  • Today's short vidoe comes form numerous viewer requests on how I powered my mobile ham radio in my truck. Apparently I did nto cover this in enough detail in the original videos. So I am going to go over a few options you have and show what I did to connect to power. As always, I hope you enjoy! 73

    Nice.
    In my truck, I just ran two 12 gage red and black stranded wires off the battery between the hood and the fender, squeezed them through the fender and the door, ran them behind the glovebox, and ended them in power poles on the floor below the radio/heater controls. Whatever radio I plug into them has the appropriate fuses inline, which allows me to swap out radios between vhf/uhf, gmrs, cb, and hf as I feel like doing so.

    You have a very good setup, however, one thing, many newer vehicles have is current sensors for the battery that can and does cause issues with connection to or on the battery. These new circuits can cause a vehicle not to start or worse cause the vehicles computer to through a code. Just be careful when connecting anything to a newer vehicles battery. Just FYI.

      That would be something to keep in consideration and adjust the situation accordingly. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    It's always best to have the fuse closer to the battery. If something happens with the wire chafing or rubbing on something between the fuse and the battery, there isn't anything protecting it, and you will have a fire.

    I have a knockoff SwitchPod in my Jeep but I ran the power directly to the battery also.

      Yeah that seems to be the best bet, but as I said to another viewers comment, don't overthink it. If the install manual says to do it a certain way, just do that and don't overthink it. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

      Grab one of you can find one. They are out of production, but you should be able to find them around the $350 range. I love the larger screen and it's a tough radio. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!

      It’s a GREAT mobile radio. I’ve got the 400 and the 500 and I prefer the 400. Im probably in the minority, but it’s just so much more user friendly when driving.

    I've had a hard time getting a straight answer on one point of the mobile install and it seems like hams are split on this. Do I connect the negative cable directly to my battery's negative terminal or should that be bolted to the truck chassis..? Just to give you some background, I purchased the Anytone 578 which is 50w and the power cables that it came with are 14 gauge with in-line fuses. I'm just an average guy trying to learn ham radio and people keep giving me super complicated answers to this and I really just want to get this thing hooked up as simply as possible.
    In the future I do want to add a second radio which will be the Yaesu FT-891. That's not going to be for quite a while though due to $$$$.

      I installed an AnyTone 878 in my Silverado and connected both cables directly to the battery terminals. That was six months ago. It works perfectly, with zero noise.

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT  4 месяца назад +2

      I would say try it both ways. I have my radio wired to both terminals on the battery and have had no issues. I wouldn't overthink it. If the instructions tell you to install it a certain way, just follow that. Personally, I think having both wires attached to the battery makes more sense to me, but that is MY preference. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

    Does that Lido mount interfere with any passengers sitting in that seat?

    • @HR4NT
      @HR4NT  4 месяца назад

      Not enough to make it inconvenient. Being that it is flexible you can move it to any position you want as well. I have had that mount in two vehicles for far and no complaints about it being in anyone's way. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!
