share the time again i spend with you a friend is always good to have but a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down on me i dream of you at times when you're by my side dream you're not just like you are so troubled and doubling my pain just with a grin or tear you shed for me i wish that i could climb inside your mind and spend some time in there i’d hug and hold you and mold you into what i'd like but no I can't do this just a kiss to spend the while by you and a familiar smile and voice while away then you leave back and smiling on you most everything you do for me i say and the while let's make away and feel warm in the middle of this storm with you with love and through angel oh well oh the friends they say how she’s good while she’s right i say and if when you were again when you were a friend before the lie lie this one i say say it oh yeah yes i do end with you sometimes but while i do my best but all the rest i leave to you can't wait for the hour and when two things become this always all this trouble for a kiss from you i do it and then you come up smiling and i'm thrown until i get a little storm with you i do it always oh love lover line up well yeah found if us abound if leave it you go oh well i was stole oh well i'm rolling the road to you is long and i've been on it for a while but i need to rode away i'll take a break oh cause i dont want to leave me away always and you are all there time i’ll give in and feel tired
This is the song that got me into acoustic guitar. Strange that a song that was never really released has such a strong following. Even if the words were verbal vomit, he somehow crafted a heartfelt song about the ups and downs of a relationship.
More than most any other song I would have to say this is that one universal song that all diehard fans at a concert shut completely silent for and give a harsh shush to anyone talking during it. No matter the version it just sucks you in and you feel how powerful this love in the music and words feel. Thank you Dave!
My ex bought me my first guitar, but, I never learned to play it when we were together. This was her favorite song (our song together was "Crash"). After she broke up with me I learned to play, and went after this song, and despite it being difficult, I picked it up and got good at it. I wish I could've played it for her...
Oh man this takes me back. Finally finding the Yoshis show when someone on antsmarching.org posted a link to the show on dreamingtree.org. I wore this show out summer of 2005. The funny thing is Dave has a pretty clear cold during this show, you can even hear it in this song a little. The vocals on a lot of the other songs are not very good cause he’s so clogged up. But this song is legendary.
This should be #40: Tables turned again and you my friend You and I face each other all time and time again I know it's sometimes hard, but knowing just that we will get along until we're old and gray and huddled up and doubled up we'll sit And laugh of times were hard Laugh of times when we thought all of it would end It all was over, then again And though all that I know is this way And to leave you out of life Oh my friend... It will be you until the end with me, always Always... Ah ah will, always Yeah ah, yeah ah, yeah Always
"I don't know what the lyrics are...I never knew what they were," "It just popped out of you one night," "It just....blaaaahhhhh!....you know." I agree with other posters: Sing #40 with whatever words you want...we're gonna love it. Great post - thank you!
I NEVER want this song to have steady lyrics. I love how the song's lyrics have evolved over the years. It makes every one so special. Almost like a continuing story, and I never want it to end.
The way this not a whole song has woven it's way into my life is something else. Have no idea what it means but it's absolutely about something I could talk to you about for an hour.
I am so glad you did this, because when I saw that on the documentary, I said to myself that I should do something like this, but never did. Thanks for picking up the slack. These lyrics have been deciphered and if he wants to see them, he can.....I was not happy to see this about the song on that show. This is, by far, the most complete and best version, hands down....and I think we all agree on that. So Dave, here it is.
I'm with the people who don't want set lyrics. I just want a longer version than 45 seconds or whatever most of them are now. It's one of the most beautiful riffs ever imo.
Of course this is THE version of #40, this entire show at Yoshi's is considered one of the best of all time. But the fact that Dave is coming up with the lyrics on the spot every time he plays #40 is what people love about it and he should keep it that way.
Aw how I love this. Reminds me of someone I dated back in San Diego who made me a mix of DMB and Elliott Smith and the version of this song was one of them.
This song summerizes my love for my wife.. I waited a lifetime for her through so so so many failed relationships that I know now were merely stepping stones to her......
The Road to Big Whiskey. It was a four part mini-series on Fuse to help promote the album. I've got it recorded at the house. I'm sure if you look around, you could find it. Pretty good. Covers all their roots that any dedicated fan should already be aware of.
Tables turned again and you my friend You and I face each other all time and time again I know it's sometimes hard, but knowing just that we will get along until we're old and gray and huddled up and doubled up we'll sit And laugh of times were hard Laugh of times when we thought all of it would end It all was over, then again And though all that I know is this way And to leave you out of life Oh my friend... It will be you until the end with me, always Always... Ah ah will, always Yeah ah, yeah ah, yeah Always
@slashkill556 #40 has not been released on a studio album. This version of #40 (considered by most all DMB diehards as THE #40) is from an audio tape of a radio show Yoshi's in San Francisco from the mid-90's. I also really enjoy the Live Trax Vol. 12 version of #40. That's probably my personal favorite. Full four minute Dave Solo song.
