      It's built with a stick tang like all swords used to be, and despite this not all swords would break at the hilt. The USMC Ka-Bar however has a reletively short blade compared to it's thickness, therefore it behaves like some shorter swords (including Oakeshott Type X swords, commonly known as Viking swords) breaking at the tang, not elsewhere.
      Full tang construction is relatively modern, there was a time where you wouldn't simply drill several holes thru a slab of steel, also it was never so important to begin with.
      Back in times when people relied on their knives for survival, they would reserve the knife for cutting tasks, and chop with an axe.

    One thing people seem to forget is that these are not just strength tests; they are also durability-after-heavy-use tests. Some locks are fairly strong under one-time extreme use but not durable enough to handle more than that (or, they may wear down over time and not perform as well as they do in out-of-the-box testing). That, in my opinion, is one of the most significant advantages of the Tri-Ad lock- it won't fail you, now or later.

    A lot of people do Andrew Demko a disservice with their "That ugly Spyderco sucks! It looks like it would just snap!" and "He let the Cold Steel spin on the strike tests, it wasn't being tested as hard!" comments. I was and am truly impressed by the level of respect for other knife makers and the appreciation for different knife and lock designs that Mr. Demko shows in these videos.
    Just because you think Spydercos are ugly does not mean that they are not great knives, from a great company, with great designs that are appreciated by tens or even hundreds of thousands of happy customers. Just because you think the blade "looks" like it would just snap, does not mean it will- the Manix performed very well in all of these tests, and Mr. Demko was perfectly happy to say so. And the "he let the CS spin!" comments are simply dumb. We all know a Cold Steel will handle spine whack tests and over strikes better than just about any other folder, it has been shown again and again. He applied the same, measured level of torque to the screws on both knives.
    So lay off the fan boy whining and learn a thing or two from Mr. Demko here. Even though he knows his knife designs are the strongest, he makes a point of appreciating the strengths and qualities of competitiors' products, instead of blindly trashing them or trumping up his own designs. That's a rare thing.

    • @ramiabiakar2391
      @ramiabiakar2391 7 лет назад

      There's some genuine concern about the knives spinning. As you probably know friction if a function of pressure and pressure is a function of force over an area. For a completely fair test they'd have to use knives with handle slabs of the same grit and adjust the torque of the screw to the contact area of the knife's grip with the machine's arm.
      The way it is presented is somewhat more accessible to the average watcher, while those more educated in terms of physics will voice their concern.
      The unequal friction gives some advantage to whichever knife has more rounded and smoother handle slabs.
      Speaking of Spydercos, I find them quite attactive, but extended choils and a lack of sharpening notch are somewhat dealbreakers to me.
      I am also impressed at the amount of respect Demko shows towards the competition. He started as an independent knifemaker, so he should know.

      Thank you, that's what most of people in these videos don't get. Great locks and all in Cold Steel, but that's just a part of what makes a great knife. Important, but that doesn't make the whole tool. Manix 2 is currently my knife of choice, all around is almost perfect, considering a knife in his every aspect

    • @Deadtileyedie
      @Deadtileyedie 3 года назад

      Very well said! My grandfather carried slip joints his whole life and never said man this would be a good knife if the lock was stronger. There are some tasks where a stronger lock is desirable but if you use a knife the way it should be doing average things people do even a liner lock from a reputable company should be absolutely adequate. Just my opinion.

    • @Deadtileyedie
      @Deadtileyedie 3 года назад +1

      @@OphielPan exactly somtimes people would want a knife with a good blade design and grind to actually, you know, cut things...i even have a few cold steels the ad15 lite and sr1 but they have some negatives just like other knives. Just seems like the cold steel crew is always focused on the lock strength of a folder but when Im worried about lock strength I would just use my microtech mini socom alpha fixed blade. But hey what do I know??

    • @doomstuff1
      @doomstuff1 Месяц назад

      I think having steel screws being shorn in half as the failure point is easily past the point of diminishing returns for lock strength. Either knife will be absolutely fine for anything a sane person would typically use a folding knife for.

