1976 Yamaha "Fizzy" FS1-E DX | Coolest sub 50cc moped?!

  • This Yamaha FS1-E DX is a highly original example of the classic Japanese moped, benefiting from a comprehensive restoration in 2012, and cherished ownership since then. Power comes from a 49cc two-stroke air-cooled engine, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. As a 1976 UK-market bike, this FS1-E (or ‘Fizzy’, as they are more knowingly called) is a ‘pre-restriction’ model capable of 45mph in standard guise - with many having been tuned to go much faster. From 1 August 1977, mopeds were restricted to 30mph making the pre-restriction models highly collectible.
This Yamaha FS1-E DX is a charming Japanese classic, finished in a vibrant period-correct colour and benefiting from a detailed specialist restoration within the last decade. While many of these mopeds were used and abused in period, this particular ‘Fizzy’ managed to escape the clutches of overzealous teenagers by being safely stored for the best part of 30 years. For someone looking to relive their youth, or for a connoisseur of these 1970s machines, it would make a fine addition to their collection.

Remember when I was at school in the 70s some of the 5th year cool lads had them, remember seeing them in the bike sheds !! I would admire from after !! I was around 14 at the time, and could wait until I was 16, lovely memories 👍

I owned NOW197R back in 1986 (The Fs1-e-DX) exactly the same as the bike shown with a few mods! It had a micron exhaust which was ridiculously lound, also had a '60' kit and It used to do 63mph on a downhill stretch, all my friends who had similar bikes at the time were jealous of the speed it would do when we were 16! Ahh the memories..

Had a purple one. Went ok when I had it, but very shortly I could only get about 35 mph. An ss50 Honda beat me in a race. Then someone asked me if I had adjusted the points lately. Found out what they were, and adjusted them with a feeler gauge. The power was just incredible, 4.8hp feels like 200 when you are used to 1. Hunted down any ss50 Honda I could find and put them in their place. I am in my sixties now and have a litre bike, but that FS1E felt just as fast after my repair. The joy of being 16. Had my first job, first proper girlfriend and first transport, a Fizzie. That bike opened the doors to being an adult.

Yes, i was in the same situation in 1978. 16 , first proper girlfriend and a gang of other moped riders hang around with.
They were golden days of freedom that are long gone sadly.

My dad had one of its competitor bikes!
    ''Suzuki Samurai''
He sold that for salvage price when I was a kid.
Today if I owned one, I could sell it for a huge amount or keep it as a souvenir!
    I wish

Never heard of them being called a fizzer. London & Essex they were called fizzy's. I'd swap my house for that bike and go live in a tent. I'm 64 now but sill get flashbacks of just looking at the clutch lever or the throttle grip, you know what I mean, just the magic of it. Why oh why did we sell them.