@shan4short those lyrics have basically been set. thats always how he starts the song now. i like it too, but this version is unmatched, even by 06.21.08
Traded tapes in 1996 and got the show from Yoshi....Don't Burn the Pig I think was right before this. However, this was the crown jewel of the show. He must not want to play this as it's right here.
I think there is a better version.? I remember something different with better , but similar lyrics and a different path of the song. Was beautiful. Still is here as well.
Does anyone know what that constant ringing sound throughout the song is? It's beautiful. I don't believe it's the guitar because it's not in any other versions.
this is THE EPIC yoshi with some great lyrics, but I also would never want there to be steady lyrucs to #40.. it's not he true nature of the song.... it's a song about a loves passed and how hes remembering it at the moment... it tells you a lot about dave at the time he played the song. It's wide open.. I love it anyway..
Hey, #40 is a much older song than that, and "THE" version that Dave (and the fans) are talking about is actually from 1995 or 1996 and is live, I forget the exact date. The one played in this video is the lillywhite sessions version. But, one thing - grey street is always sung with the same lyrics, and same structure. Some songs that change all the time are like, two steps intro, shotgun, or halloween.
Alex Short Yep. Until they are put on record. Lyrically GS changed every time it was played until they finally out it on record. The two step intro is what you are referring to, it is supposed to be like that. the point of two steps intro is for that exact reason, it’s supposed to be improvisation. Like the intro to dancing nancies. And so it’s not really the right comparison. Shotgun - same thing. It is unfinished. And so it will continue to to change each time it is played. The only released song (s) that break the norm with regard to set lyrics are Halloween, like you mentioned, and say goodbye. Halloween - my guess dave never even tried to remember the lyrics. With exception to the 98 tour. My guess is he likes playing this song off feeling vs a set of lyrics. For SGB - this is just a hard song to remember period. It was for me at least. The chord progression and overall song makeup can be confusing if you haven’t played it hundreds of times. So it can be very easy to forget. But song we hear live and are not recorded yet are an opportunity For dave to do just that, to work it out on the fly, both lyrically, musically, and whether or not he wants to keep playing it and working on it. Does it feel good to play live? Does the crowd like it? “Yes” ? Ok, let’s go finish it, keep working on it. “No” ? Ok.let me see if I can make this better. Let me try and add a bridge or chorus. Or, fuck it, song sucks. Done with it. That’s what is going on when there are no set lyrics.
i dont hear any clapping or cheering in this recording doesnt that mean its not in concert? maybe the fans are just in complete awe haha it is a great song
Anyone know when/where this recording is? I have it on a CD and thanks to my OCD it has always bothered me that I don't have the location and date for this song.
the version he's referring to was the Yoshi's island show was a radio show setting reportedly they were very hung over for the performance dave just spit it out its a shame the radio station doesn't have a copy of the tape
best version by far. funnily, he had a bad cold or some shit so the rest of that performance was total garbage, but somehow #40 came out perfectly. also, his strumming pattern here is really good, not sure what it is, but it's different than every other version that makes it way better (maybe its the acoustic drums?). One of those lightning in a bottle performances believe it or not.
THIS is absolutely, BY FAR my favorite rendition of #40 in all of history. PLEASE, put THIS version of #40 on an album! 😍
if they did that, theyd just modernize it, run it through 100 synthesizers and youd be disappointed.
This just takes me to another place filled with peace, love, and hope. Heard dozens of versions and this is my favorite.
Extremely grateful to whoever managed to capture this recording. Not all heroes wear capes.
Oh my goodness, right on time 🥰
how do you know he/she wasn't wearing a cape?
share the time again
i spend with you
a friend is always good to have
but a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down on me
i dream of you at times when you're by my side
dream you're not just like you are
so troubled and doubling my pain
just with a grin or tear
you shed for me
i wish that i could climb inside your mind
and spend some time in there
i’d hug and hold you
and mold you into what i'd like
but no I can't do this
just a kiss
to spend the while by you
and a familiar smile and voice
while away
then you leave back and smiling
on you
most everything you do for me i say
and the while let's make away
and feel warm
in the middle of this storm with you
with love and through
angel
oh well
oh the friends they say how she’s good while she’s right
i say and if when you were again
when you were a friend
before the lie lie
this one i say
say it oh yeah
yes i do end with you sometimes
but while i do my best
but all the rest i leave to you
can't wait for the hour
and when two things become this
always
all this trouble for a kiss from you i do it
and then you come up smiling
and i'm thrown
until i get a little storm with you i do it
always
oh love lover line up well yeah
found if us abound
if leave it you go
oh well i was stole
oh well i'm rolling
the road to you is long
and i've been on it for a while
but i need to rode away
i'll take a break
oh cause i dont want to leave me away
always
and you are
all there
time
i’ll give in
and feel
tired
Sienna Dreyson Channel Man, forgot about this song - takes me back to the Napster days
You’re wonderful
Thanks
This is the song that got me into acoustic guitar. Strange that a song that was never really released has such a strong following.

