My son visited Iceland a few years back and gave me a novel about this case as a present on his return. It's called 'Burial Rites' by Hannah Kent. Highly recommended.
I find it hypocritical that Agnes was judged for having an intimate relationship with the victim while he, himself, and his married lover were spared that same judgement. Poor Agnes never stood a chance.
That's the way things were, at least up until the World Wars... Sexual equality in relationships didn't really start to become a thing until the 1960s and The Pill.
I guess my point was more about the inequality between affluent people and the poor. That man's well to do married lover had two of his children yet was not judged.
It was interesting that this case was recently re-tried and that Agnes (posthumously) was spared the death penalty, but I'm not convinced that the accused trio had anything to do with the murders. The original prosecution built a death penalty case based on rumors and hearsay -- but no actual proof or evidence. They speculated that Agnes and the maid may have participated in the murders out of jealousy. Yet, there was no proof or evidence of that having been the case. They contended that the young man took part in the murders because he liked the maid and was jealous of her involvement with Natan, but, once again, they had no proof of this. Which means the three were punished or beheaded based solely on conjecture.
Well said...I am no legal analyst, but something just wasn't ringing true and I found myself thinking how unjust this is, how could they have even tried them? A provocative tale, thank you BC- as always, you make Mondays merciful.
I feel the same way you do. People have done far worse with proof and their lives were spared. Unfortunately, there’s no way to right the wrongs of the past.💔
To those presumptuous commenters who think they know more about the truth of this case after watching a 15 min video than an entire panel of 21st C. Icelandic jurists: That the narrator did not provide evidentiary details of the trial does NOT mean there was no evidence or that the accused were innocent. In fact, the modern reenactment of the trial DID find Agnes GUILTY, though her sentence was far less severe. BTW, modern Icelandic courts are just as competent (if not more) than those herein the U.S. -- any hearsay would have been excluded.
Hello BC, was helping my mom setting the Christmas tree light, we're almost finished. This is the very first time that we're in Iceland! It's such a beautiful country.
We don't hear much about Iceland so it was interesting to hear this story. I don't suppose anyone will ever know her motivation behind helping in the murders. Thank you for another very fascinating story.
There is not even a proof that she, or the other two, were guilty. What about his married lover or her husband? They might have the same or even more motive.
Good morning This case really bothered me in my gut something tells me that she was not guilty even though they did a mock trial and they would’ve given her 14 years. I feel that the three of them were found guilty because of their social circumstance. that’s how people were looking at her and her two co-defendants. They were not going to get a fair trial, especially after that poem was put in the paper and that makes it even worse and that’s just my personal opinion. It just seems like anyone that didn’t have money would never have a fair chance at anything that they were accused of. That’s just my personal opinion. Thank you for another great story, and from Iceland 🇮🇸 I hope you have a wonderful week. Looking forward to next Monday. Bless 🙏🏽🎄☃️🎁
I got a bit excited already when I saw the Icelandic surname, nice that it actually was an Icelandic case. I'm wondering how come Skald-Rosa's husband wasn't suspected for having anything to do with the murder of her lover, especially if it was suspected/known that Nathan had fathered 2 of Skald-Rosa's children. Interesting to hear both about how the disappeared heads was found, and that they in modern days did a sort of retrial.
That's an issue I have with a lot of early cases. While there are some where there is good, clear evidence that the person who was found guilty actually did it, a lot of cases, like this one, are circumstantial - and it almost seems as if it was a case of, "Oh, well, we're fairly sure one of them did it, so if we punish all of them, we're sure to get it right."
That the narrator did not provide evidentiary detailss of the trial does not mean the accused were innocent. In fact, the modern reenactment of the trial DID find Agnes guilty, even though her sentence was far less severe.
This was a thrilling case!! Iceland seems like such a mystical place to live so I was totally enraptured as I learned so much about its past. The tragedy that occurred was horrid, of course, but it was even more stark and surreal because it took place in such an inhospitable venue. Thank you Esteemed Brief Case for another Marvellous Monday!!! There is no one else in the universe who could fill your shoes!!
What a fascinating story from a country you hear little of --- especially in this time frame. BC did another excellent presentation 👏 Blown away, by the pronunciation of the names! 👏 😢 I have to wait another week for the next. Thank you, BC
Creepy! beheadings and heads on pikes - wow! Was there ever a movie about this? Seems like good material for one. Thank you Mr. BC, and again, another Monday morning tale!!
I think there is a film about it. Agnes wasn't executed straight away and I believe she was in the custody of a family for some months before her execution. The film concentrates on this period I think. Edit, the film is called ‘Burial Rites’.
The Australian author Hannah Kent wrote a book about this case called "Burial Rites." She really researched the heck out of this case. I'd really recommend any of her books, but particularly this one.
I read the novel, Burial Rites, written by Australian author, Hanna Kent. It is about the final days of Agnes. Absolutely brilliant, so I was excited when I recognised the name in your video title.👏🏻
Nattan was a player and some women don't like that. However, I'm not convinced of the guilt of Agnes and the other two accused. There seemed to be a lack of evidence and much reliance on rumours. If his affairs of the heart were the reason for his murder, then it was especially devilish that whoever killed him had no qualms about murdering a second victim, innocent in all that. We'll never know but it was fascinating. Thank you Brief Case for another Monday morning murder mystery.
