Hi Mel, I would not have been able to leave that beautiful coloured feather and fan lap blanket or the red Cleckheaton wool. Til I watched you I have never looked at the blankets at Op shops. Last time at a Salvos I bought for $7, a beautiful knitted lap blanket. I only crochet. It was made from Totem wool in 10 colours. She even had a note sown on the bottom saying her name, how to wash it and being made from pure Aussie wool. 🥰

I’ve done a feather and fan shawl. It’s a great beginner stitch. A good tip is to put stitch markers at the start and end of each repeat so you can easily see and check that you haven’t made any mistakes. When l finished the rectangle/squarish shawl , l seamed up each end leaving a hole to put your arms thru. I think they are called cocoon cardigans. Loving your yarniverse adventures. ❤

i am working on a monkey using a fluffy phildar yarn i have stitch markers every 10 stitches and count and recount them every row to make sure I did not drop one lol
My third ever knitting project was feather and fan baby blanket. I recommend also that you use a lifeline here and there in case you do need to rip back after a mistake.
I have used feather and fan stitch frequently but mostly for baby clothes and I did 1 jumper years ago. I can definitely tell you that once you get going, there is a rhythm to this stitch…….. maybe do a swatch to start with. It grows quickly, when I was doing baby clothes I found that before I cd say ‘flip a stitch’ I was nearly finished. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. PS, we have a donation called ‘Baby Basics’ here…… fabulous place to crochet blankets for…… AND items for newborns and the mums. UK.

I love the Thrift Shops you visit. So much crochet! Those smaller type cones look like they are for a overlocker. But those big ones 😱 I would have snapped them up to use for blending a few strands of yarn colours together. Keep making these videos. I’m shopping with you when I watch you. The "Halloween" blanket had some seed stitch in it. The blue blanket you liked is probably hand knitted. It was knit alternating stockinette rows with some garter ridges.
That stirch youre looking at around 13.40 is known here in NZ as Moss stitch. Bansically what it makes when I bugger up my rib stitch lol. So, k,p,k,p then do the same on the way back. So knit stitches on knit, amd purl on purls. Like a staggered stocking stitch. Hope that makes sense! You found some cool stuff!
There are several different ways of incorporating granny squares into making hats. I think that’s something you should try with your little bits and pieces.
Broomstick crochet is great and suprisingly easy. Naztazia has a lot of broomstick lace patterns and even published a book on it. I use a big knitting needle to do it (bought a supercheap set on ebay).

Why don't you think you can work with the fine yarns? Some people don't like to because of hand pain and others because it takes longer to get a project done. I work with all sizes and have dealt with the hand pain by changing my grip on the hook and using hooks with ergonomic handles. I have a book on microcrochet, and the author recommended slowly decreasing hook and yarn size down to quilting thread or the finer crochet cottons and silks. I am going to try it. 😊 Thanks for another thrifting video. Have fun with all that scrap yarn! I love buying that stuff at thrift stores too!

i made 2 market bags with cotton and they still stretch but they are strong, i'm now in the process of making one with the plastic insert on the bottom hoping it won't stretch as far