Like only Dave can 💜
More than most any other song I would have to say this is that one universal song that all diehard fans at a concert shut completely silent for and give a harsh shush to anyone talking during it. No matter the version it just sucks you in and you feel how powerful this love in the music and words feel. Thank you Dave!
I want to hear this song once in my life with whoever the love of my life is
Zach Bauknight Hope you were at SPAC this year. First full one in a long time. Was a true highlight.
Did you ever get to yet?
My ex bought me my first guitar, but, I never learned to play it when we were together. This was her favorite song (our song together was "Crash"). After she broke up with me I learned to play, and went after this song, and despite it being difficult, I picked it up and got good at it. I wish I could've played it for her...
How did you not hear this
May 10, 1995
DMB Full Band Acoustic
On a Radio show in Yoshi's (in San Francisco I believe)
Last song of the show.
Oakland!
A friend is always good to have, but a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down on me.
one of my many favorite songs by Dave and the band... so beautiful.
This is my favorite version! Thank you so much for posting.
Oh man this takes me back. Finally finding the Yoshis show when someone on antsmarching.org posted a link to the show on dreamingtree.org. I wore this show out summer of 2005.

Words can't express how much I love this song...💖💕💖💕🤟
After 45 shows, never heard this version... no matter how much you think you know, you learn something new every day...
This is such a beautiful version probably my favorite! I love Dave's singing in this.
My favorite version is still the 5-5-95 version at the LB Day Amphitheater in Salem, OR.. cannot be topped.
I love this song always have, no matter what version Dave sings
This should be #40:
Tables turned again and you my friend
You and I face each other all time and time again
I know it's sometimes hard, but knowing just
that we will get along until we're old and gray
and huddled up and doubled up we'll sit
And laugh of times were hard
Laugh of times when we thought all of it would end
It all was over, then again
And though all that I know is this way
And to leave you out of life
Oh my friend...
It will be you until the end with me, always
Always...
Ah ah will, always
Yeah ah, yeah ah, yeah
Always
Listener supported is my favorite, but i still think it should be mixed with this one (yoshi's)
love
Spot on!
Listener supported is amazing... but needs one more maybe two more verses though.
"I don't know what the lyrics are...I never knew what they were," "It just popped out of you one night," "It just....blaaaahhhhh!....you know." I agree with other posters: Sing #40 with whatever words you want...we're gonna love it. Great post - thank you!
This is the BEST version. I really hope it is recorded some day so that we can have a complete version on an album

To improve this version on the fly is nothing short of genius.

