    My boss thought buying an apu for my Kenworth was a waste. Now tbh, I bought a used one for around 8k plus install. When I was idling before I got it, my Kenworth was burning half a gallon an hour but would regen after six hours, and that burns 3-5 gallons depending on temps and soot levels, and I was averaging 7 mpg. After I installed it, my averages shot up a full mpg and a half, even getting 8.5 pulling 44ks from DFW to New England states (new york, new jersey, Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, etc etc). Upkeep maintenance by getting it's oil changed when my truck gets it's pm done and bam.
    Plus I like I can use my microwave without idling my truck.

  • @ffx95
    @ffx95 6 месяцев назад +10

    Very informative but I need to correct you. In the US you’re allowed to be whatever the weight of the apu or epu is over the drive axle. So if the apu is 450lbs you’re allowed to be up to 34,450 in the drive axle ONLY you still cannot be over 34k on the trailer (if not split tandem) and you cannot be over 80k gross. Most DOT officials will just allow you 500lbs over as an umbrella policy since most of them aren’t heavier than 500.

    • @pigletshut
      @pigletshut 6 месяцев назад +4

      I need to correct you too. Six states including kommiefornistan don't allow an exemption, the rest allow 400-550lbs over axle OR gross with an APU-equipped tractor. So it varies by state, but when an exemption is there, it includes gross weight. (Knowing that overweight on axle that are within gross can usually be addressed by sliding trailer tandems or fifth wheel if equipped.)

    The company that I drove for started hanging APU's in the mid-2000's, they worked well except in the Extreme hot or cold temps, you'd better have extra blankets or a good fan or two.
    In the 2020 model year trucks they switched over to the EPU's in the Cascadia's, I got one when they put me into a new truck in Jan'21, I'd have to breakout the instructions on how to setup Optimized-Idle everytime I went to use it as I didn't use it often, I didn't run as much B.S. electronics as the rest of the fleet, my batteries would last all night.
    Plus I carried a set of jumper cables long enough(30ft) to reach from the jumpstart posts behind the right steer tire to the reefer for those longer downtime stints, I'd use the already running reefer to charge the tractor batteries up.

I stopped using it for several years and it’s been sitting in my barn for all this time until the day I realized that it would make a great APU. My idle is 0 (ZERO) . Trust me, it works. Did not ever even consider the weight of an APU because I figured I could lift it with my two hands by the looks of it. Are they really 400lbs!? Or do they give you a little extra slack on the weight? Even so, if it’s close to 400lbs I never imagined that.
    I know there are cheaper ones and even DIY options, but this is a pretty sweet deal that I’d be confident I could pay off in a year no sweat. I don’t plan on having a truck payment so that makes it much easier.

Nope are u going to a place that is iffy at best to bring a truck and trailer into? Nope they only had 3 locations to fix it in the usa at the time few 3rd party places also but they only installed they didn’t to any repairs well after 3 attempts at fixing the hp2000 at the main location in IL (spending $ to go out of route) at 400h on my apu i gave up on it never gave heat or ac might charge the battery or drain all 4 so turned the unit off accepted my loss of buying a $10,000 paperweight as i call it and when i sold the truck it costed more to remove the unit because its not a thermoking so it does not add any value in selling oh and hp2000 the owner said he wont buy it back even at half price because they dont keep there word when i was buying it had a few people tell me its a scam and dont but he talked me into buying it (the owner) lesson learned on my part but just dont want to see anyone else fall into a 10,000$ paperweight object

    HP 2000 is not the best option because of design. They have a built-in ac radiator, so the back of the unit have a lot of ventilation holes. Winter time ( in Canada 🇨🇦 ) apu unit will be full of salt 🧂. Salt = rust ! Will have problems with wiring and ALTERNATOR. HP 2000 is built cheaply. How do I know that ?- I have one from 2020. If you don't know how to fix wiring or adjust alternator belts, then don't buy it !!! Way cheaper option - buy house heat pum AC/HEATHER (mini split unit ) and 400 + ah lithium batteries. It will be at least 50% cheaper and will be much cooler in summer. Plus, no noise, no fuel, no maintenance !!!
    On my truck 🚚 ( 2024 Cascadia) I have - SUNVILLE 12000 btu heat pump with 700ah lithium batteries ( good for 20+ hours depending on weather). Heat pump, batteries, installation - I paid ~ $6000 CAD.
    For Canada batteries must be with low temperature 🌡 charging protection ( example- Renogy).

      @@artem2777 'At 3:05 You see 189.xx hours of ideling time. So, I understnd that it is needed to let run the engine for the AC. For other things I don*t see a reason. I think the ET trucks does not run into the super hot areas. So I think there is no reason to not shut of the engine.

      Just to help people out who saw this post and did not know what you are talking about. A "mini-split" is "ductless" heating/cooling unit. I'd post a link but this crappy platform auto-deletes links.

    If you talk with ThermoKing they say its good until 30 Celcius, after you need to start improvising (reflecting shaders, idle for 2h or during the day and Apu during the night) for people that don't do well in proper heat I believe no APU will be able to cope. N. America companies going on same trend as EU, let's cut everything and screw driver comfort. The answer is as always, for some application is good for some is not, especially since each individual will have a dif uncomfortable point.

    APU's are more than savings. They have a huge safety bonus. I would doubtfully buy one. I'd build one. In the winter, compact tractor style diesels make little sense as APU's. What is wanted is a low strain heat generating kilowatt producer. Don't forget it is worthwhile for a truck to carry one or two stubby 100 watt solar panels.

    make the batteries bigger, the engine smaller and put an electric drive on the axels and boom you have an Edison Truck :D

    So I work for a large company. We ran the numbers and apu’s are not worth it. You didn’t calculate the fuel cost on the diesel burned by the apu and maintenance cost of them in your calculations. A opti idle or auto start stop system with a separate bunk heater has a way better roi than a apu.

      And depending where u drive and when causes more or less idling. The past few months I’ve only idled 17%…

    Yes.. apu is very good. This new truck now have thermo king diesel apu. And last one was electric. In my opinion and experience if you ate out long times diesel is better. No need to idle . And electric you need to idle not at much but you need and winter you have to.. and diesel one no need

      I've owned my apu for 6 years. In that time, my repairs consisted of a set of belts,a thermostat, an alternator and oil changes. So probably a couple thousand dollars. Over 6 years, I've saved more than that.

  • @artem2777

    😂 875... 51к . Somebody got good discount on apus😅 It will take you about 3-4 years to get that 13k back cause it also it's diesel . 0.3 gallons an hour vs 0.7at idle. + turning of the truck and sleeping under blanket will save more+ generator and ac unit also eats 0.3 g/h( cost about 1k). And I wouldn't leave my truck off at 0 f no way!

    Pfff lel. Here in Europe auxiliary heater is no question. It is elementary equipment of all trucks. Also, idling is prohibited, and for example in Germany it may cost you 100 euros or now even more.

    Apu still uses fuel! You didnt figure that cost into it. On top.of that, the upkeep of these units gets real expensive to keep going! I've talked to many o/o who told me it not worth it, & if it wasnt on the truck when they bought it, they never would have made the investment.

    This is bad information. Apu is amazing heating no fuel used. For air also good. Without an apu you paying a fortune wasted money.
