One thing she's doing that sounds quite advanced to my ears is that she's rhythmically almost completely freeform. In her case it's probably natural and unintentional, but it works incredibly well within this genre. Other jazz singers often follow behind the beat, then catch up - hitting the beat briefly on certain key phrases. It creates a push/pull dynamic between the rhythm and the melodic lines, and that gives the sensation that the listener is immersed in the auditory equivalent to a gentle wave at the beach. Astrid's voice is so rhythmically free form, that it feels like random puffs of a gentle summer breeze. Another way of describing it would be that she's very "loose" on the beat. The percussionist is keeping the beat tight, and the other guys are in between, tying it all together. Stan's sax solos are loose, but also tighten up at the end of his phrasing, keeping it all from falling apart, which it's constantly just on the very tasty edge of - from the moment Astrid begins to sing.
Loose is not necessarily free form, the counting is just very fast, no one could actually count it, you just feel it. What's more impressive is the complete lack of vibration in her voice, almost robotic but, beautiful.
Jack, the tenor sax here is played by Ruud Brink, not Stan Getz. "In 1962 (Trio) Pim Jacobs (piano), Wim Overgaauw (guitar) and Ruud Jacobs (double bass), invited Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto and drummer Dom Um Romão and Dutch tenor saxophone player Ruud Brink, for a musical TV Show called "Dzjes Zien". Which dedicaded a program to Bossa Nova." But you're right about all the important bits concerning rhythm and intonation.

Antonio Carlos Jobim was such a genius.. He was for sure one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. If you read the lyrics of this song you'll see how beautifully naked they are. That's the kind of person Jobim was. These lyrics also show the immense love he had for a girl. It somehow didn't work out and Jobim ended up in a mental facility for a while. That's how much and how deep his love was; he loved her with the whole core of his being.
Thanks for all the beautiful music you have left us Astrud, RIP.
