They give you basic exercises and the cadence and you learn it beforehand. Auditions typically take place the Sunday before band camp starts. You play as both a line and they rotate you around on other instruments and in the afternoon you audition by yourself on whichever drum is your first choice.
@LukeSnyderMusic I never do any behind the drum set, these are also from my high school drum line days. I'm realizing more and more that stick tricks are becoming almost as important to the crowd as the actual playing.
My first exposure to this trick called the "Anaheim Toss" was way back in 1977. I played in the Alabama All-State Band and I saw a guy playing around before rehearsal and I knew I just had to learn this trick. Scott may have renamed it the Spida Toss. Not sure.
word! I got a double major in Psych in German...who are you working under? I worked under Dr. Holt. Dr. Langston and Dr. Bauer on some different things. Small world.
Yeah I thought they were, since they wear the hats and and stuff. I wanted to be in a band that was a bit more serious about it but I'm not sure if I'd have time. So how did you try out, was it like a a private audition or did they have everyone play and pick and choose who they wanted?
Hey since I'm a freshman in high school and im playing center snare in our marching band, I don't really know any cool stuff so can you make a vid on like basic tricks that still look cool? I'm talking like some of the first tricks youve learned on the snare drum... That would be awesome, so at least consider it please
A couple colleges like UT usually have freshman play the cymbals, do they do that is it whatever your good at playing and want to play? I don't mean to bug you about all this stuff their just questions iv'e wanted to ask but I didn't know who to ask
Yeah. They're a very light hearted marching program as far as most colleges go. There's a really good percussion program here, too. I just don't have the time to be in Band of Blue anymore.
@milesmetkodrums27 Thats the thing, I never do stick tricks, haha. I've been working on a couple recently though, it'll happen eventually. Gotta give the crowd something to talk about, right? :D
Eh. I feel like there are a lot of videos on the basic tricks. Is there a specific trick you would like to see? If there's not a good video of it on RUclips I might be able to incorporate it into my next video on stick tricks.
If you audition on something and you're not quite cutting it, they won't let you stay on that instrument, but they're not going to just put you on cymbals just because you're a freshman. The best players get the best spots, regardless of age.

The toss is the same as the toss that is covered at the start of the video. You go straight into it after six 16th notes (or one cycle of the spider).

Nice T Shirt man! I played snare at MT back in the day.

@zadrakus Thanks for your comment. I was trying to be thorough but at the same time not take too much time on each trick.

@lozerlykool Thanks for the feedback. A lot of the tricks on RUclips are really basic so I did this one to show off some harder ones.
