  • "NIGHT LIGHT" is a fan film of The Dresden Files. THE DRESDEN FILES is copyright Jim Butcher. This fan film is licensed under the Creative Commons as derivative, non-commercial fiction.
Many thanks to Jim Butcher, Priscilla Spencer, Pamela Shaw, and the many people who gave us advice and help, and thought this was a pretty righteous thing to attempt.
Born of a desire for a way to film magical effects without bothering to remove modern elements such as airplanes and telephone poles, our straying into the 'verse of Dresden's Chicago were done out of a fierce love of the books, respect for their author, and straight up geekdom.

I don't watch Fan Films very often, but as a long time Harry Dresden fan I had to check it out. I thought it was well done and had Dresden's brand of sarcasm, which is as essential to a Dresden Files story as the use of Magic. I'm saving this on my personal Dresden-Related playlist and will pass it on to any other fans I meet. I will be subscribing to your channel, so please let us know if and there will be another.

Very good for a fan film; this seems to stay quite true to Butcher's Dresden's universe. I liked the attention to detail in set construction and props. Bob sitting on and next to romance novels penned by Shannon K. Butcher is awesome, as is the use of sidewalk chalk appropriately found in a child's houses--and Bob saying that Charity was named after the wrong virtue--after a discussion of guilt as a form of mind control--hilarious!

Yes :) Laurell K. Hamilton was one of Butcher's inspirations when he started out, so we had to put her on Bob's shelf! And it had to be Anita Blake, since some of that character inspired some of Karrin Murphy!

Just finished listening to the Audiobooks, and with it fresh in my mind this was so close to the book's "feel and style" that I would love to see it done as a feature film! The closest adaptation of a book's characters and general storyline I've ever seen. LEAGUES better than Hollywood would've created [without question better than the show.] Kudos!

Harry, wearing only a towel, walking in on Molly at the end was our nod to that scene. We thought about doing the EXACT scene from Proven Guilty, but our Molly had issue with having a pitcher of ice water poured over her in February, for some reason. *grin*

Yeaaaaah...my apologies about sound. We worked with, literally, no budget and only had my first gen USB mic to work with. Its an MXL 006...which is great for my personal uses...not so much for film making. The mic is wide and picks up ALL THE THINGS...which made editing very, very tricky.
BUT...I've since made plans for my end of year bonus from my real job and will, hopefully, have a couple of shiny new mics by the time we start Red Dawn. There's also rumours of re-relooping Night Light....>.

Gotta say 7 out of ten for this movie overall. The writing was a definite 9 felt very true to dresden universe and Jim Butchers writing style and im giving you a +1 for the line "I aint yo bitch!" I died laughing. Bringing you to a solid 10. Set design gets a 9 too you hit so many small props missed by anyone not well versed in the books such as Little Chigago on dresdens desk, the victorias secret catalog on Bobs shelf, the fact your Karrin actually drove a Saturn, and the StarWars poster by Harrys front door. The casting gets an 8 but Molly seemed a bit older than she was in the chronology of the books. She would be perfect for the Ghost Story Molly. The acting was a 5 but its fan made and I dont expect Oscar award winning acting from fan made. The cinematography was a 6 because your camera man was not on his game most of the time a steady cam rig would have been handy(diy rigs work well and can be built cheap). The audio gets a 2 as well as the lighting. My only real gripe was lashiels voice didnt match her lips, I am aware it was voiced by a different actress but I found myself paying more attention to her lips than what she was saying. Overall it was an amazing movie for a low buget fan made movie. I really wonder what Jim Butcher would think of it. All in all I really enjoyed it an look forward to another episode. Keep up the good work!
    Cheers

I'm just looking over the comments here and thought I'd answer a couple of your points, for-the-record like.
I had built a stedi-rig for this effort but it turned out not to work well with the nice camera we used due to it's weight. I'm currently figuring out a body rig to take care of that issue.
The interior sets were actually custom built for the piece. We turned the director's garage into our lab and his livingroom into the rest of the apartment. Half of those walls were insulating foam with batten strips and were flimsy enough that the wind from walking past them would make them move. It came together amazingly well though and it was a fairly surreal experience to remove the apartment at the end of the shoot so they could continue living in their house. :)

It's good! I like it! My only criticism is the quality of the audio. A few good mics, and a bit more tweaking in a mixer would help.

