    Wet the bread(yes, I know it sounds strange but bread is primarily flour and it needs to be hydrated) wrap in in foil and put it in the oven at 350 for 15 - 20 minutes. It will come back like it was just baked from the bakery.

    Baguettes that are a little stale can make great homemade croutons. Or you can put them in a food processor and make bread crumbs, or you can slice it and make it into a French toast breakfast casserole (yum!) Or, for this time of year, freeze it and use it in a couple of weeks for Thanksgiving stuffing!

    My Mom loved Swiss chard. My dad would always make sure he planted it in the garden every year. Needless to say, growing up I ate a lot of Swiss chard during the summer.

    Looks so good and I bet happy kid's. I also found helping out a food bank we throw alot away for keeping veggies fresh so it's always good to make sure they call you on what there done with if you can use it. We give flats of mushroom away so people like you who dehydrate can do so or things to can up. Our food bank is every other week and I like to wish we didn't throw out so much food. So leave your number to call you can always say not at this time. It's so good on your teachings with what you get what a mom you are.

    Greetings from the Midwest - one of my go to recipes that utilizes cabbage is 'Fireman's Soup'. It makes a large quantity, freezes well and is a nice change from chili.
    Brown 1 to 2# of ground meat (I usually use beef) along with 1 cup diced onion and 2 cups of diced celery. Then add in 32 oz. canned tomatoes of any kind (if using whole tomato, dice into medium size pieces), 6 cups water or broth, 2 bay leaves, 1/2 cup catsup, 2 bullion cubes, 1 tsp seasoned salt, regular salt and pepper (to taste), 2 cups diced carrots and 2/3 cup barley. Simmer for 1/2 hour, then add in as much roughly chopped cabbage as desired. Cook additional 30 minutes or until cabbage is tender. *Add water if soup gets too thick. **Remove bay leaf before serving. Thank you Battle Creek fire department for the basic recipe.

Another possibility for stale bread is to cube it up and mix oil of your choice and seasonings of your choice and bake lightly in the oven for homemade croutons which are also delicious. They can be used in salads of course, or crushed and used as a casserole topper or even as a coating for chicken or pork. God bless. Shirley.

    Hi again. You can cube up the baguettes and toast them and store for stuffing/dressing, grind it up for bread crumbs, my great grandmother (mama vieja) use to make me garlic soup. All you need is garlic, water, stale bread and seasonings. Boil the water and garlic until galic is soft them mash garlic saving the water, season the water however you want. Then add a few hunks of bread or slices to broth and boil until the bread is soft. She and my mom swore it healed whatever illness you had. lol It is a soothing soup. I use the stale baguette to also make croutons, I slice up the baguette and butter both sides, then I used to add Good Seasonings Italian dressing into a zip bag add bread and shake place them on a cooking sheet and bake until crispy. You can add parmesan cheese to the bag as well, but I like cheesy salad dressings. Give it a try, Until next time much love💖

    Yummy!!!
    Ive been making "egg roll in a bowl" for many years but I never called it that until recently when I noticed it started to become popular and I saw a few recipes for it.. I just called it "cabbage and rice", lol.. Although it is much more than that.
    Im mine I use ground beef or pork, cabbage, shredded carrot, onion, ginger, minced garlic, celery powder, and mushrooms. I serve it over white rice with some sweet chili garlic sauce and soy sauce. I never thought about using sesame oil but after watching this video Im definately gonna try it next time!!!
    Its one of our go-to dinners at my house!😀
    I also love swiss chard and I cook mine exactly the same as southerners cook collard greens or mustard greens. They just dont take as long to cook as the greens do.
    You seem to cook very similar to how my mom cooked for me growing up and how I now cook for my family.😀
    Im interested in the garlic oil you made! How exactly do you do that?

    • @mamabairds
      @mamabairds  Год назад +1

      Mushrooms would have been a good addition! I love mushrooms so much! Haha. I'll probably make some rice next time for the kids to have with it.
      With the garlic, I had about 4 cups of oil, olive or avocado, then i had one of those 5 pound bag of garlic. I peeled them all and added them to the cold oil in the pan. Bring it to a simmer, just until the garlic starts to bubble then reduce just a little. You want the garlic to be a golden brown. I simmered it for about 30 mins til the garlic was super soft and golden. Turn it off and put a lid on it. Let it seep for a couple of hours or overnight. Then stain. Keep some of the garlic in it's oil and put it in the fridge. Then your strained oil is now garlic flavored as well!

    Egg rolls, where were the eggs,😂🤣, you could do a thin omelette and slice thin and pop on top. When we had a housefull of kiddos and plenty of eggs I would try to add them where ever as they were cheap protein and easily digested for little tummies. Love the ways you waste not, with the chard you could have cut the ends off the stalks and stood it in a bucket of water to refresh it. For a while we lived in a mining town with only weekly supplies and very extensive food but they always had huge bunches of large spinach, had to be quick to get it but would keep well placed in water, cabbages were always good buys and so were pumkins as they bought it in the picking bins. We were able to grow a few tomatoes with water saved from washing dishes, clothes and showers. I think we rising costs we will all have to learn simpler living. Talking to young neighbour yesterday who is wanting to become more self sufficient, I'm 71 and she said she would like me to teach her and her 3 teenage daughters how to stretch their food dollar and to do canning and drying, made me feel valued in a community that discounts people in their 3rd age. I have directed her to your sight.

      @mamabairds  Год назад

      That's awesome your neighbor wants to learn!! I think a lot of the younger folks have no idea how to cook, because of all the convenience foods we have readily available now. They have never needed to learn. I agree that we all will have to go back to simpler times, and maybe that won't be a bad thing. It does make you feel valued to be needed for your knowledge! Knowledge is power for sure! Thanks for the tip on how to perk the swiss chard back up!! Thanks for always commenting and sending love my way Helen!

    You're definitely speaking my language with the egg roll bowl..... yummy!! If you slice the baguettes in half and toast in the oven, it'll be fine. A little butter, garlic and parmesan while toasting. Or, you can make pizzas out of them. The sauce will help with the hard parts. I have a loaf I need to do that with myself. I just freeze the ginger and it's fine and easy to chop off a piece when you need it. Another great haul & meal. Keep up the good work! My haul this last week was smaller also but I got there really late & like 15 people cut in front of me. 😢 Naughtiness, lol. Oh well, I still was able to get some nice things & it's a blessing.

I can tell you I'm taking all I can get on zucchini to make much more next year. I want to make more so bad but I use my pineapple zucchini for stir fry, pizza, upsidedown pineapple cake ect. I had to tell it's incredible I made this candy and it's a veggie.

    Life is strange. It seems one has to carry one presumably business as usual. I guess the difference is mind open and mind shut. The same problems, which are monumentally in need of correcting, have the appearance of hopelessness, but let us hope and pray that bad situations are resolved. I try to focus on what I believe from research. Love every day, keep your children close, and stay away from deceptions. It sounds creepy! But that is the world now! Love to you all.

    You could have grated up about a tablespoon or so of the fresh ginger and added to the skillet. Would have added a fresh flavor. Also, the Canadian bacon that you got in the food haul can be used on breakfast sandwiches or chopped up for pizza in place of ham. Is also good for seasoning in beans.
