It's a story I have mentioned before and once covered in a video a few years ago, albeit not to this depth or accuracy. It's one of the city of Portland's greatest tragedies and yet you seldom ever see it mentioned by anyone. On March 13, 1911, on her fifth birthday, Barbara Holzman was sent from her home in North Portland to pick up some food at a local meat market, a trip she would never return from. She would be found the following morning in a small Albina rooming house by the place's landlady, Bertha Nelson, the only true witness in the whole case. Barbara had been brutally murdered and left buried under the bedding in one of the rooms by a middle-aged man who checked the room out.
To this day, more than 110 years later, the mystery of who this man was has never been determined, despite there being many suspects over a several year period. In this video I tell Barbara's story, as well as the frustrating investigation that followed. I conclude matters by discussing the lingering questions on this case as far as what I think likely happened and who I feel was potentially responsible.

It's incredible how much information you were able to dig up for such an old case. Great job Steve!

Have you ever considered doing a series on Portland hauntings? With so many old apartment buildings, especially in NW/SW Portland, there must be some good ones. I would love to hear about the hauntings along with the haunted buildings history.

Hey Steve, I think you would be a very interesting regular segment in the Columbian newspaper. Think of all the old articles you could get your hands on. The history of this area (Oregon, Washington) is just crazy and so intetesting. Thanks for doing this.

This muder is still talked about among my family today. She was my Grandpa's older sister.

I'm a local historian, but I mostly do research on assignment. You've got me keeping a whole separate set of files on the darker side of our community.

Was drugs and alcohol abuse common in those days as well in Portland? Even back then evilness, lawlessness was lurking.. so sad 😢

A lot of criminals came there for a new life, there were dockyard jobs and no questions asked labor. If the Shanghai Tunnels are still there, they're a landmark to the kidnapping of so many men for their money, lives or labor. The way the local Natives were um dealt with was particularly evil, and people of African descent were lynched regularly for being on the wrong side of town til the 1980s. So yes, it has

So commendable of Ms Nelson to hesitate to err in a capital murder case. Sucn a shame there were no other ways to track down the culprit.

It was not until 1892 that fingerprints were used to solve a crime. By 1903, America had begun using fingerprints.
