- The 2023 Toyota Supra A-91 MT Edition ($72,217 as specced in Canada, $60,635 in the US) is finally here. After three years with an automatic transmission only, the Toyota Supra is now available once again with a manual gearbox. It is still powered by the same 3.0L turbo 6-cylinder, but now includes a new traction control system to help prevent tank-slapping oversteer and improve cornering traction. Thomas and James take the new Supra MT Edition out to see how it performs as a fun street car. How does it compare to its competition for the price, and how is it to drive with the new transmission? We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

The new M2 is going to be almost 3900lbs! (1769kg), compared to the Supra which is ~3300 (1496kg). The Supra is the best BMW Sports car you can buy now, hands down.

"The Supra is the best BMW Sports car you can buy now"
Probably true and at the same time sooo sad how such a great brand has destroyed itself. BMW, not Toyota. 😉
Oh wow. Somewhat incredible that a modern compact sports car weighs as much as a 90s wagon.
@beast boy Imagine telling anybody in the 90s that BMW will have the ugliest German cars and that past the Bangle area.
The CU Later Gray paint is named in reference to the periodic table symbol for copper (Cu), because this is a BMW paint colour called Sparkling Copper Grey. CU Later has metallic copper flakes in it, and it's supposed to shine like gold under light.
Similarly, the Supra's also new Stratosphere Blue is BMW's Portimao Blue, borrowed from the BMW M3.
Wow. That colour name went from stupid to pretty cool real fast with this explanation. Thank you!
My bmw has sparkling Graphite and it doesn't sparkle much
Came here to say this but you said it better.
Thanks for the intelligent explanation. They should have known that as reviewers of the car but that requires research I guess
@@treaves2175 Personally, it's still stupid, but the really fun kind of stupid that I can't help but appreciate. Just like the GR 86's punny "Track bRed" paint
I think the “Cu Later” refers to the fact that Copper ages over time into a green-blue gray. Pretty clever name if that’s what they were doing.
James had the name wrong. It's "CU Later Gray," not "Cu Later." I, for one, don't think that they would name a car color after oxidized metal that is a completely different color than the car's paint.
CU is the name of the element Copper
Clever fellow
I think hes right with the oxidized copper thing. If you see it in sunlight, there is a hint of copper in the fleck. Anyone go get a penny that is clearly old and look at the color. It's pretty spot on
@@dannyd7714 technically "Cu" is copper. "CU" is a molecule of 1 carbon and 1 uranium. Lowercase letters are important when talking elements.
The only thing my google-fu could find regarding a single of each atom is a novel bond scientists have been able to create which has a very weak bond (which means it's not a stable molecule) and is called uranium methanide, but it's UC, not CU. What little I recall from chemistry in highschool 24 years ago along with Google makes this an important distinction, but I don't remember WHY.
Dunking on the Z is understadable, but still hurts a little. It has to be said, obviously, but everybody knows full well that unless the Z and the manual Supra sell, we're not getting cars like that ever again.
Everybody keeps saying things like this and then one gets released a year later.
The Z can dunk on other cars to.
@@spicysnowman8886 If people weren't saying it, there is no way in hell Toyota would bother with a manual Supra. Not to mention Toyota didn't want to build a new Supra in the first place, until BMW offered to do it for them, in exchange for their tech.
I’m pretty sure the Z isn’t the last fat pig of disappointment that Nissan will make.
whats wrong with the z?
They refined the steering and handling quite a bit. Owners from the previous years have gone onto the 2023 and report both on track and street that the steering changes have made the car more communicative of what the front and back end are actually doing. Suspension is more composed and doesn't snap oversteer. I'd love to see you guys take a 2023 onto the track, either automatic or manual and see for yourself. I myself moved from a 2020 AT to a new 2023 Automatic and live near TMP if you guys want to try.
Why not wait for last year model? Or manual? 2020 and 2021 have different suspension as well , well the tuning of suspension
@@bman1668 dealership offered Me close to what I paid for it 3 years ago! Likely going to stick with the 2023 for the long haul, was happy with the 2020 though for sure.
This is why you never buy the first model year of any vehicle, unless you're deeply in love with the vehicle and/or plan to make it a garage princess.
@@TheRealChilly the 2020 was still a mighty good car for a first model year
@@SlickSniper3 2020 is still the best sounding year, which to me is one of the most important things if you don't plan on modding.
3:57 I love how James is genuinely scared as Thomas casually cruises through the gears 😮
AFAIK "genuinely" will aways be the Ford GT episode 😬
So, CU Later Grey is originally a BMW color called "Sparkling Copper Metallic". And when the sun hits it, it produces quite a shiny Copper-color flake. So then, why "CU Later"? Because on the periodic table, Copper is Cu.
Still a tremendously silly name 😂.
Love y'all ❤️
Thank you for enlightening me with your genius. Just looked up an image of the flake and it looks awesome.