Where was the evidence that these two was guilty of the murders?? So Anges had low standards what about the woman who wrote a poem for her dead LOVER she didn't have low standards?? Another great case B.C
Unfortunately, there's a lot of cases prior to the rise of forensic science where a lot of people were found guilty of crimes just by circumstantial evidence. I can name a lot of cases dating as far back as the medieval ages where people were condemned (usually to death) without any evidence at all.
Hello BC Awesome research from Iceland including correct pronunciations Sad for the two girls esp Agnes who was executed. Finally after almost two hundred years they had a proper burial. Thanks BC.

Same country, but in Brisbane where it's just gone 22:30 Excellent episode, curious though. Is the portrait of Agnes from records kept or a dream you had? Or? For 33yrs old and having lived a hard working life, she looks stunning.
A most interesting and sad case of peasants killing landowners. I feel they were punished more for that reason than the actual murders. In any case, I'm glad some form of true justice was given to them 200 yrs later. It's too bad there weren't opportunities to get out of that small village and go live somewhere else. I am curious though about what happened to her father and the 3rd victim/criminal sent to Denmark for prison. I like the fact that you covered a case from a place I never thought about much and had no idea there were settlements in that area during that time period. Thanks BC. Happy Holidays to you.
What would have been really interesting in the retrial, is if they used the original legal rules properly applied with that evidence would death have still been the verdict.
Great retelling of this 200 year old scene , and the people so lovely looking...its like 'love's journey' has always brought us extreme pain or pleasure
This was a very intriguing case but I don't comprehend how these two people could receive the death penalty on circumstantial evidence. I believe the young teenage girl was spared the death penalty and only received penal servitude because she was seventeen. Great investigation, presentation and historical information on Iceland.
I love your work, but this one really got to me. I wonder if they happened to record that mock trial. That would be really great to see or listen to. Nice job, thanks!
Thank you for this most fascinating case. I think this is the best and most interesting case to date. It was well researched and wonderfully presented.

@@BriefCaseOfficial such a shame, but a commendation on your selection of a picture to represent her lol - she's gorgeous
Good morning BC so happy i am able to watch this quickly before work❤❤ 🙏🏼
Hope you enjoy it!
I do love your commitment to pronunciation of the names of the people discussed in these cases.
Thanks
Good morning BC from Black Diamond Alberta, interesting case especially with rhe mock trial. Have a wonderful week. 😊
Thanks, You too
Good morning Brief Case.
Morning
A most interesting and sad case of peasants killing landowners. I feel they were punished more for that reason than the actual murders. In any case, I'm glad some form of true justice was given to them 200 yrs later.
It's too bad there weren't opportunities to get out of that small village and go live somewhere else.
I am curious though about what happened to her father and the 3rd victim/criminal sent to Denmark for prison.
I like the fact that you covered a case from a place I never thought about much and had no idea there were settlements in that area during that time period.
Thanks BC. Happy Holidays to you.
Great one BC, well done, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening
Good Monday morning, Brief
Case
Morning
@BriefCaseOfficial I thought I would add a BC like pause. Love the older little known uploads you do. Please keep it up.
Icelander here , i hadn't heard about this story before it is brutal, sad and unjust, well done on the names our language is hard to pronounce 😊💜
Thankyou, I went to Iceland before I launched the video , I had a great time
What would have been really interesting in the retrial, is if they used the original legal rules properly applied with that evidence would death have still been the verdict.
Brilliant!!
Happy Monday BC
Great retelling of this 200 year old scene , and the people so lovely looking...its like 'love's journey' has always brought us extreme pain or pleasure
Thanks Cecelia
Good morning BC thank you for another great story to start my day
Thanks for listening Mary
Love stories from the 17th century and Iceland was unusual....love your voice as well
Thankyou so much
This was a very intriguing case but I don't comprehend how these two people could receive the death penalty on circumstantial evidence. I believe the young teenage girl was spared the death penalty and only received penal servitude because she was seventeen. Great investigation, presentation and historical information on Iceland.
As usual another Great case brought out for all of us to hear👍👍👍👍. Thank You for doing it 👍😎🍻✌️👋
Glad you enjoyed it
This was a fascinating story thank you
Thanks for watching :)
Really interesting case and I love that the country re-tried it.
Thanks for another great case!!
Thanks for watching
I love your work, but this one really got to me.
I wonder if they happened to record that mock trial. That would be really great to see or listen to.
Nice job, thanks!
Thank you for this most fascinating case. I think this is the best and most interesting case to date. It was well researched and wonderfully presented.
Thank you so much, that's so nice of you to say, I have no idea how a case will be received before I launch it, and less so with this one
Great story, BC. I don't know much about Iceland either. I enjoyed seeing the pictures, especially the homes built into the grassy knolls. I look forward to next weeks story. ❤🇨🇦
Thanks for watching
I have read about this case .........so glad that Brief Case decided to cover it . Any idea whether the convicted persons really looked like in these sketches ?
Good morning BC Family❤