Buttons are a great purchase. Not only a good price for useful and beautiful buttons but they can be stitched onto things as embellishments as well. I made feather and fan wrist warmers with strips of odd buttons sewn along the top sides and they look fab. I think it shameful the salvos are getting so expensive, and their pricing is so odd. All that packaging used to individually wrap scraps of yarn and all the yarn meticulously individually priced and far more expensive than any of the blankets. 100g of wool for $5, which might be age or sun damaged, or a pretty blanket out of a considerable quantity of yarn for a couple $ more? I know which I'd want. There's probably the same quantity of yarn in one of the squares of some of those blankets. Not that you'd want to frog it lol. btw, the stitches in the Halloween blanket are mostly seed stitch. The number of blankets in your op shops says there are a lot of crafty people in your area. You don't find so many where I am. There are currently lots of books and magazines where I am, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, (awful to say but I think a lot of old crafters here are dying off). I got a pack of about 20 vintage small crochet cottons (of various use and shades), same as those priced each where you are, but for $1 the lot. Feather and fan knitting stitch can require counting. While it can be done by an adventurous beginner, I would not suggest it to anyone who is new or not overly sure about more than the basics. I'd say stick to what you enjoy. There's plenty to crochet and I'm sure you can do fine cotton stuff like in that hat too. It's probably the quality of the yarn that makes those stitches in it smooth and they are exactly the same basic sc stitches you crochet with larger gauge yarn, amigurumis etc. Grab some yarn, any yarn and hook, and give broomstick crochet a go. Just to try it. It is great for textural stitches and not hard. Show me how you go with it. The stick, or anything of a size, is just to make even sized loops. I do netting on occasion. But mainly to make my own jute nets (out of jute, bailing twine or t-shirt yarn made out of t-shirts rather than bought) to grow my peas or beans on in the garden (coz I'm too cheap to pay what they want for a one size ready-made one and feel proud of my custom sized pretty own lol). I think most cottons do stretch to a point as market bags. Straps require pulling as you make one to get an idea of where the bag will eventually hang. Try crocheting one of the free Bendigo Woollen Mills crochet market bags. They're fun and will give you an idea. Plus you can use your scrap yarn to make one. There are a few to choose from with different stitches. I'm rambling again. Always excited to talk craft. Better go do some. (I like the stoneware button keeper too :))
Hi Nefraial :) I'm definitely looking forward to finding new ways to use these buttons - lots of fun! Yes, the Salvos pricing is definitely odd! The blanket vs singular balls are just so inconsistent! Guess it just comes down to whoever is pricing that day? Very odd. Yes, that Halloween blanket was lovely - seed stitch? I'll look that up for sure, it is a striking looking stitch! And seeing it in varying colours was great - someone had put a lot of work into that blanket. Yes, Ballarat definitely has a lot of crafters here! It is a town that celebrates art and crafts and there are alot of opportunities for artists here to display their work. I feel very privileged to live here. In regards to the feather and fan stitch, I feel like its something I could try - but it's at the bottom of my increasingly growing list of wips! I feel like I need to get my crochet projects done before I start learning or focusing on something new. If I do attempt it though, I will let you know how I go! :) I am definitely wanting to try to size down with my hooks and yarn and try some smaller scale work (like that beanie) and I feel like if I scale down gradually I'd be able to manage it! I just need to actually attempt it. I have used a 2.75mm hook for one project, and I seemed to manage that ok, but I've never used anything smaller than that. Yes, Broomstick crochet looks interesting! I'd never heard of it until I saw it in the book! I'll definitely give it a try and see how I go. And I do think I'll try one of the BWM market bags - the pattern seems simple enough and I think a nice cotton would work out well with a project like that. Just stumbled upon your channel and I thoroughly enjoyed going with you on your treasure hunt. You're like me, I just love looking at the work people have put into the crochet items I find. I think of the person behind the work. Are they still living? What was their life story. I'd buy every piece if I had the room to store it.
That's exactly how I feel, too! 😃 I'd love to know their stories and find out all about them. I really wish I could salvage more and re-home or re-purpose them
Atlas 8 ply only 20 grams is definitely overpriced. I used to volunteer at Salvos and do the pricing. I would have charged $3 for the 100 gm lot if it was ‘wool’ . Unfortunately prices at their stores can vary greatly depending on who does the pricing.
Hi Slavica 👋 yes it does seem to vary a lot - especially when you can buy a whole blanket made with multiple balls of wool for $7, but a singular ball of wool (not even a complete ball) will cost you $5! It's very odd.

those cones in the plastic mesh bag I believe is for an industrial sewing machine? I could be wrong but that's what it looked like. About 30 years ago the Tunisian stitch was called Afghan stitch, I remember doing a blanket with it but honestly can't remember much about it i'm going to try it again at some point.

Hi Mel, I saw your lovely RUclips just now and was wondering which Salvo’s shop in Ballarat did you see the beautiful burnt orange shell or feathers knitted knee rug for $9. I have just rung 3 shops but they can’t find it. I’m disabled and I watch RUclipss each day to pass the time. I love your RUclips as I haven’t been able to go op shopping for 4 years now. The rug could go over my legs when I go to the hospital for treatment in my black wheelchair. Maybe use a granny square for the front part of a pillow. Those are beautiful colors .

I like those cones of thread and hold 3 or 4 together and make lace weight for a shawl.

It is something that takes a bit of practice. But putting a bead on the threads holds them together as a type of guide.

The "Halloween" blanket had some seed stitch in it. The blue blanket you liked is probably hand knitted. It was knit alternating stockinette rows with some garter ridges.

That stirch youre looking at around 13.40 is known here in NZ as Moss stitch. Bansically what it makes when I bugger up my rib stitch lol. So, k,p,k,p then do the same on the way back. So knit stitches on knit, amd purl on purls. Like a staggered stocking stitch.

Broomstick crochet is great and suprisingly easy. Naztazia has a lot of broomstick lace patterns and even published a book on it. I use a big knitting needle to do it (bought a supercheap set on ebay).