the manual of this car will be an underappreciated gem. i see this in 15 years being something collected once everything is eletric

Definitely. Especially that it will have been low volume. The rare supra. The one you should want damnit
@@OpenBarGarage there will be many more. They’re pushing the manual “edition” right now as a special thing.
manual, 6 cylinder, RWD, hatchback, manual handbrake, the perfect recipe
I totally disagree with you. This is what Supra appreciators have been yelling at Toyota to provide since the A91 was released. This is an appreciated gem that is finally attainable. These will sell like crazy. I’ll bet 85% of GR Supra owners will (try to) buy one of these and trade on their ZF8 speed Supra.

I just hope this AND the Z are great and sell well, these kind of cars are basically on life support now
The Z doesn't look anywhere near as good but it's at least Japanese.
i hope this, z, miata, gr86, elantra n, golf r, sell well. I am not mentioning ctr, gr corolla, c8 z06, gt3rs, etc because we know those are gonna sell well and always be backordered. But yea we need all the fun cars to do well
We have the Z, Supra, GR86/BRZ, Corolla GR, and the much better looking inside and outside 11th gen Civic Type R. For those of us who are into Japanese cars, that's a pretty decent selection. Now all we need is a new RX car from Mazda and a GR86 fighter from Nissan called the Silvia and all is well.
Yes I know the Supra isn't Japanese but still.
I hope they make very minimal production runs. Instead of depreciating, these cars will increase in value year after year.

O man were you missing out
Waiting for my BASE 3.0 Manual to arrive, at MSRP, in the new blue. Seems like a solid deal for a fun but not too ridiculous little sports car. The only thing I wish was an option was the brown interior because that elevates the cabin a lot IMO.
The base manual starts at 60k? USD?
@@v8_sami $55, $60 for the premium.
I'd get the blue too.