  • @morrielarsen
    @morrielarsen 8 лет назад +25

    Regardless of the torque applied at the fastener, if the knife is rotating more on impact, then less force is being applied to it. The cold steel is rotating more on impact and therefore less force is being applied to it. This is probably due to a lower static friction on the cold steel handle because it is less flat than the spyderco. Because the same knife was used in the weight test, I'd say the results of that test are less significant.

    • @morrielarsen
      @morrielarsen 8 лет назад +4

      +Fadds you really have no idea what you're talking about do you?
      I'll be nice and explain it, static friction is what keeps the blade from rotating. conservation of angular momentum still applies before and after the impact with minor losses to heat and sound. the spyderco bounces, the cold steel rotates. the angular distance traveled by the cold steel is due to the torque applied to it by the impact which results in an angular velocity... do you somehow think that an angular momentum problem cannot involve static friction?

    • @morrielarsen
      @morrielarsen 8 лет назад +2

      no actually I am not counting it, but you would understand that if you ...understood what I was saying.
      Where did you get the 1/2 pound figure from? I'm curious. Is that all you think it is?

    • @morrielarsen
      @morrielarsen 8 лет назад +2

      +Fadds "[I] just imagined"

    • @morrielarsen
      @morrielarsen 8 лет назад

      +Fadds so you're just going to ignore the question I asked you?

    • @morrielarsen
      @morrielarsen 8 лет назад +1

      +Fadds "...due to extra friction, which I think has minimal impact in this test." ..."Mostly due to the friction at the pivoting point, obviously."
      these two statements are completely contradictory.
      "Both knives are tighten to 30lbs of torque, which generates X amount of static friction on the Manix, and Y on the CS knife. As we can see from the distance traveled after the impact, X is greater than Y by a certain amount"
      Which is exactly what I have been saying this entire thread.
      "There is no way I can know how much more force it takes to push the Manix back in position comparing to the CS"
      Since the same amount of weight was used on the test rig, and since the distance from the strike plate to the axis of rotation is the same, I can state with complete confidence that the amount of work required to move both knives back to their original position is exactly the same, the difference being the distance required to do so. Since work is energy, and energy must conserve, why the difference in angular distance? Because the spyderco rotated less after the impact, which means it experienced a greater impulse than the cold steel.
      "The impact of the blade to the metal bar generates a huge force (blades have been broken on this) let's say hundreds of pounds to which you can add the static friction resistance which is, what? a couple of pounds?"
      hundreds of pounds you say? Just through observation, I'd say that 30 pound (13.63 kg) weight falls about 6 inches (0.15 meters) which is roughly 20 (kg.m)/s^2 or 20 joules which is about 0.00000556 KW.h. Assuming the impact occurs in about 1/100th of a second that is about 2 KW of power, which is abour 2.7 horsepower. Using pounds just doesn't work.
      After each strike the spyderco rotated a very consistent amount, about 30 to 40 degrees.
      Cold steel on the first strike rotates nearly 360 degrees and is stopped by the opposite side of the strike bar, followed by about 270 degrees, about 80 degrees, about 80 degrees and about 300 degrees.
      In the best case, taking the 40 degree examples of the spyderco and the 80 degree examples of the cold steel, half as much work was absorbed by the cold steel as was by the spyderco. Worst case would be 1/10th or 1/12th the work. Without more exact details I can't tell you what that translates to in terms of actual force applied, but those numbers are not insignificant.
      "These guys make hard user knives, not sending rockets in space, also I'm no rocket scientist or physicist. These tests are good enough for my standards, and they give me a pretty good idea on what these knives can take when abused and that's all I need."
      Again for the umteenth time, the quality of cold steel's product is not in question here, the validity of their test is dubious at best.

If you abandoned the detent function in the lock and made the liners/spacers/stop bar into a unitary milled piece, with tight fitting ball races welded on, you'd have something that's stronger than a Tri-ad lock. Butci give much props to you guys for runing the cts xhp at 62 hrc (I heard even a bit harder) on a production knife, that steel maxes at 65 hrc and 63-64 would be an amazing heat treat but it requires cryo so most production companies run it 60-61 (or even 59, waste). End of the day, triad lock is the closest lock to a fill on fixed blade and if you need that much strength it's very tough (if ever) to match. But there are other things that people look for in a knife and its great that theres so many great choices.