Why don't you think you can work with the fine yarns? Some people don't like to because of hand pain and others because it takes longer to get a project done. I work with all sizes and have dealt with the hand pain by changing my grip on the hook and using hooks with ergonomic handles. I have a book on microcrochet, and the author recommended slowly decreasing hook and yarn size down to quilting thread or the finer crochet cottons and silks. I am going to try it. 😊 Thanks for another thrifting video. Have fun with all that scrap yarn! I love buying that stuff at thrift stores too!

i made 2 market bags with cotton and they still stretch but they are strong, i'm now in the process of making one with the plastic insert on the bottom hoping it won't stretch as far

Buttons are a great purchase. Not only a good price for useful and beautiful buttons but they can be stitched onto things as embellishments as well. I made feather and fan wrist warmers with strips of odd buttons sewn along the top sides and they look fab.
I think it shameful the salvos are getting so expensive, and their pricing is so odd. All that packaging used to individually wrap scraps of yarn and all the yarn meticulously individually priced and far more expensive than any of the blankets. 100g of wool for $5, which might be age or sun damaged, or a pretty blanket out of a considerable quantity of yarn for a couple $ more? I know which I'd want. There's probably the same quantity of yarn in one of the squares of some of those blankets. Not that you'd want to frog it lol.
btw, the stitches in the Halloween blanket are mostly seed stitch. The number of blankets in your op shops says there are a lot of crafty people in your area. You don't find so many where I am.
There are currently lots of books and magazines where I am, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, (awful to say but I think a lot of old crafters here are dying off). I got a pack of about 20 vintage small crochet cottons (of various use and shades), same as those priced each where you are, but for $1 the lot.
Feather and fan knitting stitch can require counting. While it can be done by an adventurous beginner, I would not suggest it to anyone who is new or not overly sure about more than the basics. I'd say stick to what you enjoy. There's plenty to crochet and I'm sure you can do fine cotton stuff like in that hat too. It's probably the quality of the yarn that makes those stitches in it smooth and they are exactly the same basic sc stitches you crochet with larger gauge yarn, amigurumis etc.
Grab some yarn, any yarn and hook, and give broomstick crochet a go. Just to try it. It is great for textural stitches and not hard. Show me how you go with it. The stick, or anything of a size, is just to make even sized loops.
I do netting on occasion. But mainly to make my own jute nets (out of jute, bailing twine or t-shirt yarn made out of t-shirts rather than bought) to grow my peas or beans on in the garden (coz I'm too cheap to pay what they want for a one size ready-made one and feel proud of my custom sized pretty own lol).
I think most cottons do stretch to a point as market bags. Straps require pulling as you make one to get an idea of where the bag will eventually hang. Try crocheting one of the free Bendigo Woollen Mills crochet market bags. They're fun and will give you an idea. Plus you can use your scrap yarn to make one. There are a few to choose from with different stitches.
I'm rambling again. Always excited to talk craft. Better go do some. (I like the stoneware button keeper too :))

Yes, the Salvos pricing is definitely odd! The blanket vs singular balls are just so inconsistent! Guess it just comes down to whoever is pricing that day? Very odd.
Yes, that Halloween blanket was lovely - seed stitch? I'll look that up for sure, it is a striking looking stitch! And seeing it in varying colours was great - someone had put a lot of work into that blanket. Yes, Ballarat definitely has a lot of crafters here! It is a town that celebrates art and crafts and there are alot of opportunities for artists here to display their work. I feel very privileged to live here.
In regards to the feather and fan stitch, I feel like its something I could try - but it's at the bottom of my increasingly growing list of wips! I feel like I need to get my crochet projects done before I start learning or focusing on something new. If I do attempt it though, I will let you know how I go! :)
I am definitely wanting to try to size down with my hooks and yarn and try some smaller scale work (like that beanie) and I feel like if I scale down gradually I'd be able to manage it! I just need to actually attempt it.
I have used a 2.75mm hook for one project, and I seemed to manage that ok, but I've never used anything smaller than that.
Yes, Broomstick crochet looks interesting! I'd never heard of it until I saw it in the book! I'll definitely give it a try and see how I go.
And I do think I'll try one of the BWM market bags - the pattern seems simple enough and I think a nice cotton would work out well with a project like that. I'll let you know how I go with that too! :)

I think of the person behind the work. Are they still living? What was their life story. I'd buy every piece if I had the room to store it.

Atlas 8 ply only 20 grams is definitely overpriced. I used to volunteer at Salvos and do the pricing. I would have charged $3 for the 100 gm lot if it was ‘wool’ . Unfortunately prices at their stores can vary greatly depending on who does the pricing.
Hi Slavica 👋 yes it does seem to vary a lot - especially when you can buy a whole blanket made with multiple balls of wool for $7, but a singular ball of wool (not even a complete ball) will cost you $5! It's very odd.

those cones in the plastic mesh bag I believe is for an industrial sewing machine? I could be wrong but that's what it looked like. About 30 years ago the Tunisian stitch was called Afghan stitch, I remember doing a blanket with it but honestly can't remember much about it i'm going to try it again at some point.