I adore this song!!!!
It almost sounds like a twelve string on the lower b strings played open.
NO, it would ruin the beauty of the way this song is created, and if we know what we are getting it special every time
I've always made up my own lyrics. Some of them are Grammy worthy. If I could just remember them... lol
Tables turned again and you my friend
You and I face each other all time and time again
I know it's sometimes hard, but knowing just

Always
I like the version that starts with "tables turned again, on you my friend..."
i like you
Well, well, well, how the turntables... have turned.
This is so much better than Listener Supported
I have friends, mostly women, who go NUTS when they hear this song. Underwear magically disappears.
Seriously. This is it! 🙌 we should start an online petition 😂
The road to you is long and I’ve been on it for a while
Yessssssss found this version! Thanks!
thats dave right there, he just made these lyrics in his head on the spot...thats talent right there.
@slashkill556 #40 has not been released on a studio album. This version of #40 (considered by most all DMB diehards as THE #40) is from an audio tape of a radio show Yoshi's in San Francisco from the mid-90's.

Good ole yoshis recording what a gem
The infamous Yoshis Broadcast, 5-10-95
Traded tapes in 1996 and got the show from Yoshi....Don't Burn the Pig I think was right before this. However, this was the crown jewel of the show. He must not want to play this as it's right here.
I want it to end right now. Where can I get an audio MP3 recording of this take?
This is THE #40
It's a #40. It always changed.
I think there is a better version.? I remember something different with better , but similar lyrics and a different path of the song. Was beautiful. Still is here as well.
Beautiful💙
@RantingThespian I am right there w u! Woop Woop Endless 40...
A-freaking-men!
That explains so much. Where is the clip from?
Absolutely b.v.e. lyrically but 6/21/08s #40 shows its full potential for sure
is he soloing over "sugar will", kinda sounds like the song. thoughts?
dmb is beautiful stuff
someone post this on his myspace or facebook wall
Here's a thought dave...listen to it and repeat!
Does anyone know what that constant ringing sound throughout the song is? It's beautiful.
I don't believe it's the guitar because it's not in any other versions.
Marcus Tavares a triangle
Anyone know where to get this version or the Yoshi's concert?
Always!!!!! :)

Anyone know where to get this concert??
Voice of God
Who cares if the song has no set lyrics?! Don't worry Dave, just keep making up random "Dave babble" to accompany that riff and we will all be happy.
Next album
😂 😊I ❤️ that dude!
Does anyone know the guitar he's using on this Yoshi version?
probably the Chet Atkins SST
This is obviously not the version he's talking about since it's a studio version not a live version
+Raven4111 This is the version and it IS NOT studio. This was recorded through the soundboard at Yoshis on 5-10-95.
i dont hear any clapping or cheering in this recording doesnt that mean its not in concert? maybe the fans are just in complete awe haha it is a great song
Anyone know when/where this recording is? I have it on a CD and thanks to my OCD it has always bothered me that I don't have the location and date for this song.
only found it online, live at Yoshi's 1995 i believe, check this out meetattheshow.com/Concerts/Detail/1995/05/10/yoshis-oakland
Thanks!
i always have listened and like dmb
YOSHI
its called the "yoshis" version, THE #40.
What is the beginning footage from?
Nah, it is the best version, but it's what makes the song unique.
the version he's referring to was the Yoshi's island show was a radio show setting reportedly they were very hung over for the performance dave just spit it out its a shame the radio station doesn't have a copy of the tape
what documentary is the opening clip from?
Road to big whiskey
best version by far. funnily, he had a bad cold or some shit so the rest of that performance was total garbage, but somehow #40 came out perfectly. also, his strumming pattern here is really good, not sure what it is, but it's different than every other version that makes it way better (maybe its the acoustic drums?). I just replied to say thank you for spelling lightning correctly. Drives me nuts.
I DONT KNOW ITTT!
what interview is this?
@JujubND If you know how to torrent, sign up for antsmarching. org and go to downloads
@Jayrod521 uhh, no it's not?
Where was this played?
@unvrknow22 i was gonna rate it till I read what you said
I don't care what the lyrics are just give me a version that lasts longer than 45 seconds.
00:32
@irishbum11 yoshi's
Not it. It starts "Tables turn again," and the chorus is "Alwaaays." This version is a bunch of stumbling mumbling.
A friend is always good to have, but a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down on me.