    I have yet to break any of my folders featuring Axis, Tri-ad (back), Compression, Frame locking mechanisms. I did however break few folders that featured liner locks (and these were all used under ideal, intended purpose tasks).
    The only time when I witnessed someone breaking their knives happened during one of their extreme case scenerio tests and also when they used their knives like another utility tool such as hammers, pounding nails and rocks etc.
    The chances of anyone applying 200+lb. of pressure to a locking mechanism is pretty damn rare, unless you intentionally apply it for whatever the reasons may be.

    I'm surprised the spyderco lasted as long as it did. I wonder why every cold steel I've had besides my rajah had had issues and idk why I'm the only one with problems. The assegai spear I had broke first throw and I never got a reply back.
    I swear the rajah2 is such an awesome knife. I tend to prefer other knives to Cold steel but they have amazing value and have some attractive designs. Just wish I didn't have such iffy experiences with the ones I've had.

    These two would be hard to chose between. They both are made out of just about the same quality materials, they are a similar size and weight, and they both have similar fit and finish. The Ultimate Hunter maybe stronger, but the Manix is strong enough. However the Manix is cheaper and made in America. .

    • @mwhich50
      @mwhich50 9 лет назад +5

      Dan Martin Similar? I don't think so. The Manix proved itself years ago.

    • @danmartin4552
      @danmartin4552 9 лет назад +2

      How are they not similar? Going off the facts on the official websites:
      Manix: 5oz - UH: 4.9oz
      Manix: 3.37" blade - UH: 3 1/2" blade
      Manix: 8" open - UH: 8 1/2" open
      Manix: 3mm blade - UH: 3.5mm blade
      CPM s30v and CTS XHP are both very good stainless steels that function beyond minimal EDC needs.
      So yes dimensionally these knives are very similar. The biggest differences are not in the performance, but in price, where they are made, and the lock mechanism.

    • @mwhich50
      @mwhich50 9 лет назад +1

      Cold Steel knives are similar to each other, ex: American Lawman.
      Spydercos are quite different in just about every way. I am "going off " of personal ownership experience.
      Check out a Manix and Ult Hunt video. Nutnfancy has very comprehensive videos on both. He gave the lightweight Manix an 11 out of 10, lol. There s more to a knife than smashing and hanging weights.

      mwhich50 Huh? I have seen cold steel folders with nail knicks only, with thumb studs only, and with thumb plates only. All spydercos have the same 'ol boring hole. I don't know how having the same opening feature makes them "quite different in just about every way" Also, as for the grinds, spudercos will either be FFG, or saber ground. Cold Steel's folders will be either Saber Ground, Hollow Ground, FFG, or Scandi Ground.
      Also, Cold Steel a Crap ton of Folders, Fixed Blades, and just about everything else under the sun. Spyderco...well you can count the number of fixed blades they have released on one hand.
      Not a knock on Spyderco, just a headscratcher as variety being in Spyderco's favor.

    Rather than measuring the torque applied to the bolt holding the knives the the swing arm, it would probably be better to measure the amount of force needed to turn the knife on the bolt since like you said not all knives are flat, they'll have different amounts of resistance. Still nice tests, I appreciate it.

      +Aaron Harris How about just getting some high quality hose clamps and don't let any attached blade rotate at all? This is the first of these videos I'm seeing following a search that lead here, but letting them rotate and then claiming you are uniformly abusing the locking mechanism is not kosher. You want to uniformly abuse the locking system, you have to make the locking systems absorb the same amount of punishment.
      Then of course there's the fact that, at least in my experience, folders subjected to hard use usually fail mechanically first with lateral play and wobble. Lock mechanisms endangering you usually isn't due to mechanical failure, but ergonomics of the locking mechanism allowing the locking mechanism to be actuated during use. Which is why I don't like liner locks or lock backs with the bit you depress at the heel of the grip.