I’m waiting for mine too, I’ve been on the allocation list for months, any word on when you get yours? My dealership told me they don’t know when they’ll get it but they’ll definitely have it for me.
You guys are so much fun to watch. Thanks for all the laughs and the great info as well.
The best Canadian car related channel by far.
Finally, been waiting for a review of the manual Supra from you guys. I’m going to order one in the next couple months and want all the info I can get.
I've seen groups of these new Supras running around. Sounds like it's becoming a classic.
I like the new Supra more and more. If I had to go to work every day I would probably pick this up as a daily driver.
I think even at this price tag, this could still be a better car for your bucks than the new M2
A used F series M2 is a better bang for you buck than both of those haha
@@csanc2906 Debatable, the NA version supra has nearly the same amount of power and less weight, and supra has a shorter wheel base. Apart from able to put two more people at the back. The f gen M2 is NOT a better car than supra. Not to mention if it's not the competition version, which has less power.
The wind buffeting is a deal breaker for the Supra, but if they would make a convertible version, I would be hyped.
@@fortheloveofnoise9298 As long as Z4 exists, there won't be a convertible supra.
ZL1 is better, in every way, plus has 2 more seats.
“Only in every measurable way…” LOL! Savage!
We really need a manual transmission hierarchy chart. I've had three manual bimmers and the shifter feel is always spongey. Honda has great manuals. A Mazda MX-5 (NC) has probably my favorite shift feel.
They all feel overly notchy, and not very good feedback unless you punch the shifts with the force of a semi truck. I didn't know what I was missing until I tried the Miata ND's shifter. I don't understand why others won't use Mazda's shifter as reference. It's so good, can't be that hard to replicate.
@@iamthelaw69 I don't know this for certain, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Miata's shifter feel (which I have driven) was helped tremendously by the fact that it doesn't have to be built to deal with very much torque (seeing as it is a bespoke transmission only used in the Miata). It's basically only half the torque of the Supra/B58. Kind of like how the entire Miata in general has great feel/feedback because it isn't burdened with all the reinforcement & burliness needed to deal with huge horsepower or weight.
Such a shame the ND has electronic steering....so sad, otherwise I would have got one years ago.
@@fortheloveofnoise9298 Too bad for you then. It's one of the best manual cars on the market today.
I've been auto-crossing my 2020 Supra all summer and honestly I think that's why I disagree when I hear people say it's a little unpredictable in the corners. My first event in it was in the wet and all I did was slide around the track (yes it was that rare auto-cross on an actual road course) the entire time. It was a perfect chance to learn where the car is at it's limits and I've not had any issues knowing where it was going since. It was a powerful experience to say the least and it gave me so much confidence in the car. In a perfect world we would all get to do this and learn what our cars actually are capable of.
That's not to say it isn't tail happy, because it can be. Coming from someone who is used to lift off oversteer from hooning FWD cars (I'll always be a Honda kid) the simple answer is to learn to throttle your accelerator instead of letting go completely. 👍
A lot of old car drivers seem cannot get along with electric steering, period. I love electric steering and it takes all the hassles of analog steering that I don't have to deal with no more. I can sorta understand it being "numb", but I still get road and tire feelings from the body. I think it's just a shift in paradigm and olddies just can't appreciate the new tech on the road.
I'm gonna call that color "battleship gray" and it seems to be all the rage among carmakers these days and I can see why. It's just so eye-catching. All it needs is a USS A91 painted on its side. Go figure...
The paint itself is cool but gray is the last thing I would want a sports car in, too bland.
2:24 I thought you guys would never test the RS3 because it won't be available in Canada. This gets me excited!
Came here to try to answer question of manual Supra or manual F87 M2 and was the rear sorted now. Wasn’t disappointed. Thanks TH!

C'mon over to my place to see some more - I got a rake and some bags too! 😁
"The vents start as fake but get more real later" that got me 😂
I'm hoping on a proper mid-cycle refresh, Toyota can address complaints like doing something about the fake vents (either removing them or making them functional, I don't care), improving visibility a bit and/or at least eliminating the wind buffeting with the windows down at speed, and adjusting the rear-suspension to something a bit more.... composed? Buttoned-down?
I really like the Supra and think it has so much potential. I'm really happy to see it have a manual finally on top of the solid ZF 8-speed.
I have been seeing a LOT more Supras driving about in my area. The AutoMile near me usually has a lot of C8s and stringrays driving about. Some McClarens and Ferarris but suddenly over the past month or so i have spotted around 6 Supras driving about...where before it was very rare i would see one on the road.
That Nissan Z bit was savage, perfect ending 🤣
Id love to hear if any of the Supra's you guys have driven had a proper alignment done. My 2020 Supra was so on edge until i got a proper alignment, it was so far off from Factory spec. Now its much better on track. And lost that nervous feeling when hitting bumps, especially at speed on track.
Check some fb groups! My 2020 downshift blue does this.. kinda wanting to get a new manual one.
The new 23s apparently handle immensely better and solved snap oversteered on ours.

BMW is not a bad word, they make good performance cars. No need to feel bad calling it a BMW
Lol I love the shot at the Z you guys took at the end 😂 and I agree if I was choosing between the two I’d have to take the M2 and I love Toyota
Both cars are BMWs... and the Z is about 15k cheaper MSRP. If they are comparing the Z to the Supra they might as well make the better comparison (price similarity) to an 86.
@@tgoods44 say whatever you want but Supra comes with the Toyota name plate and they tuned the engine and transmission as well as designed the body and look the Supra has so it’s majority bmw not all ….. the Z was a big disappointment and almost every enthusiast agrees so … fuck off

That was quite the ending!
I like that shift knob 👀 very 911 like. Since it’s essentially a BMW drivetrain I’m wondering if the Supra shift rod is also BMW and thus this new Supra knob can also fit on a manual BMW?
I love the Supra, and the fact that it NOW comes in manual, just adds on to my love for it.
5:55 has me weak! Lmao! The way he said "What?" 😂
7:11 yea this rings true to any car with bmw’s tt inline 6s, the engine outputs a lot of torque when the turbos are ready.
The Type R has hands down one of the best manual shifters. Hopefully the aftermarket takes care of this issue on the Supra.

