By doing my pre-reqs 1 course a semester, I never felt burdened by taking classes on my 4 days off I had during the week. I had plenty of time to work hard as an RN, complete my courses, and have free time on top of that. I have many anecdotes that have inspired me including the fact that I went to nursing school with someone who was 58 years old and graduated at 60. I have been taught by physicians who finished medical school in their 50s. People my age use the age excuse often and I am not even the oldest person in my class by far! Debt is also something people bring up because they don’t know how medical school is funded (I was clueless about this) but schools give out tuition scholarships, my school offered me one for a stellar secondary statement essay (along with a quarter of the students in my class). Another quarter of my class has their tuition funded because they want to go into primary care. The other half have loans that cover their tuition and COL but still there are many scholarships available to them. There are more options than you think. I agree that it’s not a common road because it’s not easy. Great things don’t come easy though.