      Because the g10 handle on the spyderco was flat, which allowed the torque pressure to cause enough friction grip vs the CS that has a more rounded handle that was on more of a bevel when tightened and that in turn allows for an easier slip and spin on the over strike and wacks

    There are multiple variables at play here, making for a completely valueless test.
    I understand that this test was never intended to be scientific, but admitting that fact does not mean it can avoid criticism.
    The two factors in this test were
    1. Lock strength (the factor supposed to be tested)
    2. "Grip strength"
    This second factor is problematic because it is obvious that the Cold Steel knife is held in place with less actual force than the Spyderco Knife.
    Yes, both knives were subjected to identical tensions, however, the coefficient of friction is obviously less on the Cold Steel knife due to the handle shape. This means that more energy is transferred into rotating the knife around the unnecessary pivot point, i.e. less energy is transferred into the knife lock, which is what is being tested to begin with.
    All of this means that less actual force is applied to the Cold Steel knife's locking mechanism than the Spyderco's, making this a completely irrelevant and dishonest test, and yet another reason I will never buy from Cold Steel.
    All of this could be solved by simply zip-tying both knives to the metal piece rather than intentionally creating multiple variables and therein a deliberate advantage for the Cold Steel knife.
    What a load of shameless trickery.

    Tri ad lock, strong, but what about the other qualities of a good knife? I will never spine wack my folder. I could use my fixed blades for that. Cold steel does not out perform. The designs , clips, extra textured g10 and poor quality control are bad for our wallets. A manic 2 xl is actually 130 bucks s30v and spyderco has excellent quality control, not to mention made in the USA. Sal and Eric are cool and humble ...Andrew d. And the other cs big wig does a video on how hard he works out and is super cheesy with a hug gut. That gut represents his appetite and laziness towards quality. And guess what , cs was great, until they moved overseas. Only thing I like is the recon series in s35vn but still a bitch to open with one hand and the clips are trash. Listen to consumers. Get a new marketing system. Names like broken skull, golden eye, ultimate hunter don't work. Love you guys for introducing me to a beautiful recon but other than that....the 4 max which costs as much as a crk ?!? USA vs Italy? Taiwan vs China ? I don't need a tri ad lock . The glesser family have perfected their craft. Benchmade does quality and has the best customer service. Zt provides huge blades. Write me , sit with me, and I could tell you what the consumer wants . Why ? My IG speaks for itself. I'm linked up with an ear to the knife community. Interview us Americans. We will do it for close to free. Do a campaign where you hold a mic to the community. Forget watching the ceo work out!!! I'm here to help.

      That will make the tests less scientifically accurate, because they are torqued to represent the grip of a human hand holding them. If you ever slipped and banged your knife against a brick wall or steel girder when cuttingm your arm isn't a bolted fixed mechanism. Your arm has slack and gives way, so letting the blade move is more realistic for actual real world accidents and use.

      @@williamspetter2823 Well there's nothing stopping you from buying a cheap cold steel knife and fully clamping it down and uploading the results to RUclips. If you really want to know how much locked in impact force they can handle on a spine whack test. I think even in that test the triad lock will probably come out on top, there's probably another reason they dont fully clamp the knives down as well, flying blade tips. So if you do the test make sure to wear some kind of protection, because you will be increasing the likelyhood of blades flying around at high speeds, which could potentially kill somebody.

    Biased condition sir. As there are no reps from spyderco to create their own conditions. In science, you have weights and pendulums that you own. Where are the ones owned by spyderco? This will help those who lack education in physics and marketing magic. I'd like an answer back to when spyderco is taking the ultimate hunter on a sharpness , edge retention and quality control test. Is there a date? I'd like to see a graph on customer service calls to satisfaction ratio. I want to see data on turn around times from your grievance committee. I don't need haters insulting me. Just make me believe by data that includes both parties.

    I had my finger taped to a stick for a month because of the medford liner lock ( stick out cartoon far and you can not miss it while in use ) medfords are cartoon big way way to heavy and dangerous worthless collect safe queen novelty knives!

    Today we have the Ball Bearing Lock Spyderco Manix II vs. the "Reigning, Pound for Pound, Champion of the World," CS's, Andrew Demko, Tri-Ad Lock, Ultimate Hunter.
    Spyderco Manix II, Ball Bearing Lock, did well and passed the "Spine Wack & Over Strike Test." :) But, the Manix II failed on the "Weight Hang Test," at 135 pounds. :(
    CS Ultimate Hunter, Tri-Ad Lock, passed all "Test!" And, is still the reigning, pound for pound, "Champion of the World!!!"