Would like a historical revelation retrospective of the Opel GT and Ferrari Dino 246 GT (both produced 1968-1973). Try them on for size and then evaluate if z4Supra is still such a claustrophobic-low visibility coupe.
I know it’s not really a comparable car but a used c7 corvette would definitely give this a run for it’s money
c7 will give anything a run for the money. I got a 12 mustang on spray and i can only hang till 80mph
I think a C7 is a comparable car. Both are front mounted or front mid-mounted engines, RWD, 2 seat sport cars. The Corvette is a bit heavier. But in terms of track performance the C7 takes it. Rolling would be the Supra, and from a dig I think the C7 would win 7 out 10 times. GM has it spot on when it comes to launching vehicles without AWD. Look at the ZL1 when compared to a GT500 on unprepped surfaces. Unless the GT500 launches perfectly, it's not catching up to the Camaro until a little before the quarter mile mark. If you want a track car thats stock from the get go. Go for the C7, if you want a tossable fun car, go for the Supra. If interior quality and tech is your thing in these kind of cars the Supra is the go to. I'm also not saying the C7 isn't tossable. It's just easier and more controllable in the Supra.
This episode was like eating a very, very spicy dish because Z burn at the end was real…..😊
Yeah feels bad man, I still want it for $12k CAD less than the Supra... that's not a small difference
Just the best for the money 👏🏻

I'll have 3-4 years to pick one up, but I have bonded with my M2, and I'm not letting it go.

Keep the lol’s coming!
Agree on the first point, but I never saw the appeal on a different colored hood than the body color in cars, just makes it look cheap and tacked on (unless real carbon fiber)
Did they fix the wind/open window buffeting issue?
They would need to redesign the whole uppre structure to do so, it's a aerodynamics issue. It would be worth it for the manufacturer to do so, it wouldn't sell them any more cars to justify the cost.
no
Funny how all the reviews leave out that minor....really huge detail !!
I can't believe Supra didn't launch with this in the beginning.
Honestly, how many potential Supra owners held out until manual became available? I'm guessing not many. Maybe people will trade in theirs?
Toyota didn't do so because BMW specifically said that they weren't allowed access to a manual transmission platform for 3 years. We knew this 3 years ago.

@@macattack123mattc3 Why bother? BMW said "we'll manufacture and GIVE you a whole new car, for free, if you let us see under the hood of your new Mirai!" Last 20 seconds, brilliant.
$72k sounds like a lot for a Supra, but it's fully loaded. The absolute cheapest Cayman with a 4-cylinder engine starts at $75k. The Cayman GTS4.0 that you actually want starts at $103k and probably lacks a bunch of amenities that are included in the Supra.
It's fully loaded, for a Supra. Not only does the Cayman drive better, it's more comfortable inside and actually looks good from the outside. I'll take a better driving, more comfortable, good looking car over the Supra for 3k more.

I’ve heard that about Adam Driver a few time and I get the same reaction. I’m a fan of older bmws and have (had) 2 from the 80’s and 3 from the 90’s, if I wanted a new BMW I would just get a Supra. I think you’ll save in the long run. BMW gets you on the maintenance program. Plus unless they changed it for 2023 they don’t have manual transmissions anymore or straight rwd. For years, I have wanted a barebones BMW. The closest thing you will get is a Z3 or this. I have a Z3, but it is 24 years old.
CU Later in the sun is a different color. That overcast day did it no favors. Great car IMO, and part of the appeal is the relative rarity and look of the car.

