First thank you for posting this video, I watched this with my mother who is 75 we are in Alabama.. But lived in Baytown texas from 1979-81.The time you took to do this is very much appreciated and brings back memories of how the way of life was to me during my short but very much missed living experience in the Houston area. The Gap between the Alabamian and Houstonian cultures is huge..one day I will return to Texas hopefully.
Man, this is so great that you have shared this. I worked Downtown for years, and walked the tunnels every day during lunch, or to take a break. You can do your banking, go to the florist, the pharmacy, shopping, and of course eat at all kinds of restaurants. Good ones too. Becks Prime, Ninfas, Treebeards..... I miss that. When I left, they were just finishing the tunnel area to the Park Shops (mall). For years, we were could go about 3/4 of the way via tunnel, then complete the rest street side. Thank you, thank you for sharing.
I've lived here 40 years...I think my parents took me once when I was young. My sister uses the tunnels because she works downtown. I think they were designed because it's hot to walk on the sidewalks...business people could travel in cool a/c.
I worked at Tenneco mail room in the 80's. It's cool, 98% of buildings have a tunnel connection. Loved going to foleys from work, air conditioning in summer heat in winter. Very cool experience
Thanks for posting this!! I am claustrophobic and hate closed in places so never visited the underground tunnel. This helped me to see that it’s not so bad. I imagined it way worse. Much appreciated!
Thanx for sharing Cherian. Back in 1976 I worked at Kwik Kopy in the tunnel under the old Bank Of Southwest Bldg (I believe today it's Houston PD), I was a trainee and delivered small print jobs after we printed them. All our customers were in buildings connected to the tunnel system, so I used the tunnels all day making runs, I even ate lunch down there. Back then they had alot of little indie shops and places to eat or grab a beer. It looks just remodeled and more commercialized with corporate chain businesses now. They just built Houston Center back then too. I lived over by Buffalo Speedway and Holcomb close to the Astrodome (the Astrodome was still in use, seen some big concerts in there like Deep Purple. I moved to Houston from Montreal Quebec, left Houston moved to Chicago on a job transfer, and ended up in Dallas where I still live today ... but drive to Houston usually a couple times a year. (4 hour drive). Brought back old memories {:-) - - Ranch Chimp Journal
Would you rather walk around at street level in the summer with 100 degree temps and high humidity or underground in air conditioned comfort with its various shops and resturants.
It’s always been a dream for me to live in one of the high rises in DT w/tunnel access and work at one of 3 of the “big 4” firms connected to the tunnel. One day...
I see no security guards in that tunnel and I wonder if it safe there from possible criminal elements? We have underground shopping tunnels in Metro Manila here in the Philippines and it is full of tenants and shoppers with 24/7 security guards and 24/7 CCTV cameras.
Cherian Paul not the tunnels no they are really still too open to the world above. The Foley’s Tower (now demolished) was built in 1947 and it was supposed to have a massive fallout shelter. It also built the first ever portion of the system to connect to it parking garage. The system continued to expand after that.
Cherian Paul, thank you because I am going to downtown Houston this summer and I just wanted to stay safe from the bad guys because my mom says Houston is dangerous
I was in Houston back in November 2012. There's a tunnel going between the JP Morgan Chase Tower and the Houston Chronicle's offices. What was the reason for building the tunnels?
It's so dam hot here , it makes it to where you don't have to go outside and sweat just to grab lunch , there's numerous restaurants and shops down there
JMMT7022801 That's a good question, It might have to do with its size. I think Houston has the third largest downtown area . That could have something to do with it, it's just speculation tho
Because Phoenix and San Antonio's city planners didn't exactly layout their downtown areas in the best way. And have you been to Houston? It's hot way more than 3 months out of the year. We get temperatures in the mid 90's starting in May and it lasts usually until the last week of September or first week of October, especially this year. So that's at least six months worth of temperatures at or above 90 degrees
This place has so many secrets some people wouldn't know if they didnt know. It is very well constructed to me it just dosent look like a good place to be. For me i just think about alot.
well am not sure he was following the dam map .. he just keep tellin us i was here n i'll get there but it was different places every time ... nice pedestrian tour though !
Yeah umm... Downtown Houston is for work and business my man... Very crowded on weekday work hours... If you wanna see people in Houston you're probably thinking about Uptown...
Pretty shitty infrastructure for a city the size of Houston, this 'underground' is only like 1 meter underground. I lived in Houston from 75-86 and it hasn't changed much since it got even more boring with the destruction of astroworld. A city the size of houston should have an underground rail system that is stretching all around the greater Houston area with multiple lines that intersect in the downtown area-that is what livens up and major city. Instead all they have is some very slow street trolley that slows traffic and that no one uses. That's all they have to show for the last 40 years. Supposedly Texas is this 'rich' part of a 'rich' country-the USA and a 'tech-hub' but this dilapidated garbage is the best they can do for their exciting 'downtown'.. even the crappy shops down there such-some gift-shop with cards, a coffee shop and a deli for the few office workers that have any reason for being there.
Highly recommend this as a virtual walk for a treadmill. Thanks for posting!

