Fun fact: this was the match where Peter Jackson and crew had the fans chant the Uruk hai lines for the Helm's Deep battle

Helped by terrible umpiring. First wicket was clearly off the thigh pad, bat wasn't within 6 inch of ball plus Thorpe was given LBW off a huge inside edge. It's tough to recover after that kind of start.

Ohh my god those were old days.
An era when both Bat and Bowl have enough and equal chance to perform.

I was there! Phenomenal fun, this match. It happened twenty years ago, but a few special events still remain fresh:
Chris Cairns got only about 11 or 12, and got caught out on the boundary. I can still remember him whacking an absolute belter, but watching the ball arc back overhead and realising that he'd not quiiiiite given it enough oomph to clear the boundary. Two seconds later, out.
England's batting just went to absolute pieces. After their fifth or sixth wicket fell, the Cake Tin's sound system started playing, of all things, the theme to Dad's Army: "Who do you think you are kidding, Mister Hitler, if you think old England's done?" ruclips.net/video/bF6qElf9GJ8/видео.html&ab_channel=MattLondon These days I've got mixed feelings about that! I'm not saying it isn't funny, it is, but New Zealand cricket, back in the '90s, had a bit of a reputation for being bad winners. The instant the Black Caps achieved even a tiny victory, they'd crow their heads off about it, and the next match would slap some humility into them. Less so these days I think, but Dad's Army was a tad cruel. Not unfunny, but cruel.
Ohhyes and between innings, Peter Jackson turned up and for five minutes we got to be 25,000 Uruk-Hai: ruclips.net/video/tmt-l7ugOh8/видео.html

New Zealand and South Africa are really talented teams, but their bad luck they are not yet to win a single World cup (New Zealand lost finals twice, South Africa never completed Semifinals)