Honestly the new Toyota gr Supra is getting better already with the manual transmission is so nice already
I think it was a good choice of Toyota for waiting as people learned how to appreciate the ZF transmission instead of bashing cause "real men drive manual" crap. Now you have the 2 flavor and opinion on how awesome both are versions are.
need a roadster version. Or a removeable roof targa (like vette). Love my Z4
Cu Later would make sense if it was a copperish colour...
I exclaimed, "This should be on the main channel!", opened the video, and immediately busted out laughing
Watching Thomas drive that thing in the rain made my hands sweaty the whole video. Did they get rid of the buffeting when the windows are down ('cause that's a deal breaker).
Poor Z. Never going to live up to expectations.
I get the feeling that the people who complain about the Z aren't the people who are going to buy a Z new off the lot.
Nissan knows what they're doing, and who their customer is.
What will kill it however, is not being able to get enough of them out, and the consequent dealer mark-ups. I'd buy a Z, but I'm sure as shit not going to get bent over by a dealer.
I was interested, but I prefer NA engines and my vehicle HAS to be a convertible.

You can also get the manual in 3.0 Premium trim instead of the $30k marked-up A91-MT trim. At least in the US.
The car everybody loves to hate-on even though it's got one of the best platforms for the price. No? Let me explain: Unlike the M2, it's not based on a commuter car. don't take my word, quoting BMW themselves when they invited Tada-san to engineer a sports car with them: "none of the M cars is actually a ground up sports platform" (none..) bespoke platform means over 44,000 nm/deg torsional rigidly; proper wheelbase length and track widths (that weren't sacrificed for rear leg room or cargo space) CoG and engine position among others. All Mandated by Toyota; BMW wanted a new i8 hybrid kinda car and the Japanese weren't playing game. Plus that's a ZF manual transmission, BMW doesn't make transmissions.... -_-, which is ridiculous since everybody in turn calls the Auto the "ZF"....??? Going on, Unlike the 350/370/newZ it's a 2020's car not a 2000's one; so all the platform traits above are way worse in the nissan in an unfixable manner. Unlike Any Cayman it has 5 way multilink rear suspension and not MacPherson pogo sticks. The ex-F1 Enginner, Jay O'Connell made a multilink kit for Caymans for this very reason and he did the technical measurements if anybody is intersted in roll center migration, camber and toe curves. And that makes a big difference; Porsche uses 5 way multilink in the 911's for a reason (and they almost deserve a Nobel Prize for giving the 992 gt3 front double wishbones from their race cars, I digress.)
The result? Jackie Ding was a fractions of a second behind a fricken GT2 RS in the last grid life round.
But yeah it's a BMW LOLOMGFTW........meh
Don't give a damn about badges, am passionate about and highly respect excellent engineering. And I find it VERY annoying to dismiss the work of Gazoo Racing's Japanese engineers just because it's made with BMW's supply chain.

Thomas' huh what response had my cracking up.
the color is fantastic, very similar to Mazda's polymetal grey
I love that interior
I'm done with manual cars. I'm never going to go to a race track, so I don't see a need for one. I drive manual Ford Ranger and this is the last manual for me. Bring the auto

I... uh.. what? Manuals have been obsolete for racing for a few years now, at least. A good auto is always going to outperform a manual, no matter the driver. That stopped being an argument for manual cars for a while now. Manuals are more fun, engaging, predictable and reliable. But in terms of performance, it's not better at all.
If you're tired of the third pedal and just want to drive peacefully now, go ahead. But if your argument is that you don't care about losing in a race (while driving a Ranger...) so you're going auto, that just doesn't make any sense.
I sat in the Supra at an auto show last year, and I was surprised to find it more cramped than a Miata. I cannot believe how claustrophobic that interior is, and I'm not especially averse to cramped cars. I sat in a first gen Lotus Elise when someone brought one Stateside. Yes, it was harder to get in-and-out of, but that felt roomy compared to the Supra.
I guess interior space wasn't part of their "every measurable way" comparison with the Z lmao
My next car is either gonna be this or a older 240i rwd. God this is such a beauty.
i have the 2017 m240i and I'm having a hard time justifying getting rid of it to get the premium supra....convince me someone.
OMG the front license plate ruins it. Got my A91-MT 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. Getting ppf and window tint today. Thank goodness I don’t have to put front plate where I live. Fortunate to get at MSRP as well. BMW navigation is only thing I don’t like.