Totally agree! It wouldn't be that hard to do what the pros do and that is record a better audio over the one on the film. After 4 years they could call them all back and do a fresh audio track for a reunion event

I won't lie, Landon looks pretty friggin spot on to a description of Harry and he's really good looking too! The audio is (as others have said) something you should fix for your next film, and sometimes the acting seemed a bit forced, but I genuinely loved this! I think you did well to capture Harry's personality along with the others. (And I am proud to say I guessed who Thomas was right off the bat). Not to mention the story itself was pretty great

All things considered it was pretty good especially for something that was low budget. The voice-track and volume is a bit off at time and some more fight lessons/choreography would go a long way - a little corny at first but it picks up well a bit into it- and the guy that played Dresden was spot on! Congrats you guys and don't stop what you do, amazing!

I am a huge Dresden fan not bad and I am no film maker. that being said a few things that I would do differently molly is to old in this you bounce back and forth with the story from after changes to proven guilty most noted is if this is around proven guilty then molly would be much younger and Murphy would be Lt Murphy not sergeant. I did enjoy this film and thank you for taking the time to make it. am waiting for skin games release and looking forward to reading the new short story that just came out really enjoy the Molly character and am looking forward to seeing what happened to her after cachinnates keep reading and if you film more then I will watch. Pleases follow the time line a bit closer and define the roles closer to the book and you could have a good thing.

    • @TheIceSpectre
      @TheIceSpectre 10 лет назад +1

I think perhaps the "Sight" scene, where Emily sees Harry as he appears on the cover of Cold Days, is confusing you a bit. This film absolutely takes place in March between "Proven Guilty" and "White Night." Murphy has absolutely been demoted by this point (since she is demoted due the Arctis Tor raid, which happened at the end of Proven Guilty). Molly is 19 (counting her age jump in Proven Guilty as canon), she has short, white-blonde hair, and there isn't be anything mentioned from "Changes" at all. Additionally, Bob absolutely does move, jangling around on the shelf, chattering his teeth together, thumping his forehead against the shelf, etc. Bob cannot relocate the skull himself, nor leave it without permission, but he moves it around quite a bit in place. Please watch Night Light again, as I believe you have misunderstood some rather major portions of it. We are very glad you enjoyed it, and think you will enjoy it much more if you know exactly where this film sits in the timeline. March, between Proven Guilty and White Night. We are indeed preparing another one, called "Red Sun," which takes place approximately four months before "Turn Coat."

very good . harry could use a bit more character emotion but otherwise he fit the role ok. bob the skull was the wrong voice . too close to harrys' and his dialog could have been better . the skull moving effects were cheap but fun. the best actors were molly ,murphy, and lasciel. they were believable and spot on. I do wish they had finished with whoever was behind it. the mystery continues. Thomas was alright.
even with earphones ,I had trouble hearing everybody at one time or another. whoever the set designer was ,did an excellent job of putting in the backround places from the books. the little Chicago and the depleted uranium and bob's romances were fun to spot. harrys' special effect magics were good for low budget. in some ways that might have been even better for the feel of Dresden's world than a larger budget would have brought
as for the script., it was pretty good except there were a few lines stolen right out of the books almost word for word. not enough to be annoying ,but enough that I noticed. the rest of the script was in the right feel for the world of Dresden.

Molly is written as a hot chick, not a country breakfast.

Oh! Then this should have been a reenactment of Cold Days. I am just saying, near to naked girl in the shower never a bad thing unless, you do not know her all that well.
Thank God that you guys did not do the scene from Proven Guilty where Molly gives Harry a show.
