Luke, in all honesty i think they way you look at it is wrong.
Expecting to "capitalize" on the tv show seems more like a marketing move, i mean, pushing a new fallout game based on trends its forceful... what kind of game would they give us?, if they sole purpose of a "new fallout" its just to take advantage of the fame of the show.
I see games as art not as product, and when games are made for a product they usually lack in substance, creativity.

    So to summarize:
They basically released a PC version for the current gen consoles, that broke existing and essential quality of life improvements/mods.
This version is currently not even working properly on Xbox.
There is no HDR, no motion blur or new postprocessing (not even in the 30/40fps modes which is madness) no ray tracing, no graphical improvements, apart from minor tweaks to LOD, volumetrics, shadow resolution that PC version already had... Also, why is there a 30/40 fps mode in such an old game?
This game is almost 10 years old and Xbox and PS5 are still dropping frames to 50s.
According to some standards, we could easily call this game "retro" in just few months.
Ultrawide screen stretches HUD from 16:9 and simply zooms in the whole FOV - there is no proper widescreen support. (this is what mods fixed ages ago)
Locked to 60fps and if you unlock it, the game falls apart.
Now compare this "next gen" update to Witcher 3 real next gen update, which was also free, that shipped with perfect HDR, ray tracing and plethora of other visual improvements.
    🤦

Honestly installing the Begin Again modlist was probably some of the the easiest modding I have ever done. I regard Fallout 4 other then Far Harbor as a blackmark of nearly the same level as 76 on Fallout's history. The only thing I felt was improved in Fallout 4 over New Vegas was the power armor and the engine, that's it, everything else was worse.
At this point I just want New Vegas and Fallout 3 both ported to the creation engine 2 so they are more stable and have better lighting, that's it. "I think i'll wait 9 months or a year, maybe after the first expansion is out, they turn things around enough, i'll buy it"
Now- i don't even think i'd buy a Starfield complete edition in several years on massive sale and i genuinely fear for ESVI

RE: BGS and quality and the state of the next gen update:: I've been in the IT field for about nine years now. Over the past like 2 years, ive seen a noticeable push for inclusivity and 'wokeness' in the industry, although it's not universal across all industries. Anyway, some of these hires made under the banner of 'wokeness' or 'diversity' have consistently underperformed. Unfortunately, I believe this issue is affecting the gaming industry as well. I'm all for giving people opportunity but there has to be standards set. Hire based on skill and not on ethnic background, provide more intern programs and paths for more junior people to learn and gain the skills needed to be leaders and innovators in their respective industries.
This does not excuse senior devs and QAs signing off on this crap and letting it be pushed to production in that state.

    Starfield can't be fixed.
Todd praised Larian in an interview but can't make a game comparable to BG3 and would never put sex in one of his video games.
Todd says they are looking for ways to speed up game production presumably under pressure from Jill Braff and Phil Spencer to do something to take advantage of the tvs shows popularity.
However there is little he can do other than maybe get the Fallout 3 remaster out the door quicker.
If forced into making a fallout game it most likely would be another microsoft studio. But not Obsidian or InExile the studios that have former Fallout developers who work there including Josh Sawyer of Obsidian. Sawyer was the director of Fallout New Vegas but I don't see Todd ever agreeing with allowing Sawyer/Obsidian to make another Fallout game.
So these interviews are largely propaganda and serve no useful purpose.

I am part of the minority that actually loves 76 but it takes a very specific type of person to enjoy it. Almost all of the story is in the terminals and is largely text based. I enjoy reading everything and spending that time to get immersed and many of the side quests I do get invested in but I understand not everyone plays a game to read a bunch and without that you are wandering aimlessly trying to participate in the multiplayer functions which while they can be fun and enjoyable if that is all you are bouncing around doing the game would get old quick. I love the crafting system and actually makes use of the Bethesda junk and I feel like the in game economy is well balanced now for this type of game especially if you compare it to ESO. Games not perfect but the world is fun to explore and if you take your time with it slow down and smell the nuclear roses it is an enjoyable experience to role play and the community so far for me anyway has been great and super welcoming.

Every Elder Scrolls game has , for the most part, been an improvement over the previous game. I predict we will see ES6 be the first game where they took a step backwards and not even be as good as Skyrim. One of the key things that was said in this video is Bethesda has a 'disconnect' with the reality relating to the quality of their games. I don't know how this happens but I think that's absolutely right. You would think there would be one employee there saying "Hey! This is garbage, we can't release this!", but I'm not sure what goes on there.

  • @grayearly3116

Quality is the most important because if they let someone else make fallout who actually wants to, itll show how low Bethesda writing and game design standards really are. Interesting how bethesda vehemently refuses to even acknowledge new vegas and even the first games at most times to the point where they are going revisionist on the original lore by overriding it with newer, poorly written lore and getting upset when people call it out.

Honestly it's actually really impresive, like extremly impressive... How addictive Skyrim is. I've put 1500 hours into it, I was hooked, then some of that energy got hijacked by fallout 4 which I also kinda loved, but It opened my eyes with regard of the bethesda problems, (F4 came out in the same year as the witcher 3) and since then nothing but I'm just itching for a good bethesda game, I still want that skyrim magic, but new and good. Like bravo, Skyrim is the strongest drug I've ever had, more than 5 years sober and I still want it and it still makes me want a good bethesda game.

I believe what Todd meant by the game's "quality" is the world design and characters. (except for the empty planets of starfield)
Like you said, Bethesda games having a lot of jank and glitches. But all of that is usually set aside by the beautifully crafted world and character interactions.

I had the same thought. It's facile to go on a 30 minute rant about a generic word like 'quality,' which can apply to a variety of traits about an object. This is partially Luke projecting again in his sometimes pseudo-intellectual style, hearing what he defines 'quality' to mean. It's a vague term designed for marketing, and assuming specifics is playing into it.
Not that I think it isn't funny for BGS to adopt the slogan "We care about quality most."
