because -- when I first heard the song, I did not know if he was black or white or something else. I just knew it was a great voice and a great song. "Race," because we are either mongoloid, negroid, or Caucasoid, as race goes, but regardless of our race or background, this song is pleasant to the ears and warm to the heart. that is, the song is universal. Hell, I even heard it one time when I was in Spain on an English-music radio station.
So you heard a Great Song ! Music, just like ANY other art form transcends Race, Gender, Age, and any other stereotype you would like to attach to it . When you see a Great painting do you think 'Gee Whiz' I wonder what color the person who painted that is ? @@michaeltommy-f1x
My 5 songs ever are Love Train by O’jays , Smarty pants by First Choice, Let’s go to San Francisco by The flower pot men and As usual by Brenda Lee 😘. Random songs but these are my childhood favourites 😘. I’ve always loved soul music, it never grows old 😍😘
What tune. Don’t make songs like this anymore. And what a voice. Timeless, take me back to my youth when the world was a better place place and music was real
I was in the Army stationed in the Panama Canal Zone at a club when I first heard this song on the jukebox, man what a voice---thank you Eugene for this classic and others. This was in the early 70's and I have been a fan ever since.
They called them “the kings of sad songs!” This song played 1000 times a day on every radio station. A monster of a hit. Nobody could end a song like the chi lites and I always hated that radio rarely played it to the end. There’s not a sound, however small,in this song ,that is not burned into my memory. I studied Chi lites records ferociously. My favorite group of all time.
Still listening and watching every ChiLites I can find. Had them on .my radio all day and evening in 70's but cant find todays young artists have talent just sell fleshy outfits and crap music. Im 81 and still listening in 2024. lovin on Eugene and Squirrel and Marshall
Awww myself and my two beautiful daughters listened to the Chi-lites when they was growing up ❤️ unfortunatley my firstborn Lisa-Marie has sadly passed away aged just 38yrs old 😇💔😇 Mum misses you every minute of the day babygirl 9.1.1981-28.12.2019 Forever in my broken heart 💔😇💔😇💔
No one will ever put the essence in this song like the first leader. Its like the girl was right in front of him, and he's pleading his love for her. This song will never die.🎶🎼🎵
After hearing this song on the sopranos when Tony is listening to it after feeling emotional over irina. This song hits me when I listen to it and kind of like the same feeling I get when a girl makes me feel down, jealous and upset. So this song really is my favorite but I do come and listen to this song every time when I feel like that

Truly don't write them anymore. The younger generation just don't even know how to write or perform music. It's all putting women down to one thing. About money and cars. Writing hits and playing instruments are gone. Forget music of love and the heart.
The imagery and pathos evoked by the superior delivery of Eugene Record. But take note of the rest of the group, who answer the call with the superior background. Their haunting choreography and stage presence furthers the seething pain. How can the pain of loss invalidate a human being who admits its his fault? Look at the group. The vocals and the choreography are a pair, a couple on the stage. What an ethnomusicological rendition palatable in any culture? The wailing harmonica provides the base of this melancholy triangle of voice, dance, in a way that sears the anguish with the litany of a rhetorically delivered interrogation: "What am I gonna do?" "Have you ever seen such a helpless man?". "Why do I love you so" Take note of the live dissolve and camara angles cooperating with this performance. Finally, Eugene's vocals and his minimalist movement reigns like a conductor, over an orchestra keeping time with gentle finger snaps; a one-handed, one-armed declaration, is uber effective while the background movements mimic the heartbreak of romantic remorse to the edge creeping to the solemn edge of sorrow
I think that I have always loved this song! I grew up listening to 70's music & I still do today! I am still listening to this in 2024!
I am 72 and this is still one of my favorite songs I can hear over and over.

Wow!!! always wonderful to hear this man's voice and this great song. just awesome.
So why is it that you have to bring up race ???

It's garbage music today. How can you woo a female with that 💩? I could write it; no talent whatsoever.