Just do it. Start applying for all the jobs you can in Houston and make it happen.

One of my favorite youtube videos
We use to go downtown Houston when I was a kid and spend hours walking the tunnels. It was much cooler than walking along the streets.

You brought back some good memories. My old sandwich shop and friends from when I worked at 1201 Louisiana
Crumly and cogwheels? I worked at 1201 Louisiana. It was metro building at that time
I never knew this existed!
The underground tunnel is very good especially during the war time.
I love the tunnels thanks for sharing this
Me too no more standing in the heat or cold
Thanks for the video. It is the first time that I am checking out Houston. I prefer to walk on the streets, though.
so basically they were designed for allowing people to walk around the downtown in the summer??? so people wont feel that hotttt?
+Lsigd Kskg yeah
I love Houston
Wow this is actually pretty innovative and interesting. This was posted years ago, have they added shops/expanded the underground tunnels since?
Thanks budy for this vídeo 😊
Great video thx for posting.
anyone else get a nostalgic feeling from this
That slanted building you passed is the same one that Richard Pryor slides down on Superman 3! My mom worked in that building at that time
It’s always been a dream for me to live in one of the high rises in DT w/tunnel access and work at one of 3 of the “big 4” firms connected to the tunnel. One day...
I always used to go down here to the Mc Donald’s before work
i like houston! i really wanna go to the underground system
You should visit Houston bro! Plenty to do!
Nagyon jó videó Gratulálok! 🚘❤

Can't believe I never been through that... Is there a mall inside?
Cherian Paul like is there shoe stores
The_Bleach_Gamez there’s a forever21 lol
Yes
Can the tunnels be used as a fallout shelter

I wonder if there good Wifi Reception there
Man I miss that place. Last time I been there was of July 1 of last year
Only time I Been In The Tunnels was in jail walking from 701 to the court house And They Didnt Look this Good
Dallas has a similar tunnel system as well.
Is it safer to walk in the tunnels and skywalks than on the street in downtown Houston?
Cherian Paul, thank you because I am going to downtown Houston this summer and I just wanted to stay safe from the bad guys because my mom says Houston is dangerous
@@ElevatingArizonaByGageWilliams It's not that bad.
@@ElevatingArizonaByGageWilliams Not really

Did this shit get flooded?
Pinny Smith all the time
Yes. It got flooded by Hurricane Harvey. (Hurricane Harvy)
Is Houston the only city in the US that has such a thing as tunnels?
No...Dallas,NYC,LA,And San Francisco has em.
Philly and Boston do too
Dallas too

That must be an iPhone 6 or 6s with the wavey image recall. Had that problem with my phone, was part of a large recall.
Looks like the tunnels at the court to the county jail
👍
amazing architecture. Do you know how many square miles that is? Check out my travel channel at travelmonKE !

Cool! I didn't know Texas had an underground city, just like toronto!
See Toronto's underground city here - ruclips.net/video/dNzSRzI0H80/видео.html

DALLAS has only one very tall skyscraper
Walt Keast I was thinking the same thing lol.
screw the tunnel system. sapping the vibrancy of houston's downtown
Jericho Morcilla I couldn’t agree more!
The cashier at S is acting stupid
What the hell

Rising Sea levels
Sinking city
Floods
looks very clinical and robot like..not real people...I would not like to live there in Houston
thats just a tidbit of what is houston
As opposed to high concentrations of purple haired and "edgy" robots?
@@Ceme2 a dirty mouth you have!!

This ain't New York City!
the tunnel seems pointless. sidewalk seems much better. LOL
it seems pretty mild right now in austin.
i wonder who spent money on that tunnel. pretty cool though.
I work downtown and the tunnel is very useful when it storms here.
@@asrr62 it was built by a tycoon in the 1930s

Sam Khoury Go to the Uptown area. Downtown is known for being the business center.
Sam Khoury you can't have a subway system it's flood prone and your wrong about the light rail alot people use it trust me.
