I noticed the same thing. SO, I am considering making a video on it because I think I have just about nailed the sound. Here is my recording of the solo (no mixing or harmonies, just one track): drive.google.com/file/d/1z3h7UgM6fW7Elp0oN3Bz4qCBe7K5LcjZ/view?usp=sharing I recorded the solo with 3 tracks, 3 different takes (left, right, and harmony track in the middle) on another file but it didn't sound right to me so I'm just putting this single track on a file. Also I forgot to turn up the input volume on my mic to give it that nasty mic distortion that the recording has. THis is what I have so far./
Tom's Les Paul only had a P90 in the neck position. And that was only one of his Goldtop Les Pauls that had that P90 (along with a DiMarzio Super Distortion). The other one I've seen has DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups. Open coils on all DiMarzios. Open coil humbuckers are slightly more treble-y than covered ones.
3:25 the 800 Hz band should be cranked all the way up to get a more on-the-spot tone. In fact, the Boston guitar sound is pretty thin and honky, tbh. The actual settings (based on the Tom's blue 6-band EQ) are roughly as follows: 100 and 200 Hz are a little bit attenuated, 400 Hz is mid-cranked up, 800 Hz is all the way up!, 1.6 kHz is as attenuated as 100 and 200 Hz, and 3.2 kHz is the same as 400 Hz. As there are no 6.4 kHz nor Level controls on the 6-band EQ, you can set them to taste. In particular, the Level control could work nicely as a booster, if you need more gain.
I kept waiting for them to green screen some” flying over alien landscapes” behind him. 🤘🏽 Boston is awesome live! Remember live shows? How’s the arm doing Sir?
New gear days are energizing, dont even gotta be expensive even just new strin... oh wait you play bass ...so even strings are expensive, maybe that’s why so many bassist go DI? Cause you can’t buy pedals n doo dads and things bobs cause strings cost as much as a budget pedal!
Wah pedal -> Tube Screamer -> delay (echoplex I'm pretty sure, effects loop or in front of amp e.g. Catalinbread belle epoch) -> Amp Early UFO Schenker moved the wah pedal like a filter. Early MSG he started using Cocked wah.
My dear old Zoom GFX8 has an original patch bank selection named “Boston”, always worth a shortcut! I remember seeing the Rockman demos when they were doing the initial marketing that were closed with MTaF play outs.
Zooms where the ultimate love/hate pedal for me in the 90s. Part of me recoiled in horror at how digital they sounded. However, for whatever reason they sat in the mix so well and made for a fucken great live rig.
You totally sold me the Apocalypse and I am really happy with it 😁 so in exchange Only For the Weak from In Flame or anything on Clayman would do. Thanx 🙌🏻 awesome videos and playing coming close to our Andertons friends 😜
On the live song one guitar is octaving Sholz OR he using an octave pedal or chorus? I use the lightest Fender pick you can get for the slide. It chews picks up FAST so always have a few if your on the road!!
"Well, I'm gonna use a COMPLETELY different kind of pickup, BUT this is how to reproduce that sound as closely as possible..." Really, hoss? You couldn't get a guitar with P-90s? If you're gonna use a COMPLETELY different pickup, what difference does ANY of the rest make, LoL?
I don't want to be rude or something, but I came here for riffs, not for talking. I will take them, if I need lessons. Even if you talking true, yt ain't working this way. Best for u!
To this point I have not heard anyone including tom schultz reproduce the guitar tone on the original recording
Nope.
Nitpicky, but Scholz not Schultz.

Great as always! How about some UFO? Rock bottom would be awesome :)

Dude you need to cover Bleed-Meshuggah, I know you want to! ;)
Awsome as usual
Im not very familiar with original sound, but what you have achieved here is soooo goood. Like, what you expect from Les Paul Marshall combo.
I really like this format 🤟
That was my favourite song to play when i started 4 years ago💪
Great! Tom used a Super Distortion in the bridge, tho

He also used p90s in bridge. See live performance video of more than a feeling

Doesn’t sound like Tom Scholz. At all! Try again
